Hardness and damping characteristics of fine discontinuous precipitates (DPs) microstructure generated by low temperature long term isothermal aging were investigated in comparison with those of T6 heat-treated microstructure composed of DPs and continuous precipitates (CPs) in Mg-9%Al alloy. In this study, T6 and fine DPs microstructures were obtained by isothermal aging at 453 K for 24 h and at 413 K for 336 h, respectively, after solution treatment at 693 K for 24 h. The DPs microstructure exhibited higher hardness than the T6 microstructure, which is related to the lower (α + β) interlamellar spacing of the DPs. The DPs microstructure possessed better damping capacity than the T6 microstructure in the strain-amplitude independent region, whereas in the strain-amplitude dependent region, the reverse behavior was observed. The damping tendencies depending on strain-amplitude were discussed based on the microstructural features of the T6 and DPs microstructures.
Titanium alloys are the one of promising candidate materials for medium high temperature parts in the aircraft, automobile, petrochemistry and electrochemistry because of their high strength with low density in medium high temperature. In this study, the effects of aging and heat treatments on the mechanical properties of Ti-15-3 alloy in medium high temperature, which was $400^{\circ}C$, were studied. Solid solution treatment was performed at $8000^{\circ}C$ of $\beta$ phase region for 1 h and the alloy was quenched in water. The alloy was aged at $5000^{\circ}C$ of $\alpha$ and $\beta$ two-phase region for 1, 2, 4, 8, ... and 100 h to increase the mechanical property. The $\beta$ single phase was observed at all parts of specimens in Ti-15-3 alloy after ST. As the aging at $500^{\circ}C$, fine precipitates of a phase was generated from matrix of $\beta$ phase and the microstructure was consisted of weaving structure such as Widmanstiitten a phase. The most suitable aging time is 24h in$ 400^{\circ}C$. At this time, strength is 1164 MPa and elongation is about 12%. In room temperature, elongation of Ti-15-3 alloy aged at $500^{\circ}C$ for 16 h is poor (=3%) in spite of high tensile strength (1458 MPa).
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of heat treatments on the martensite transformation and tensile deformation behavior in Ti-Ni-B alloys with various boron concentration. Three types of heat treatment are given to the specimens; i) solution treatment ii) aging iii) thermo-mechanical treatment. In solution treated specimens. R-phase transition which is related to abnormal increase of electrical resistance prior to martensitic transformation has been formed at a boron content of 0.2at % and the $M_s$ temperature has been decreased with the increasing of boron content. However. It has not been affected by aging, while that of thermo-mechanically treated specimens has been remarkably increased in the vicinity of recrystallization temperature. The thermo-mechanically treated specimen has showed a good thermal fatigue characteristics, shape memory effect and superelasticity in comparison with the solution treated specimen.
The aim of this study is to investigate aging behavior of A356 alloy for turbo charger part. The specimen was fabricated by investment casting. Solution heat treatment was performed at $525^{\circ}C$ for 8h and followed by aging treated at $160^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$ for 0.5~20h. And their microstructures and mechanical properties of the aged specimens were analyzed by scanning electron microscope and hardness tester, respectively. All the cast A356 alloy included eutectic Si particles. In the cast A356 alloy, eutectic Si phase mainly was formed along Chinese script phase. Vickers hardness of the cast was improved by aging treatment due to formation of ${\beta}$" phase and ${\beta}$' phase.
Aging is defined as a collective process that alters organism's functional capacity and appearance over the course of life. Apart from an increase in susceptibility to many diseases, aging affects the cellular system that is responsible for decoding painful stimuli. Yet, aging-associated molecular mechanisms of pain perception remains elusive. Using Drosophila, we showed a decrease in temperature tolerance and a reduction in high temperature thermal avoidance with aging. Locomotor activity assay demonstrated that the age-dependent changes in heat nociception did not stem from the general decline in muscular activity. However, we identified pain-related gene expression alteration with aging. We anticipate that our findings would help opening a new window onto developing the optimal pain treatment for the elderly.
Magnesium alloys are alloyed with rare earth elements (Re, Ca, Sr) due to the limited use of magnesium in high-temperature conditions. In this study, the influences of Zr and Zn on the aging behavior of a Mg-Nd-Y alloy were investigated. magnesium alloys containing R.E elements require aging treatments Specifically, Nd, Y and Zr are commonly used for high-temperature magnesium alloys. Various aging treatments were conducted at temperatures of 200, 250 and $300^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, 3, 6, and 10 hours in order to examine the microstructural changes and mechanical properties at a high temperature ($150^{\circ}C$). Hardness and high-temperature ($150^{\circ}C$) tensile tests were carried out under various aging conditions in order to investigate the effects of an aging treatment on the mechanical properties of a Mg-3.05Nd-2.06Y-1.13Zr-0.34Zn alloy. The maximum hardness was 67Hv; this was achieved after aging at $250^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The maximum tensile, yield strength and elongation at $150^{\circ}C$ were 237MPa, 145MPa and 13.6%, respectively, at $250^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The strengths of the Mg-3.05Nd-2.06Y-1.13Zr-0.34Zn alloy increased as the aging time increased to 3 hours at $250^{\circ}C$ This is attributed to the precipitation of a Nd-rich phase, a Zr-rich phase and $Mg_3Y_2Zn_3$.
In this study, the age-hardening behavior and tensile properties of a cast AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN9) alloy are investigated and compared with those of a commercial AZ91 alloy. Even after homogenization heat treatment, the SEN9 alloy contains numerous undissolved secondary phases, Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, which results in a higher hardness value than the homogenized AZ91 alloy. Under aging condition at 200 ℃, both the AZ91 and SEN9 alloys exhibit the same peak-aging time of 8 h, but the peak hardness of the latter (86.8 Hv) is higher than that of the former (83.9 Hv). The precipitation behavior of Mg17Al12 phase during aging significantly differs in the two alloys. In the AZ91 alloy, the area fraction of Mg17Al12 discontinuous precipitates (DPs) increases up to ~50% as the aging time increases. In contrast, in the SEN9 alloy, the formation and growth of DPs during aging are substantially suppressed by the Ca- or Y-containing particles, which leads to the formation of only a small amount of DPs with an area fraction of ~4% after peak aging. Moreover, the size and interparticle spacing of Mg17Al12 precipitates of the peak-aged SEN9 alloy are smaller than those of the peak-aged AZ91 alloy. The homogenized AZ91 alloy exhibits a higher tensile strength than the homogenized SEN9 alloy due to the finer grains of the former. However, the peak-aged SEN9 alloy has a higher tensile elongation than the peak-aged AZ91 alloy due to the smaller amount of brittle DPs in the former.
Transformation of austenite to martensite during cold rolling has been widely used to strengthen metastable austenitic stainless steel grades. Aging treatment of cold worked metastable austenitic stainless steels, including ${\alpha}'$-martensite phase, results in the further increase of strength, when aging is performed in $200^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$ temperature range. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of time and temperature on the stress-strain behavior of cold worked austenitic stainless steels. The amount of ${\alpha}'$-martensite during cold working and aging was examined by ferrite scope and X-ray diffraction (XRD). During aging at $450^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, tensile strength dramatically increased by 150MPa. Deformed metastable austenitic steels containing the "body-centered" ${\alpha}'$-martensite are strengthened by the diffusion of interstitial solute atoms during aging at low temperature.
Effect of isochronic aging on transformation behavior of Ti-50.85at%Ni alloy were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The martensitic transformation temperature increases with increasing annealing temperature until reaching a maximum, and then decreases with further increasing annealing temperature. This can be rationalized by interaction between the distribution of $Ti_3Ni_4$ precipitates and Ni content in the matrix. The R-phase transformation temperature increases with increasing annealing temperature until reaching a maximum, and then decreases with a further increase of annealing temperature. This is attributed to the change of Ni content in the matrix caused by precipitation of $Ti_3Ni_4$. The occurrence of the multiple-stage martensitic and R-phase transformation is attributed to precipitation-induced inhomogeneity of the matrix, both in terms of composition and of internal stress fields.
A transmission electron microscope (TEM) investigation has been performed on the precipitation of $L2_1$-type $Ni_2AlTi$ phase in B2-ordered NiAl system. The hardness after solution treatment is high in NiAl-Ti alloys suggesting the large contribution of solid solution strengthening in this alloy system. However, the amount of age hardening is not large as compared to the large microstructural variations during aging. At the beginning of aging, the $L2_1$-type $Ni_2AlTi$ precipitates keep a lattice coherency with the NiAl matrix. By longer periods of aging $Ni_2AlTi$ precipitates lose their coherency and change their morphology to the globular ones surrounded by misfit dislocations. Misfit dislocations, which are observed on {100} planes of H-precipitates have the Burgers vector of a <100> with a pure edge type. The lattice misfits of NiAl-$Ni_2AlTi$ system is estimated from the spacings of misfit dislocations to be 1.1% at 1273 K. The lattice misfits decrease with increasing aging temperature in this system.
