  • This study reviews advances in research made during the last decade in studies of aging families in Korea. Specifically, we provide a critical review of the theoretical directions and empirical findings of 87 research articles focused on aging families published in the Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society between 2008 and 2017. Topics and issues covered include: (a) diversity in family structures and households, (b) intergenerational relations, (c) intimate relations, and (d) family problems in later life. We found that while research applying theories and employing advanced methodologies has increased, embracing more diverse theories and ensuring nationally representative panel data from multi-reporters within families will enhance future research in aging and families. The authors conclude that more multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches are needed in the field of family studies and gerontology in Korea.

Data were collected from July to August 2017 using structured questionnaires. Data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that the perception of successful aging mean was 128.49 points (range: 33-165). Depression (r=-.20, p=.005) had a significant negative association with perception of successful aging. Family resilience (r=.49, p<.001) and life satisfaction (r=.54, p<.001) were positively correlated with perception of successful aging. The significant predictors of successful aging were age (${\ss}=-.15$, p=.013), family resilience (${\ss}=.24$, p=.002), and life satisfaction (${\ss}=.37$, p<.001), explaining 33.9% of the variance. Using SPSS Macro Way suggested by Preacher and Hayes. A study model is verified through a route model, and the verification of the study model is conducted in three stages. The first stage analyzes whether a control variable has a control effect in a relationship between predictor variable and standard variable, and the second stage confirms a relationship between predictor variable and mediated variable. In addition, the third stage confirms a mediated control effect. An analytical result is summarized as follows. First, as a result to verify a mediated effect between stress and successful aging, and optimism, it is confirmed that it supports a partially-mediated model. Second, as a result to verify a control effect of optimism and family support of successful aging, it is confirmed that everything has a control effect. Third, as a result to verify a mediated control effect of stress, optimism, successful aging, and family support, there is a mediated control effect. Based on these study results, practical undertone and future task are suggested, and a way to improve family support is presented for successful aging in advanced age.

  • This study explores the factors affecting emotional support between aging parents and adult children living in separate households. With a social exchange perspective on intergenerational family relationship as theoretical framework, the effects of aging parents\` demographic characteristics, potential reward resources. and need for care were tested by analyzing data collected from 2.535 persons aged 65 and over in 9,355 sample households of \`National Survey of Living Status and Welfare Needs of the Elders-1998\`. The statistical analysis of 2,205 aging parents with adult children living in seperate households reveals that the aging parents who have potential reward resources are provided more emotional support by their children than the aging parents without resources are. Findings also show that the elders who live in same households with their own children, and need help from other people with instrumental activities of daily living obtain less emotional support from their children living in separate households. The empirical findings of this study support the social exchange perspectives on family ties between aging parents and adult children living in separate households. but only 8.9 per cents of variance in degree of emotional support is explained by the variables included in the model.
