In China, serious environmental problems are induced by the extremely soft construction waste slurries in many urban areas, and there is no appropriate method to treat it presently. In this paper, four model tests were conducted to investigate the efficiency of waste slurry treatment by combining three conditioning agents which can change characteristics of the slurries with a traditional vacuum preloading method. The tests of size analysis of particle aggregate were conducted to investigate the influence of different conditioning agents on the size distributions of particle aggregate. During the model test, the discharged water volumes were monitored. The pore-size distribution and void ratio of the waste slurries after the vacuum preloading were measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). It is found that 1) During the natural precipitation, volume of water out of the organic agent is higher than that of the mixed agent, but it is smaller than that of the mixed agent in the vacuum preloading stage; 2) the mixed agent has a higher total volume of water out than the organic agent and the inorganic agent after test, while the organic agent and the inorganic agent have little difference with respect to the drainage effect. The results demonstrate that the combination of mixed conditioning agent and vacuum preloading for the solid-liquid separation in waste slurry has a satisfactory effect and can be applied in engineering practice.

The objective of this paper is to investigate experimentally the effect of the substitution of recycled aggregates under 13mm on the properties of the concrete using coarse aggregate with size of 13~25mm. Recycled aggregate under 13mm were substituted to the concrete ranged from 10% to 100%. To compare the properties with the case of recycled aggregate, crushed stone with smaller than 13mm was also substituted to the concrete by 20% and 40%. Test results showed that increase of recycled aggregate under 13mm resulted in the increase of slump and compressive strength compared with plain mixture, which was made with only aggregate with 13~25mm size. This is due to the dense gradation of aggregate in association with addition of relatively small particle. It is thought that the use of recycled aggregate under 13mm along with 30% contributes to the quality improvement of the concrete made with only 13~25mm aggregate.

Recently, attempts of replacing some of natural aggregate with mix of low quality aggregate are carried out for stable supply of aggregate. However, low quality aggregate such as recycled aggregate produced during the disposal process of construction wastes and by-product aggregate produced by industrial activities has problem of failing to comply to KS Standards. Therefore, we have compared fundamental properties of concrete by using granite crushed aggregate, recycled aggregate, blast furnace and electric arc furnace slag aggregate for effective utilization of lacking aggregate resources. As the result, slump in case of mixed use of aggregate was increased 0~10% compared to single use. Therefore, it is judged to be economically advantageous as it can expect effects in unit quantity or reduction of SP agent. Compressive strength in case of mixed use of aggregate was increased 0~10% compared to single use as it filled internal crevice of concrete with continuous particle size distribution. Accordingly, if we utilize by satisfying standard particle scope through mix of aggregate with different cause of formation in proper ratio, it was possible to confirm utility of mixed aggregate with demonstration of effects of increases of fluidity and compressive strength of concrete.

Plastic wastes generated from domestic waste are separated by mixed discharge with foreign substances, and the cost of the separation and screening process increases, so recycling is relatively low. In this study, as a fundamental study for recycling mixed plastic wastes generated from domestic waste into concrete aggregates, changes in concrete properties according to the plastic waste types and the substitution rate were evaluated experimentally. The mixed plastic waste aggregate(MPWA) was found to have a lower density and a higher absorption rate compared to the coarse aggregate with good particle size distribution. On the other hand, the single plastic waste aggregate(SPWA) was composed of particles of uniform size, and both the density and the absorption rate were lower than that of the fin e aggregate. It was found that the MPWA substitution concrete did not cause a material separation phenomenon due to a relatively good particle size distribution even with the largest amount of plastic waste substitution, and the amount of air flow increased little. The compressive strength and flexural strength of the PWA substitution concrete decreased as the amount of substitution of the PWA increased due to the low strength of the PWA, the suppression of the cement hydration reaction due to hydrophobicity, and the low adhesion between the PWA and the cement paste. It was found that the degree of deterioration in compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete substituted with MPWA having good particle size distribution was relatively small.
Fluorescence and dynamic light scattering measurements were applied to the study of formation and structure of aggregated colloidal particles in modified poly(ethylene-co-methylacrylate) ionomers in aqueous solution. Both 8-anillino-l-naphthalene-sulfonic acid (ANS) and pyrene were used as fluorescence probe to obtain the information on the structure of particle surface and inside, respectively. Three different ionomers used in this study started to aggregate at very dilute concentration, 3-8 x 10-6 g/mL. In this study, we demonstrate that the polyethylene ionomers can form stable nanoparticles. The hydrophobic core made of the polyethylene backbone chains is stabilized by the ionic groups on the particle surface. Such a formed stable nanoparticles have a relatively narrow size distribution with an average radius in the range of 27-48 nm, depending on the kind of ionic groups. Once the stable particles are formed, the particle size distributions were nearly constant. This study shows another way to prepare surfactant-free polyethylene nanoparticles.
As the demand for the recycling of industrial by-products increases due to various environmental restrictions including the prohibition of ocean disposal, various studies regarding the recycling of industrial by-products are currently being carried out. One of the industrial by-product, coal ash is produced from thermal power generation; studies on the recycling of fly ash have been actively carried out and it is currently recycled in various fields. In the case of bottom ash, however, only a portion of the total amount generated is primarily processed into a particle size of 2~4mm or less than 2mm to be used for gardening purpose and light weight aggregate and so on. The remaining amount is buried at ash disposal sites. Therefore, various studies are needed to develop measures to use bottom ash. This study aimed at identifying the optimal particle size and mixing ratio of bottom ash to be used as CLSM aggregate. To this end, it evaluated the usability of bottom ash as CLSM aggregate, by investigating the flowability and strength change characteristics of CLSM produced with regard to the mixing ratio of weathered granite soil and bottom ash, particle size of bottom ash to be mixed and soil binder addition rate and conducting a heavy metal leaching test.

Plastic wastes generated from household waste are separated by mixed discharge with foreign substances, and recycling is relatively low. In this study, the effect of the ratio and content of mixed plastic waste coarse aggregate(MPWCA)s and mixed plastic waste fine aggregate(MPWFA)s filled with blast furnace slag fine powder on the slump and compressive strength of concrete was evaluated experimentally. The MPWCAs were found to have a similar fineness modulus, but have a single particle size distribution with a smaller particle size compared to coarse aggregates. However, the MPWFAs were found to have a single particle size distribution with a larger fineness modulus and particle size compared to fine aggregates. Meanwhile, the effect of improving the density and filling pores by the blast furnace slag fine power was found to be greater in the MPWFA compared to the MPWCA. As the amount of the mixed plastic waste aggregate(MPWA)s increased, the slump and compressive strength of concrete decreased. In particular, the lower the slump and compressive strength of concrete was found to decrease the greater the amount of MPWFA than MPWCA when the amount of MPWA was the same. This is because of the entrapped air and voids formed under the angular- and ROD-shaped aggregates among the MPWFAs. On the other hand, the addition of the admixture and the increase in the unit amount of cement were found to be effective in improving the compressive strength of the concrete with MPWAs.

The generation of energy and the cooling of system using thermoelectric semiconductor material have been in spotlight. Thermoelectric effect increases with the decrease of the thermal conductivity. In the thermoelectric devices, thermal conductivity is related to phonon scattering. Therefore, few studies have been conducted in the thermoelectric materials dispersed nano oxide particle for increasing the phonon scattering. However, core-shell structure which nano particle disperses in solvents and then which thermoelectric materials coated on the nano oxide particles has not been reported. In this study, we selected commercial nano powder such as $Al_2O_3$. This nano particle was about 20nm and was crushed aggregate by mechanical treatment. We have developed the effect of the dispersant and the solvent. The properties of particles were evaluated by SEM, TEM, particle size analysis, and BET. Dispersion and dispersion stability were evaluated by electronic microscope and turbidity.

The purpose of this study is to research the basic property of mortar as the grading distribution of copper slag used as fine aggregate and the results are as follows. The compressive strength of mortar as the size of largest diameter of copper slag granule is the highest when the largest size is in 2.5-5mm, and flow of mortar is in proportion to the size. As the largest size of copper slag particle is under 2.5mm(Type 1) the compressive strength and flow is higher as the big granules is more included than small ones. As the largest size of copper slag granule is under 5mm(Type 2) the compressive strength and flow is similar to situation of Type 1, except compressive strength is higher as the percent of the size of granule in $2.5\~5mm$ is under 35$\%$. F.M.(Fine Modulus), compressive strength and flow is relative each other except the batch with 2.5$\∼$5mm granule size of copper slag.
A single particle crushing test was carried out for recycled aggregates from waste concrete while demolishing various structures. When the recycled aggregates were used for backfill or road subbase materials, load-displacement and crushing characteristics were analyzed. The recycled aggregates with hydrates and aggregates were sorted into 40 mm size (75-40 mm) and 20 mm size (40-20 mm). At initial loading, their irregular surface was closed to and then crushed by loading plate. Such first crushing stage was called 'Surface crushing'. Further loading, some hydrate was crushed and detached from aggregate, and such process repeated several times. This state is called 'hydrate crushing'. The final state is called 'aggregate crushing' in which aggregate crushed and following load suddenly dropped down. As the load increased, such crushing cycle is repeated several times. The shapes of aggregates are round or square, and triangle or long shaped. Depending on their shapes and surface conditions, they crushed in different ways. The 63% of aggregates showed more than 50% load reduction due to aggregate crushing. The 90% load reduction occurred at 15% of aggregates. The 40 mm aggregate crushed at maximum load between 3.05-4.38 kN and 70% of crushed aggregates were less than 20 mm.
