  • With the overall revision of the Welfare of the Aged Act in 1997, elderly welfare facilities have developed differently according to the size of locality, capacity, and social and economic characteristics. In response to the problem, various plans are being executed for expanding services and facilities for the aged. However, such efforts by the government have been focused on quantitative increase rather than on qualitative improvement, and there are not many high-quality elderly welfare facilities that meet the needs of the consumers, namely, the aged. In contrast, elderly welfare centers in Japan began to be founded from the 1960s and increased significantly from the 1970s and, as a result, 2,214 elderly welfare centers were in operation in 1995, maintaining a high level in quantity as well as in quality. Therefore, the present study surveyed using a checklist how elderly welfare centers in Japan, which are playing central roles in welfare facility services for the aged in Japan, design their indoor spaces reflecting elders' behavior and characteristics and, based on the results of the survey, classified spaces into shared spaces and individual service spaces and analyzed the spaces of each center using the checklist. The results from this case study will be used as basic data to establish standards for the space composition of elderly welfare facilities in Korea, which has 10 years' short history of elderly welfare facilities.

  • We evaluated the nutritional and socioeconomical factors of 100 children aged $5{\sim}6$ years. Forty five children (45%) were selected from families with low socioeconomic status, while 55 children (55%) were from those with high socioeconomic status. Some differences of the nutritional factors (eating behavior, food preference, food frequency) were found between low and high socioeconomic groups. This survey suggest that eating behavior, food preference and food frequency may be useful in estimating nutritional factors. And the nutrition education for the children and their meal planners is necessary to improve the nutritional status of the subjects.

  • This purpose of this study is to analyze the pursuit of current fashion trends and fashion image types of middle-aged women in Korea. This study attempted to investigate the standards and properties of these different types of fashion images. The overall characteristics of middle-aged women and the concepts of personal image and fashion image were investigated through literature research. Survey and analysis based on Q methodology was conducted. Factors of personal image, fashion image and components of fashion image were analyzed by collecting information from in-depth workshops and focus group interview of an expert group. The results of this study are as follows: 1) The main factors influencing the current fashion image of women in their forties and fifties in Korea are classified into six types. 2) The elements of fashion image that Korean women in their 40s and 50s pursue are divide into four types. 3) Each type can be recognized by specific fashion image components and colors. 4) This shows that middle-aged Korean women are highly conscious of how others perceive them and have a desire to not stand out from others. It also shows that they are very active in pursuing fashion and following trends, which is the image of an active and dignified woman. This study provides the framework that enables sorting of the fashion images types that middle-aged Korean women want to pursue. The results from analyzing the factors can be used to recognize specific fashion images, and can be used in the planning and designing of fashion items for middle-aged Korean women.

  • This study with qualitative research method explores the process of a middle-aged woman who finds and constructs her career path. As a result, career constitution process of a research participant choosing a career to make a living and carrying out what she is supposed to do, turned out to be more than just a job adaptation process in the workforce. Career constitution process is a journey in search of "genuine self" and a existential process in which the existence of self is understood by sustained choices and "actions." The research participant on the life journey of finding career path sought to return to her intrinsic life and practiced self-realization toward possibility. The result of this study suggests that "work" being different from calling needs to be understood anew in the existential perspective. "work" is not only a passage which makes the meaning of life by existential "actoins" but also a existential method heading toward self-realization. Not only that, career path is a process which doesn't get obvious by one choice but is unfolded by shaking between potential energy and possibilities accumulated by here and now decisions and actions. Thus, the researcher of this study suggests that counselling for career path should go beyond the linear task which figures out a person's aptitude, the features of the workforce and connects both. And there is the need for a paradigm shift in totally understanding the client's life and in making the meaning of a work in the process of finding genuine "self".

  • As the adult population continues to increase, orthodontic treatment for adult patients is becoming more common. This case report describes comprehensive orthodontic treatment of a middle-aged patient with closure of the extraction space without prosthetic restoration. A 55-year-old woman with her maxillary left first premolar extracted because of a periodontal problem, wanted to close the space with orthodontic treatment. Since she had generalized crowding and mild skeletal discrepancy, we planned comprehensive orthodontic treatment, including closure of the extraction space by protraction of the left maxillary molars using miniscrews and aesthetic alignment of anterior teeth. The total treatment period was 28 months. As a result of these treatments, the extraction space was successfully closed, good tooth alignment and satisfactory occlusion were achieved.
