We present the Yonsei Evolutionary Population Synthesis (YEPS) models for spectroscopic and photometric evolutions of simple and composite stellar populations. The models are based on the most up-to-date Yonsei-Yale stellar evolutionary tracks and BaSel 3.1 flux libraries, and provide integrated spectroscopic quantities of Lick/IDS system including high-order Balmer absorption-lines. Special care has been taken to incorporate the systematic variation of horizontal branch (HB) morphology as functions of metallicity, age, alpha-element mixture, and helium abundance of simple stellar populations. Our models for normal-helium stellar populations indicate that the realistic modeling of HB and alpha-element brings about 5 Gyr and 0.1 dex differences in age and metallicity estimations, respectively, compared to those without these effects. The HB effect does not depend on the specific choice of stellar libraries and alpha-element enhancements, and this effect is non-negligible even in the metal sensitive absorption indices, such as Mg2 and Mg b. Comparison of the models to observations reveals that the HB and alpha-element effects are critical in understanding otherwise inexplicable phenomena found in globular cluster systems in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, including the observed bimodality of the line strengths of globular clusters in massive galaxies. In addition, we found that helium-enhanced stellar populations, which are the major sources of extreme HB stars, bring about increased FUV, NUV fluxes, and thus the model colors of those filters become extremely blue. Age dating based on the YEPS model with normal-helium stellar populations reveals that the evidence for 'downsizing' of elliptical galaxies is found not only in the local field but also in Coma cluster, and that the mean age of elliptical galaxies in Coma cluster is about 1.4 Gyr younger than the mean age of those in the local field. We also find that our models with helium-enhanced subpopulations can naturally reproduce the strong UV-upturns observed in giant elliptical galaxies assuming an age similar to that of old GCs in the Milky Way.
Concrete mechanical properties change constantly with age, temperature, humidity and the other environmental factors. This research studies the effects of temperature and age on the development of concrete elastic modulus by a series of prism specimens. Elastic modulus test was conducted at various temperatures and ages in the laboratory to examine the effects of temperature and age on it. The experimental results reveal that the concrete elastic modulus decreases with the rise of temperature but increases with age. Then, a temperature coefficient K is proposed to describe the effects of temperature and validated by existing studies. Finally, on the basis of K, analytical models are proposed to determine the elastic modulus of concrete at a given temperature and age. The proposed models can offer designers an approach to obtain more accurate properties of concrete structures through the elastic modulus modification based on actual age and temperature, rather than using a value merely based on laboratory testing.
Creep is a major parameter to represent long-term behavior of concrete structures concerning serviceability and durability. The effect of creep is recently taking account into crack resistance analysis of early-age concrete concerning durability evaluation. Since existing creep prediction models were proposed to predict creep for hardened concrete, most of them cannot consider effectively the information on microstructure formation and hydration developed in the early-age concrete. In this study, creep tests for early-age concrete made of the type I cement and the type V cement are carried out respectively and creep prediction models are evaluated for the prediction of creep behavior in early-age concrete. A creep prediction model is modified for the prediction of creep in early-age concrete and also verified by comparing prediction results with results of creep tests on early-age concrete.
Recently, as a performance based design concept is introduced, assurance of expected performances on serviceability and safety in the whole span of life is exactly requested. So, quantitative assessments about durability related properties of concrete in early-age long term are come to necessary, Especially in early age, deterioration which affects long-term durability performance can be occurred by hydration heat and shrinkage, so development of reasonable hydration heat model which can simulate early age behavior is necessary. The micor-pore structure formation property also affects shrinkage behavior in early age and carbonations and chloride ion penetration characteristic in long term, So, for the quantitative assessment on durability performance of concrete, modelings of early age concrete based on hydration process and micor-pore structure formation characteristics are important. In this paper, a micromechanics based hydration heat evolution model is adopted and a quantitative model which can simulate micro-pore structure development is also verified with experimental results. The models can be used effectively to simulate the early-age behavior of concrete composed of different mix proportions.
Products which are sold with warranty, preventive maintenance actions by manufacturers and/or buyers have an impact on the total costs for both parties. In this paper, we develop the models to study the expected warranty cost for products with free repairable warranty with three types of discrete preventive maintenance. We deal with by utilizing the concept that preventive maintenance reduces the virtual age of the system. We assume that the maintenance planning horizon can be segmented into k discrete and equally sized periods. In such a scenario, numerical examples are presented.
This study analyzes the images of models in womenswear advertisements targeting women in their fifties. The goals of this study are: 1) to investigate beauty ideals for middle-aged women by analyzing models' look age, chronological age, wrinkles, gray hair, hair length, body type, and race; and 2) to explore how ageing is dealt with in advertisements by analyzing the range of bodies shown in advertisements, the color mode of photographs, and the clarity of models' figures in relation to models' look ages. A total of 155 printed advertisements from January 2012 to January 2017 from the brands Daks Ladies, Lebeige, Luciano Choi, PAT, and Zishen were selected for analysis. Womenswear brands targeting middle-aged women reinforce cultural ideals of female beauty that emphasize youth and slenderness. They do this by using thin and slender models, who most often appear to be in their twenties and thirties, and have hair longer than their shoulders. Brands with higher price ranges show a preference for Caucasian models, which reveals that a Caucasian identity is associated with sophistication. In addition, the bodies of models who appear to be in their forties and fifties were concealed by framing photographs mostly above the knees. Older models' features were also obscured via the use of black and white photography, strong lighting and contrast, and digital editing that blurred the boundaries between figures and their backgrounds. These decisions for how to represent models could result in negative self-esteem and a denial of the symptoms of ageing among middle-aged women.
For the well observed 16 globular clusters with known metal abundance (Z), the helium abundances (Y) and ages are determined by various methods, and the relations between Y, Z and age are examined. The luminosity $L_{RR}$ of RR Lyrae stars is known to be dependent of evolutionary models and pulsation theory in the sense that the pulsation theory and horizontal branch (HB) models yield the anticorrelation between $L_{RR}$ and Z whereas main sequence (MS) and red giant branch (RGB) models yield the direct correlation between them. Similarly the anticorrelation between Y and Z is obtained from the HB models and pulsation theory whereas the direct correlation between them is obtained when the RGB model is applied. The current evolutionary models yield the anticorrelation between Z and age of clusters whenever the direct correlation between Y and Z holds. However when the anticorrelation between Y and Z is applied for age determination, the similar age of clusters is obtained as shown by Sandage (1982b). The ages, which are determined by the fitting of C-M diagrams to isochrones in the ($M_v$, B-V)-plane, suggest the two different chemical enrichment processes, which could be accounted for by the disk-halo model for the chemical evolution of the Galaxy (Lee and Ann 1981). Also it is known that the R-method is very useful for Y-determination and the derived Y's show the increasing rate of $\frac{{\Delta}Y}{{\Delta}Z}{\simeq}0.5$ which is comparable to the observed value of $\frac{{\Delta}Y}{{\Delta}Z}{\simeq}0.3$ from HII regions and planetary nebulae by Peimbert and Torres-Peimbert (1976). In this case, the age-metallicity relation of globular clusters could be explained by the disk-halo model.
This paper presents the detailed experimental and analytical investigation on the evolution of static (Es) and dynamic modulus of elasticity (Ed) of concrete having 0%, 35%, and 50% FA used as partial cement replacement. Destructive and non-destructive tests were conducted on cylindrical specimens to evaluate the compressive strength and MoE of concrete in compression at the age of 28, 56, 90, and 150 days for all mixes. Experimental results show that the concrete having 35% FA achieved compressive strength and MoE similar to plain concrete at the age of 90 days, while 50% FA concrete attained satisfactory compressive strength and MoE at the age of 150 days. The comprehensive statistical analysis has been carried out in two ways on the basis of the experimental results. Firstly, the 28-day crushing strength of plain concrete in compression was used to design the models for the prediction of Es and Ed of fly ash concrete at any age and percentage replacement of FA. Secondly, using the values of UPV and RHN, models have been developed to predict the age or time-dependent Es and Ed of fly ash concrete. These models will be helpful in assessing the Es and Ed of fly ash concrete without knowing the 28-day crushing strength of plain concrete in compression in the laboratory. Hence, the suggested models in the present study will be beneficial in conducting the health assessment of fly ash based concrete structures.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the features of Korean infants' vocalizations according to the stages models. A total 88 infants, whose ages range from 1 to 18 months, participated in this study. This age is a critical period for vocal development. However, the study of infants' vocalizations has typically focused on children over the age of two. Because of restrictions related to the study of younger infants, from birth to the age of two, it is usually difficult to investigate what are the major features of their vocal development. Therefore, this study provides documentation and analysis of the features of infant vocalization and their vocal development stages. The results shows that the stages model of Oller & Lynch (1992) might be adapted for Korean infants' vocal development. Furthermore, the features of the infants' vocalization are not linearly appeared one stage to the next stage, but are overlapped (Koopmans-van Beinum & van der Stelt, 1986; Nathani et al., 2006; Oller, 1980; Stark, 1980; Vihman, 1996).

Time dependent strain due to creep is a significant factor in structural design. Multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP) and artificial neural network (ANN) are used to develop two models for prediction of creep compliance in concrete. The first model was developed by MGGP technique and the second model by hybridized MGGP-ANN. In the MGGP-ANN, the ANN is working in parallel with MGGP to predict errors in MGGP model. A total of 187 experimental data sets that contain 4242 data points are filtered from the NU-ITI database. These data are used in developing the MGGP and MGGP-ANN models. These models contain six input variables which are: average compressive strength at 28 days, relative humidity, volume to surface ratio, cement type, age at start of loading and age at the creep measurement. Practical equation based on MGGP was developed. A parametric study carried out with a group of hypothetical data generated among the range of data used to check the generalization ability of MGGP and MGGP-ANN models. To confirm validity of MGGP and MGGP-ANN models; two creep prediction code models (ACI209 and CEB), two empirical models (B3 and GL 2000) are used to compare their results with NU-ITI database.
