Purpose: In patients with major trauma, mortality varies by age. This study aimed to identify predictors of death according to age. Methods: Data from the Community-Based Severe Trauma Survey in Korea were analyzed using a retrospective case-control design. Factors associated with death were identified by age using independent-samples t-tests, Welch's test, and χ2 tests. Results: There were statistically significant differences in mortality by sex (p=.006), location (p=.029), mechanism of injury (MOI) (p<.001), intention (p<.001), transportation (p<.001), surgery (p<.001), and Injury Severity Score (ISS) (p<.001) in the ≤44 years age group; by location (p<.001), MOI (p=.004), intention (p<.001), transportation (p<.001), surgery (p<.001), and ISS (p<.001) in the 45-54 years age group; by location (p=.040), MOI (p<.001), transportation (p<.001), transfusion (p<.001), surgery (p<.001), and ISS (p<.001) in the 55-64 years age group; by location (p=.015), intention (p<.001), surgery (p<.001), and ISS (p<.001) in the 65-74 years age group; and by location (p=.002), intention (p<.001), transfusion (p=.020), surgery (p<.001), and ISS (p<.001) in the ≥75 years age group. Conclusion: In patients with major trauma, predictors of mortality varied by age.
We examined the relationship between breakfast eating, nutrient intake, and health outcomes using dietary intake, anthropometric, and biochemical measurements in Korean adults. Data from the 2007 National Health and Nutrition Survey were obtained, and 2,514 adults aged 20 to 64 years were analyzed. The prevalence of skipping breakfast, using a 24-hour diet recall, was 54.5% in the 20-29 age group, 31.2% in the 30-49 age group, and 19.2% in the 50-64 age group. In the 20-29 age group, waist circumstance and serum cholesterol were significantly higher in breakfast skippers than in breakfast eaters. In the 30-49 age group, breakfast skippers had higher triglyceride levels than breakfast eaters. Energy intake of breakfast skippers in every age group was significantly lower than that of breakfast eaters. Furthermore, in the 20-29 and 30-49 age groups, the percent of energy from carbohydrates in breakfast skippers was significantly lower than that of breakfast eaters, whereas the percent of energy from lipids in breakfast skippers was significantly higher than that of breakfast eaters. Additionally, in the 20-29 and 30-49 age groups, breakfast eaters showed higher carbohydrate and iron intake per 1,000 kcal than breakfast skippers and lower lipid intake per 1,000 kcal than that of breakfast skippers. Breakfast skippers showed intakes of less nutrients than EAR was higher than breakfast eaters except vitamin B2 and calcium intake in males of the 20-29 age group. In conclusion, nutrition education, and policy should be implemented to teach the importance of breakfast, appropriate dietary intake, and proper food choice for each age group.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship of blood pressure with dietary habit and level of physical fitness of middle-aged male workers by age. The study subjects included 511 male employees who have worked at a company in C City, whose age was more than 40 years old. Between April 10 and May 30. 1998, all of the study subjects measured physical fitness (Balance, strength, power, agility, flexibility and endurance) and blood pressure. A questionnair was administered for dietary habit and socio-demographic characteristics. The average age (SD) of the study subjects was 46.61(3.98) years. The study subjects were classified by age into 3 groups; 40-44 aged group(34.6%), 45-49 aged group(41.3%), and 50-54 aged group (24.1%). The score of dietary habit of 40-44 aged group was $69.77{\pm}5.82$. that of 45-49 aged group was $69.77{\pm}5.83$, and that of 50-54 aged group was $71.85{\pm}6.82$(p=0.005). But age of health physical fitness tend to weaken in the age of 40-44. Systolic(p=.011) and Diastolic blood pressure (p= .011) were significantly increased with age increment. Diastolic blood pressure and dietary habit of 45-49 aged group showed the significant negative-correlation(r= .280. P<0.05). and Diastolic blood pressure and age of health physical fitness of 40-44 aged group showed the significant positive-correlation(r= .182. P<0.05). On the basis of the results of this study. I hope occupational nurses should play an active role to improve dietary habit and physical fitness for prevention of hypertension with increase of age in middle-aged male workers.
Purpose: Gastric cancer has a high incidence and mortality rate in Korea. Despite a growing older population and an increase in the number of older patients with gastric cancer, the older patients are not willing to undergo surgery due to their operative risks. Hence, to determine the clinical characteristics and outcomes of gastric cancer surgery for them, we investigate factors influencing the treatment decision. Materials and Methods: Between January 1996 and December 2005, a total of 1,519 patients were classified into two groups; the younger age group between 41 and 69 years of age, and the older age group of 70 years or older. The analysis conducted included patient characteristics, accompanying disorders, related American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade, pathological characteristics and survival rate for each age group. Results: Significant differences were found in the ASA grade (P<0.001) and the number of accompanying disorders (P<0.001) between the two groups. The average length of hospital stay after surgery was 14.5 days in the younger age group, and 13.3 days in the older age group (P=0.065). The average survival time was 47.5 months in the younger age group, and 43.2 months in the older age group (P<0.001). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that there was more number of accompanying disorders with a high surgical risk in the older age group. However, there was no significant difference between the older and younger age groups in terms of the incidence of complications, under the given disease conditions and if proper management was provided.
In order to evaluate the community dental health level the actual health capacity of the lower-first permanent molar is suitable as a indicator for assessment. The DMFT indices of the lower first permancent molars showed in 1.40 in the age group of from 20 to 24 and 1.44 from 25 to 29. 2. The actual dental health capscities of the lower first permanent molars showed in 84.86% in the age group of from 20 to 24 and 81.03% from 25 to 29. 3. The DMF indices of the lower first permanent molars showed 15.15% in the age group of from 20 to 24 and 18.98% of from 25 to 29. 4. The DMF rates of the lower first permanent molars showed 85.66% in the age group of from 20 to 24 and 88.70% of from 25 to 29. 5. The DMF rates of the lower first permanent molars showed 70.00% in the age group of from 20 to 24 and 71.96% of from 25 to 29. 6. The DT rates of the lower first permanent molars showed 48.84% in the age group of from 20 to 24 and 39.55% of from 25 to 29. 7. The FT rates the lower first permanent molars showed 40.22% in the age group of from 20 to 24 and 43.98% of from 25 to 29. 8. The MT rates of the lower first permanent molars showed 10.94% in the age group of from 20 to 24 and 16.17% of from 25 to 29.

Nutrition factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between nutritional status and bone mineral density of elderly women. Three hundred thirty five elderly women (over 65 years) in Asan were divided into three age groups (group 1, less than 70 y ; group 2, from 70 to 75 y ; group 3, 75 y or more). Total alkaline phosphatase and serum calcium (Ca) were analyzed using spectrophotometric procedure. Data for food and nutrient intakes were obtained by a 24-hour recall method. Bone density was measured by broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) using QUS-2. Age differences were tested with the X 2 test for categorical variables and with ANOVA and Tukey's test for continuous variables. Correlation was conducted to test the association between bone density and nutrient intake. The subjects in age groups 1,2 and 3 were $36.7\%$, $32.8\%$ and $30.4\%$, respectively. Height and body weight of the subjects were significantly decreased with age. Average bone density of the subjects in group 3 was lower than the other age groups. Osteoporosis determined by t-score is $17.9\%$ for group 1, $24.5\%$ for group 2 and $55.9\%$ for group 3 (p < 0.001). The serum Ca level of the subjects in group 2 was significantly lower than that of group 1 although mean values in all age groups are within the normal range. Dietary Ca intake, nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and index of nutrient quality (INQ) were decreased with age. Bone density was negatively correlated with age (p < 0.001), while body mass index (p < 0.01) was positively related with bone density. Although partial correlation did not reveal the significant correlation of BMD and dietary calcium after controlling for age, since calcium intake was very poor compared to sodium and phosphorous intakes, recommendation of more calcium intake for elderly women especially those over 75 years must be continuously emphasized.
The need for periodic investigation on human growth rate and somatotypes has been increased because the scientific development and environmental factors have effected a lot on them recently. This study aimed to investigate the changes of the 638 female somatotypes in the age of 18-54 obtained by direct and indirect measurement. The measurement data were divided into 4 groups early young women age group (18-54), late young women age group (25-34), early middle age group (35-44), late middle age group (45-54) and compared each other based on each group by age. The results obtained from this study were as follows: 1. According to Mollison Curve based on the early young women, items of depth decreased overall and pp.P. length & shoulder length increased as the age increased. The circumference, breadth and thickness tended to increase, especially waist girth and thickness of waist increased markedly. The data showed that the increase rate of thickness was higher than that of breadth. 2. Gradual somatotype changes were observed by overlapping projection drawings obtained by direct measurement. Compared with the young women, the middle aged showed lower should point depth and hip line & crotch depth line were lengthened significantly. No significant difference was observed in overlapping of the early young women and the late young women' figure, neither was in early middle aged and the late middle aged. 3. By overlapping the side view of the young women group (18-37) and middle aged group (35-54), no significant postural characteristics were found, while the back tended to bend forward and the abdomen and hip appeared to get fat.
Purposes : As the population of old people has increased by the improvement of medical techniques, the concern on degenerative diseases has increased gradually. Especially the researches of osteoporosis have been carried out in view of prevention and treatment. But there wasn't any research related with Sasang Constitution. So we investigated the relation between Sasang Constitution and BMD(bone mineral density). Methods : Authors measured BMD and BMI(body mass index) of healthy women. We devided our subjects into Young age group and Old age group, and analyzed the data of Sasang Constitution subgroup. Results : 1. BMD of Taeumin was higher than those of Soyangin and Soeumin in Lumbar spine and Femoral neck in both Young and Old age group. In Old age group, there were significant differences in Taeumin vs Soeumin, and Soyangin vs Soeumin in BMD of Lumbar spine 2. BMI of Taeumin was higher than those of Soyangin and Soeumin in both Young and Old age group. In Young age group, there were significant differences in Taeumin vs Soyangin and Taeumin vs Soeumin. In Old age group, there were significant differences in Taeumin vs Soyangin, Taeumin vs Soeumin and Soyangin vs Soeumin. Conclusion : BMD and BMI of Taeumin was higher than those of Soyangin and Soeumin.
