  • Sintered Si3N4 and Inconel composed of Ni(58-63%) Cr(21-25%) Al(1-17%) Mn(<1%) fe(balance) were pressurelessly joined by using Ag-Cu-Ti brazing filler metal at 950℃ and 1200℃ under N2 gas atmosphere of 1atm and their interfacial structures were investigated. In case that the reaction temperature was low as 950℃ its interfacial structure was "Inconel metal/Ti-rich phase layer/brazing filler metal layer/Si3N4 " Ti used as reactive metal existed in between inconel steel and brazing metal and moved to the interface of between brazing filler metal nd Si3N4 according as reaction temperature increased up to 1200℃. The interfacial structure of inconel steel-Si3N4 reacted at 1200℃ was ' inconel metal/Ni-rich phase layer containing of Fe. Cr and Si/Cu-rich phase layer containing of Mn and Si/Si3N4 " Cr Mn, Ni and Fe diffused to the interface of between brazing filler metal and Si3N4 and reacted with Si3N4 The most reactive components of ingredients of inconel metal were Cr and Mn. On the other hand Ti added as reactive components to Ag-Cu eutectic segregated into Ni-rich phase layer,.

  • In Ti active brazing of YSZ to STS 430 using Ag-Cu Filler Metal, the effect of Ti contents on the shear bonding strength were investigated together with the effect of brazing temperature and holding time. The addition of Ti in Ag-Cu Filler Metal increased the bonding strength up to 4.68% Ti, followed by the decrease with further addition. This seems to be caused by formation of TixOy at the reaction layer. Brazing temperature was optimized at $960^{\circ}C$ among a given temperature ranges. The addion of Sn to Ag-Cu filler metal brought the decrease of its melting temperature its melting temperature without a significant decrease of bonging strength.

  • The brazing adhesion properties of Ag coated W-Ag electric contact on the Cu substrate have been investigated in therms of microstructure, phase equilibrium and adhesion strength. Precoating of Ag layer ($3{\mu}m$ in thickness) on the $W-40\%Ag$ contact material was done by electro-plating method. Subsequently the brazing treatment was conducted by inserting BCuP-5 filler metal (Ag-Cu-P alloy) layer between Ag coated W-Ag and Cu substrate and annealing at $710^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ atmosphere. The optimum brazing temperature of $710^{\circ}C$ was semi-empirically calculated on the basis of the Cu atomic diffusion profile in Ag layer of commercial electric contact produced by the same brazing process. As a mechanical test of the electric contact after brazing treatment the adhesion strength between the electric contact and Cu substrate was measured using Instron. The microstructure and phase equilibrium study revealed that the sound interlayer structure was formed by relatively low brazing treatment at $710^{\circ}C$. Thin Ag electro-plated layer precoated on the electric contact ($3{\mu}m$ in thickness) is thought to be enough for high adhesion strength arid sound microstructure in interface layer.

  • We have investigated the microstructures and the mechanical properties of TiA1/Cerameti1721 (Ag-Cu-Ti insert metal)/AISI4140 joints at 800$^{\circ}C$ for 60 to 300s using induction brazing method. Two continuous reaction layers of AICuTi and AICu$_2$Ti were formed at the interface between the braze and TiAl, whose thickness increased with the brazing time. The braze consisted of Ag-rich, Ti-rich, CuTi and CuTi$_2$ phases. The maximum tensile strength achieved 296MPa, which was 71% of that of TiAl base metal, for the specimen bonded at 800$^{\circ}C$. Further increase of the brazing temperature and time resulted in constant deterioration of its bonding strength due to large amount of brittle IMC.

  • The active metal brazing was applied to bond Alumina and Ni-Cr steel by Ag-Cu-Zr-Sn alloy and the interfacial microstructure and reaction mechanism were investigated. Polycrystalline monoclinic $ZrO_2$ with a very fine grain of 100-150 nm formed at the alumina grain boundary contacted with Zr segregation layer at the interface. The $ZrO_2$ layer containing the inclusions and cracks were developed at the boundary of inclusion/$ZrO_2$ due to the difference in specific volume. The development of $ZrO_2$ at the interface was successfully explained by the preferential penetration of $ZrO_2$ at the interface was successfully explained by the preferential penetration of Zr atoms a higher concentration of oxygen and a high diffusion rate of Al ions into molten brazing alloy.

  • Ceramics are significantly used in many industrial applications due to their excellent mechanical and thermal properties such as high temperature strength, low density, high hardness, low thermal expansion, and good corrosion resistive properties, while their disadvantages are brittleness, poor formability and high manufacturing cost. To combine advantages of ceramics with those of metals, they are often used together as one composite component, which necessiates reliable joining methods between metal and ceramic. Direct brazing using an active filler metal has been found to be a reliable and simple technique, producing strong and reliable joints. In this study, the fracture characteristics of Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic joined to ANSI 304L stainless steel with a Ti-Ag-Cu filler and a Cu (0.25-0.3 mm) interlayer are investigated as a function of strain rate and temperature. In order to evaluate a local strain a couple of strain gages are pasted at the ceramic and metal sides near joint interface. As a result the 4-point bending strength and the deflection of interlayer increased at room temperature with increasing strain rate. However bending strength decreased with temperature while deflection of interlayer was almost same. The fracture shapes were classified into three groups ; cracks grow into the metal-brazing filler line, the ceramic-brazing filler line or the ceramic inside.

  • Using a surface modification technique, ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) of Ti thin film it becomes possible to prepare an active ceramic surface to braze $Al_2O_3$-STS304 with conventional Ag-Cu eutectic composition filler metal. Researches on bonding formations at interfaces of ceramic joints were mainly related on the development of filler metals to ceramic, the process parameters, and clarifications of reaction products. From the results, the reactive brazing is a very convenient technique compared to the conventional Mn-Mo method. However melting point of reactive filler is still higher than that of Ag-Cu eutectic and it forms the brittle inter metallic compound. Recently several new approaches are introduced to overcome the main shortcomings of the reactive metal brazing in ceramic-metal, metal vapor vacuum arc ion source was introduced to implant the reactive element directly into the ceramics surface, and sputter deposition with sputter etching for the deposition of active material.

  • To know the bonding phenomena of Ti/Cu brazed joint, a characteristic of microstructures in bonding interlayer of vacuum brazed pure Ti to Cu has been studied in the temperature range from 1088 to 1133K for various bonding times using Ag-28wt%Cu filler metal. Also intermediate phases formed in bonded interlayer and behavior of layer growth have been investigated. The obtained results in this study are as follows: 1) Liquid insert metal width at the each brazing temperature was proportional to the square root of brazing time, and it was considered that the liquid insert metal width was controlled by the diffusion rate process of primary .alpha.-Cu formed at the Ti side. 2) Intermediate phases formed near the Ti interface were .betha.-Ti and intermetallic compounds TiCu, Ti$_{2}$Cu, Ti$_{3}$Cu, and TiCu. 3) .betha.-Ti formed in Ti base metal durig brazing transformed to lamellar structure, .alpha.-Ti + Ti$_{2}$Cu. The structure came from the eutectoil decomposition reaction in cooling. And the width of .betha.-Ti layer was proportional to the square root of brazing time, and it was considered that the growth of .betha.-Ti layer was controlled by interdiffusion rate process in .betha.-Ti. 4) The layer growth of TiCu, Ti$_{3}$Cu$_{4}$ and TiCu, phases formed near the Ti interface was linerface was linearly proportional to the brazing time, and it was considered that the layer growth of these phases was controlled by the chemical reaction rate at the interface.

  • In this experiment, to find optimum brazing conditions for Cu/Stainless Steel brazing using filler metals of Ag-Cu-Zn-Cd system, first of all spreading ratio was tested on 304 stainless Steel and low carbon steel. And then shear test of brazed joint was executed. As the result of that, the shear strengths of brazed joints were the range of 60-90 MPa. Through microstructure analysis for brazed interface layer, We found as follows. Firstly interface layer increased as time increased. Secondly continuous layer of Ag-Cd compound was observed along the side of stainless steel. Also by means of EDS analysis for fracture surface, ductile fracture was occurred and precipitates on the fracture surface were found to include Cr, Mn, Si in Ag-rich phase.
