  • Most of iodine was captured by the block when NaI solution flowed through a bentonite block sorbed silver to retard the migration of iodine released from high-level radioactive wastes. In order to understand in detail the mechanism for the retardation of the iodine by the silver ion, X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectra of the silver sorbed bentonite before and after the contact with iodide were compared with those of AgO, $Ag_2O$ and AgI as references. This examination suggests that the silver ion sorbed on the bentonite is desorbed, and then it retards the migration of iodine by forming the cluster of AgI precipitate.

  • We successfully decorated multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with silver by reacting Ag-NPs with thiolfunctionalized MWNT-SH. Ag alkylcarbamate complex was used as an Ag precursor. Uniform Ag-NPs (5-10 nm) were effectively prepared by microwaving within 60 s using 1-amino-4-methylpiperazine (AMP), which acts as a reaction medium, reducing agent, and stabilizer. The MWNTs were functionalized with 2-aminoethanethiol. Exploiting the chemical affinity between thiol and Ag-NPs, Ag-MWNT nanohybrids were obtained by spontaneous chemical adsorption of MWNT-SH to Ag through Ag-S bonds. The Ag-S-MWNTs were characterized by TGA, XRD, and TEM to confirm that Ag-NPs were uniformly decorated onto the MWNTs. The Ag-S-MWNTs were then employed as conducting filler in epoxy resin to fabricate electrically conducting polymer composites. The electrical properties of the composites were measured and compared with that containing MWNT-SH. The electrical conductivity of composites containing 0.4 wt % Ag-S-MWNT was four orders of magnitude higher than those containing same content of MWNT-SH, confirming Ag-S-MWNT as an effective conducting filler.

  • In the present work, we describe a simple, cheap, and unexplored method for "green" synthesis of silver nanoparticles using cell extracts of the cyanobacterium Anabaena doliolum. An attempt was also made to test the antimicrobial and antitumor activities of the synthesized nanoparticles. Analytical techniques, namely UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and TEM-selected area electron diffraction, were used to elucidate the formation and characterization of silver-cyanobacterial nanoparticles (Ag-CNPs). Results showed that the original color of the cell extract changed from reddish blue to dark brown after addition of silver nitrate solution (1 mM) within 1 h, suggesting the synthesis of Ag-CNPs. That the formation Ag-CNPs indeed occurred was also evident from the spectroscopic analysis of the reaction mixture, wherein a prominent peak at 420 nm was noted. TEM images revealed well-dispersed, spherical Ag-CNPs with a particle size in the range of 10-50 nm. The X-ray diffraction spectrum suggested a crystalline nature of the Ag-CNPs. FTIR analysis indicated the utilization of a hydroxyl (-OH) group in the formation of Ag-CNPs. Ag-CNPs exhibited strong antibacterial activity against three multidrug-resistant bacteria. Additionally, Ag-CNPs strongly affected the survival of Dalton's lymphoma and human carcinoma colo205 cells at a very low concentration. The Ag-CNPs-induced loss of survival of both cell types may be due to the induction of reactive oxygen species generation and DNA fragmentation, resulting in apoptosis. Properties exhibited by the Ag-CNP suggest that it may be used as a potential antibacterial and antitumor agent.

  • Submicron copper-silver core-shell (Cu@Ag) particles were synthesized using the sonochemical combined transmetallation reaction and the application to printed electronics as a low cost conductive paste was evaluated. $Cu_2O$ of the $Cu_2O/Cu$ composite used as a core in the reaction for the synthesis of core-shell was sonochemically reduced to Cu, and Cu atoms functioned as a reducer for silver ions in transmetallation to achieve the copper-silver core-shell structure. The characterization of submicron particles by TEM-EDS and TG-DSC confirmed the core-shell structure. Conductive pastes in which 70 wt% Cu@Ag was dispersed in solvents were prepared using a binder and wetting agents, and coated on the polyamide film using a screen-printing method. Printed paste films containing synthesized Cu@Ag particles with 8 at% and 16 at% Ag exhibited low resistivity of 96.2 and $38.4{\mu}{\Omega}cm$ after sintering at $180^{\circ}C$ in air, respectively.

  • Garcinol, a well-known medicinal phytochemical, was extracted and isolated from the dried fruit rinds of Garcinia quaesita Pierre. In this study, garcinol has successfully used to reduce silver ions to silver in order to synthesize garcinol-capped silver nanoparticles (G-AgNPs). The formation and the structure of G-AgNPs were confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The antimicrobial activity of garcinol and G-AgNPs were investigated by well diffusion assays, broth micro-dilution assays and time-kill kinetics studies against five microbial species, including Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) and clinically isolated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The formation of G-AgNPs is a promising novel approach to enhancing the biological activeness of silver nanoparticles, and to increase the water solubility of garcinol which creates a broad range of therapeutic applications.

  • The silver selenide electrode has been prepared and its properties as an indicating electrode for silver ion have been investigated. Epoxy resin was used as a filler of silver selenide electrode. Silver metal plate was directly connected with the membrane of the electrode and the silver paste was used as its binder. The sintered electrode was more sensitive and stable than the pressed electrode, and the silver selenide electrode more sensitive than the silver sulfide electrode to silver ion. The linear relationship between the electrode potential and logarithmic concentration of silver ion has been observed down to 10-6 M for the electrode. Several heavy metal ions except mercuric ion did not interfere this linearity, but halide, cyanide, and thiocyanate ions did intensively interfere owing to the formation of silver compounds and complexes. This electrode has been applied to the potentiometric titration for determining halide ion. It is concluded that interferences from ,$CN^-, SCN^-, S^-, I^-, Br^-, Cl^- and Hg^{2+}$ ions are detrimental to the practical use of the electrodes for measuring pAg.

  • Two Si wafers are bonded with indium-silver alloy using diffusion bonding method. When silver and indium thin films are contacted, they diffuse into each other and form inter-metallic compounds like $AgIn_2$, $Ag_2In$, $Ag_3In$ etc. These compounds are determined by ratio of two metals. From phase diagram of Ag-In alloy, we can get the ratio of $Ag_2In$, that has high melting point about 700$^{\circ}C$, approximately 2:1. This ratio was made by controlling of film thickness. And bonding was executed by annealing and adding pressures at a time. The joint of these wafers had been observed by SEM. And we had also seen the EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) data to analysis the component of samples.

  • The simple and facile radiation technique of the preparation of antibacterial biodegradable polymer films containing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) was described. The biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) films containing silver trifluoroacetate (Ag TFA) were prepared by a solvent casting method, and then the films were irradiated by electron beams at the various doses ranging from 20 to 200 kGy to form Ag NPs in the biodegradable polymers. The results of UV-vis and FE-SEM/EDX analyses revealed that the Ag NPs were successfully formed in the PBAT matrix during the electron beam irradiation, and their amounts were dependant on the absorbed dose and Ag TFA concentrations. Furthermore, on the basis of the results of the antibacterial test through disk diffusion and colony counting test, the irradiated PBAT/Ag TFA films exhibited the antibacterial property due to the formation of Ag NPs.

  • We newly propose the silver alloys of Ag-5wt%Ge-2.5wt%Cu(Ge1) and Ag-5wt%In-2.5wt%(In1) to overcome the tarnish and mechanically weak problems of the conventional sterling silver Ag-7.5wt%Cu (Cu1). We check the castability, surface color stability during process and wearing, and work hardening with plastic deformation of all three silver alloys. Our newly proposed silver alloys of Ge1 and In1 showed improved castability, anti-tarnish stability, and work hardening property compared to the conventional sterling silver, which implied that these alloys might be more appropriate for the high-end silver jewelry.
