  • Five Cu(II) compounds were obtained from different copper salts with btp ligands, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. The structure of coordination polymer 2 contains btp-bridged tetranuclear Cu(II) units weakly connected by nitrate ions, and the structure of a discrete Cu(II) molecule 1 contains acetates and btp ligands. With perchlorate anions, two btp ligands bridge Cu(II) ions to form a double zigzag chain 3, while a single zigzag chain 4 is created with sulfate anions. The reaction of $Cu(NO_{3})_{2}$ containing $NH_{4}PF_{6}$ with btp ligands also produced a polymeric compound 5 containing $Cu(H_{2}O)_{2}^{2+}$ and $Cu(NO_{3})_{2}$ units alternatively bridged by btp ligands with H-bonds between copper bonded water and nitrate oxygen atoms. Five Zn(II) compounds were obtained from different zinc salts with btp ligands, and the structures of polymeric compounds (6, 7 and 8) and monomeric compounds (9 and 10) were determined by X-ray crystallography. With nitrate, chloride and bromide anions, btp ligands bridge Zn(II) ions to form polymeric compounds (6, 7 and 8), but btp ligands coordinate to a Zn(II) ion to form monomeric complexes (9 and 10) with $PF_{6}^{-}$ and perchlorate anions. Four silver salts and btp ligands produced two kinds of structures, dinuclear 20-membered rings and one-dimensional zigzag chain depending on different anions. For $ClO_{4}^{-}$ and OTf anions, weak interactions between Ag(I) and anions make dinuclear 20-membered rings construct polymeric compounds (11 and 13). For $PF_{6}^{-}$ anion, there are also weak interactions between Ag(I) and $F(PF_{6}^{-})(12)$, but they do not construct a polymeric compound. For $O_{2}CCF_{3}^{-}$ anion, btp ligands bridge Ag(I) atoms to make one-dimensional zigzag chain (14), and there are also interactions between Ag(I) and anions.

  • The electrochemical behaviors of polycrystalline silver electrodes in 8M KOH solutions containing $Bi_2O_3$ were studied under various conditions by cyclic voltammetry, potentiostatic and galvanostatic techniques as well as the morphology of the silver oxide structures by SEM. It was found that three new compounds comprising silver, bismuth, and oxygen as well as $Bi_2O_3$, $Ag_2O$ and AgO were formed during the electrochemical oxidation of silver. In addition, the potentiostatic current transients were characterized by the appearances of the first current peaks corresponding to the formation of silver oxides, and the second current peaks corresponding to the Ag-Bi-O compounds, indicating the presence of the nucleation and 3D growth mechanism, in the potential regions of $Ag_2O$ and AgO, respectively. Microscopic examinations showed that two types of silver (I) oxide morphologies are formed in the potential region of $Ag_2O$.

  • Porous ceramic beads that had skeleton structure were impregnated with Ag from silver nitrate solution. Ag-impregnated porous ceramic beads were performed to evaluate the antibacterial properties on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, also, compared with commercial silver-activated carbon on antibacterial activity. As concentration of silver nitrate solution increased, deposited-Ag contents of outer and inner surface of beads were increased. The size of silver particles supported on porous ceramic bead were range of $0.5{\sim}2.0\;{\mu}m$. The observed effects of the prepared Ag-impregnated beads on antibacterial activity are as follows : i) Antibacterial activity should be directly proportional to silver nitrate solution and reaction time. ii) The antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli was better than that against Staphylococcus aureus.

  • Two methods for separation of the impurities from bismuth metal have been found by the use of Dowex $1{\times}4,$ anion exchange resins. The first method is that Dowex $1{\times}4$ resins are packed into the two stage columns (height of under stage is 22cm and upper stage is 3cm, and diameter of columns are 1.5cm), and the impurities of Pb(II), Ag(I) and Cu(II) are separated by the eluent of 7.5M HCl soln, Zn(II), Fe(III) by 0.5M HCl solns, and Te(IV) in the upper stage by 2M NaOH soln. Remained Au(III) in the upper stage is determined by the ignition with resins. The 2nd method is that for the separation of all the impurities simultaneously the same resins are packed into single stage column(height is 10cm and diameter is 1.5cm), and all the impurities of Pb(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(III) and Ag(I) are eluted by the eluent of 0.5M HCl soln. Separated impurities are determined by the colorimetry.

  • Most of the gold (-silver) vein deposits at Yeongdong District are mainly distributed in the precambrian metamorphic rocks. Based on the Ag/Au total production and ore grade ratios, the chemical composition of electrum and the associated sulfides, the gold(-silver) deposits at Yeongdong District may be classified into 4 classes: pyrrhotite - type gold deposits( I), pyrite - type gold deposits (IT A; massive vein), pyrite - type gold deposits (II B; nonmassive vein) and argentite - type gold - silver deposits(III). The chemical study on electrum(including native gold) revealed that Au content (2.8 to 92.4 atomic%) of electrums varies very widely for different classes of deposits. The Au content of electrum associated with pyrrhotite (Class I), ranging from 47.1 to 92.4 atomic% Au, is clearly higher than that associated with pyrite (Classes IIA, IIB and III). In contrast, classes I, II, and III deposits do not show clear differences in Au content of electrum. In general, pyrrhotite - type gold deposits(I) are characterized by features such as simply massive vein morphology, low values in the Ag/Au total production and ore grade ratios, the absence or rarity of silver - bearing minerals except electrum, and distinctively simple mineralogy. Although the geological and mineralogical features and vein morphology of pyrite - type gold deposits(IIA)are very similar to those of pyrrhotite - type gold deposits (I), Class II A deposits reveal significant differences in the associated iron sulfide (i. e. pyrite) with electrum and Au content of electrum. The Ag/Au total production and ore grade ratios from Class II A deposits are relatively slightly higher than those from Class I deposits. Pyrite - type gold deposits(II B) and argentite - type gold - silver deposits (III) have many common features; complex vein morphology, medium to high values in the Ag/Au total production and ore grade ratios and the associated iron sulfide (i. e. pyrite). In contrast to Class II B deposits, Class III deposits have significantly high Ag/Au total production and ore grade ratios. It indicates distinct difference in the abundance of silver minerals (i. e. native silver and argentite). The fluid inclusion analyses and mineralogical data of electrum tarnish method indicate that the gold mineralization of Classes I and II A deposits was deposited at temperatures between $230^{\circ}$ and $370^{\circ}C$, whereas the gold (-silver) mineralization of Classes ITB and ill formed from the temperature range of $150^{\circ}-290^{\circ}C$. Therefore, Classes I and IT A deposits have been formed at higher temperature condition and/or deeper positions than Classes IIB and III.

  • The dependence of substrate on the Ag photodoping phenomenon into amonhous $({\alpha}-)$ GeSe thin film has been investigated using holographic method. A 442 nm HeCd laser was utilized as a light source for the holographic exposure and a 632.8 nm HeNe laser to measure the variation of diffraction efficiency $(\eta)$ in real time. The films (Ag and ${\alpha}-GeSe$) were thermally deposited on the substrates, i.e. p-type Si(100), n-type Si(100) and slide glass. The sample structures prepared were two types: type I (Ag/${\alpha}$-SeGe/substrate) and type II (${\alpha}$-SeGe/Ag/substrate). The $\eta$ kinetics comprised to be three steps in which $\eta$ initially increases, is saturated to be maximized $(\eta_M)$, and then decreases relatively gradually. For the same substrate, the $\eta_M$ values of the type II were higher than those of type I. In addition, the type II exhibited the highest $\eta_M$ for p-type Si substrate, while that in type I was observed for n-type Si substrate. These tendency is explained by the diffusion of minority carrier in the films and the change of magnitude and direction in internal fields generated at the film interfaces. Atomic-force-microscope (AFM) was used to observe relief-type grating patterns.

  • The Sangeun ore deposit is located in a volcanic belt within the Gyeongsang Basin in south western Korea. The ore deposit is of representative epithermal Au-Ag quartz vein type developed in lapilli tuff. This paper presents the mineralization with special emphasis on mineral zoning of the deposits. Principal points are summarized as follows: (1) Four stages of mineralization are recognized based on macrostructures. From ealier to later they are stage I(arsenopyrite-pyrite-quartz), stage II(Au-Ag bearing Pb-Zn-quartz), stage III(barren quartz), and stage IV(dickite-quartz). (2) Electrum principally occurs with arsenopyrite and galena in stage II, and has chemical compositions of 72.9-67.1 Ag atom %, and has Ag/Au ratio of 2.69-2.04. (3) Sphalerite varies in its FeS content according to the mineralization stages; 22.03-18.60 mole % FeS and 1.33-0.23 mole % MnS in stage IB, 16.11-8.64 mole % FeS and 1.33-0.23 mole % MnS in stage II. (4) Alteration zones of mineral assemblage, from the vein to the wall-rock, consist of sericite - quartz - pyrite, sericite - quartz - dickite, sericite - chlorite plagioclase respectively.

  • An investigation of the coordination behavior of sulfur-containing mixed-donor tribenzo-macrocycles $L^1-L^3$ ($L^1$: 20-membered $O_3S_2$, $L^2$: 20-membered $O_2S_3$, and $L^3$: 23-membered $O_4S_2$) with $d^{10}$-metal ($Ag^+$, $Hg^{2+}$, and $Pb^{2+}$) salts is reported. The X-ray structures of five complexes (1-5) with different structural types and stoichiometries, including mono- to dinuclear species have been determined. Reactions of $L^2$ and $L^3$ with the silver(I) salts ($PF_6{^-}$ and $SCN^-$) afforded two dinuclear 2:2 (metal-to-ligand) complexes with different arrangements: a sandwich-type cyclic dinuclear complex $[Ag_2(L^2)_2](PF_6)_2{\cdot}3CH_2Cl_2$ (1) and a linear dinuclear complex $[Ag_2(L^3)_2(SCN)_2]$ (2), in which two monosilver(I) complex units are linked by an Ag-Ag contact. Reactions of $L^1$ and $L^2$ with mercury(II) salts ($SCN^-$ and $Cl^-$) gave a mononuclear 1:1 complexes $[Hg(L^1)(SCN)_2]$ (3) and $[Hg(L^2)Cl_2]$ (4) with anion coordination in both cases. $L^2$ reacts with lead(II) perchlorate to yield a mononuclear sandwich-type complex $[Pb(L^2)_2(ClO_4)_2]$ (5), giving an overall metal coordination geometry of eight with a square antiprism arrangement. From these results, the effects of the donor variation and the anioncoordination ability on the resulting topologies of the soft metal complexes are discussed.

  • We investigated the H I, He II and O III emission lines of the symbiotic star AG Peg, using the spectroscopic data secured at different phases in three periods at the Lick Observatory. We measured FWHM and the intensity of six O III Bowen lines and studied the efficiency of fluorescence mechanism. The mean FWHM of O III normal and Bowen lines observed during three time periods did not make much difference, while Bowen line intensities are about 4.0 times higher than the normal lines. Comparing the predicted and the observed ratios, we found that the observed intensities are higher than predicted intensities, except for O III ${\lambda}$ 3759.87. The O III ${\lambda}$ 3791.26 and 3754.67 intensity ratios observed only in 2001 are in good agreement with the predictions by Saraph and Seaton (1980). We obtained the Bowen efficiency parameter (R)=0.47 for 2002, but we could not find R for the other two periods of time. Because of this, based on the 2002 efficiency result, we calculated the intensity ratio of O III normal and Bowen lines relative to He II ${\lambda}$ 4685.68 and derive the efficiency variation with time period. The result showed that the efficiency is the highest in 1998 and the lowest in 2001. We conclude that the efficiencies with phase are caused by the electron temperature changes in the ionized gas. The efficiencies of AG Peg are likely to increase along with electron temperature. Our analysis results may be useful in understanding the physical conditions of the ionized shell in symbiotic star and the intensity ratio and efficiency variation.
