We demonstrated micro-scale conducting polymer patterning based on a selective surface treatment. A substrate with a patterned photoresist was immersed into OTS (Octadecyltrichlosilnae) solution. The protected substrate areas were hydrophilic after removing the PR resist, where a conducting polymer solution was coated selectively by spin-coating method.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the safety of Korean medicine treatment in patients vaccinated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19/AZD1222). Methods: We investigated patients at Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital who were vaccinated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine between June 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021. The safety of Korean medicine treatment was evaluated by examining adverse events that occurred within seven days of vaccination, including liver function and kidney function testing, assessment of the severity of adverse events, and examination of causality to vaccines and Korean medicine treatment. Results: Eleven patients vaccinated with the first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine were included. A total of 19 adverse events were reported: 15 systemic adverse events, three local adverse events, and one alanine aminotransferase increase. The most commonly reported systemic adverse events were fatigue (4 cases, 36.4%), headache (4 cases, 36.4%), and myalgia (4 cases, 36.4%). All adverse events were rated below moderate (grade 2) in severity. Systemic and local adverse events were evaluated as definitely related to vaccination and unlikely to be related to Korean medicine treatment, while alanine aminotransferase increase was evaluated as unlikely to be related to either the vaccine or Korean medicine treatment. Aspartate transaminase, Blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine were measured within the reference range after vaccination. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the severity and frequency of adverse events in patients vaccinated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine did not increase after Korean medicine treatment.
A laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the treatment of photographic processing wastewater by chemical oxidation and biological treatment system. The effect of reaction conditions such as hydrogen peroxide dosage, ferrous sulfate dosage and pH on the COD removal in Fenton oxidation were investigated. The optimal dosage of hydrogen peroxide was 2.58 M and 3.87 M for the developing and fixing process wastewater, respectively. The Fenton oxidation was most efficient in the pH range of 3-5 and the optimal condition for initial reaction pH was 5 for a developing process wastewater. With iron powder catalyst, the COD for a developing process wastewater was removed in lower pH than with ferrous sulfate catalyst. The removal efficiency of COD for refractory compounds such as Diethyleneglycol, Benzylalcohol, Hydroxylamine Sulfate, Ammonium Thiosulfate, Ammonium Ferric EDTA and Disodium EDTA in the photogaphic wastewater was found than 90% except Potassium Carbonate. When the photographic processing wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation was treated with batch activated sludge process, the addition of $KH_2PO_4$ as a phosphorous compound improved the removal efficiency of COD. During the continuous biological treatment of developing and fixing process wastewater after pretreatment by Fenton oxidation, the effluent COD concentration less than 100 mg/l was obtained at 0.425 and 0.25 kgCOD/m$^3$.d, respectively.
Objectives: The purpose of this review is to overview the studies of acupuncture treatment for pelvic inflammatory disease. Methods: In order to investigate the effect of acupuncture treatment for pelvic inflammatory disease, we searched relevant studies in Pubmed, Cochrane, Oasis, Korean studies Information Service System up to March 2019. After searching studies, we analyzed selected studies. Results: Five studies were included in this review. There were 1 randomized controlled studies and 4 before and after studies. The outcome measurement of pelvic inflammatory disease was divided into effective rate, physical examination, response, hematological parameter, pain. The acupuncture treatment was effective in improving pelvic inflammatory disease. Conclusions: This study shows that acupuncture treatment is one of effective treatment methods for pelvic inflammatory disease. Further large randomized placebo controlled trials will be needed.
After pretreatment with ginseng followed by induction of acute intoxication of alcohol, the activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), microsomal ethanol-oxidizing system (MEOS) and aldehyde dehydrogenase(Ald DH) increased respectively compared to the groups treated with alcohol alone. In case that ginseng was given to rats fed with 5% alcohol instead of water for 60 days, the activities of ADH and MEOS increased compared to the groups treated. On the contrary, the activity of Ald DH in mitochondrial fraction decreased to an extent of about 35% in chronic alcoholism, but after pretreatment of ginseng the activity was restored to the control level. On the other hand, the catalase activity was not significantly affected by either treatment. Ginseng butanol fraction significantly increased the serum isocitrate dehydrogenase activity which is inhibited by alcohol-treated in rat. Alcohol-induced lactate dehydrogenase activity was decreased to control level in liver by ginseng treatment. And the serum level of lactic acid also decreased by ginseng treatment in alcohol-intoxicated rat. Ginseng butanol fraction markedly decreased the xanthine oxidase activity in the ethanol-treated rat liver. It was also observed that ginseng reduced the blood concentration of uric acid on experimentally reduced hyperuricemia by alcohol treatment. Uricase activity was not affected by either treatment. Ginseng butanol fraction decreased the hepatic aniline hydroxylase activity which was induced by alcohol-treated rat. These results suggest that the treatment with ginseng can be promoted the recovery from alcohol intoxication and some therapeutic effect on alcoholinduced metabolic disease.
Introduction: Psoriasis is a major health concern around the world. Physicians of the Unani system of medicine have been treating psoriasis for centuries. Aim: The purpose of our study was to assess the effect of Majoon Mundi (a semisolid Unani medication intended for oral intake used as blood purifier) and Qairooti Karnab (a Unani medication in paste form intended for topical application used as emollient) in the treatment $na{\ddot{i}}ve$ psoriasis cases and to collect data to warrant further clinical trials. Material and Methods: Psoriasis cases were diagnosed clinically. Data were collected during treatment of five patients of psoriasis treated with the Majoon Mundi (oral intake of 5 gm twice daily with 200 ml of water for 12 weeks) and Qairooti Karnab (topical application on affected sites twice a day for 12 weeks). Patients were treated for 12 weeks. Treatment response was seen with clinical improvement in skin lesions and measurement of Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI Scoring) before and after treatment. Results: Reduced PASI Score was observed in all five patients after 12 weeks of treatment [PASI before and after treatment was (mean${\pm}$SD) $20.7{\pm}4.6$ vs. $3.2{\pm}1.8$; p-value <0.05.]. Clinical improvement was noticed within an average of 4 weeks of treatment. Conclusion: Preliminary findings indicate the potential therapeutic role of Majoon Mundi and Qairooti Karnab in the treatment of psoriasis. Clinical trials based on this Unani pharmacopeial formulation should be conducted to explore the therapeutic potential of this formulation in psoriasis
The objective of this study was to evaluate the combined effects of lactoperoxidase system (LPS), thermal treatment and storage time on total microflora and psychrotrophs counts of the marinated broiler drumsticks. A marinade that contained acetic acid (1%) and salt (3%) with pH adjusted to 4 was developed as a standardized marinade. Drumsticks were marinated with various LPS levels, combined with thermal treatment (4 or $58^{\circ}C$ for 2 min), and then stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 18 h. The microbial counts of the samples were measured after 0, 2, 4 and 7 days of storage for drumsticks held at $4^{\circ}C$. The results indicate that adding LPS at the level of 1 unit ($1{\mu}g/ml$ LP, 5.9 mM KSCN, and 2.5 mM $H_2O_2$) significantly (p<0.05) decreased the total microflora and psychrotrophs counts of the marinated broiler drumsticks. In addition, samples treated with a thermal treatment ($58^{\circ}C$ for 2 min) had significantly (p<0.05) lower microbial counts when compared with the control.
Objectives: Most of the time after chemotherapy for ovarian cancer, the immune system is getting even worse with reduction of whole blood cell. The purpose of this study is to report the effect of korean medical treatment on Sequela including pancytopenia after chemotherapy for recurrent ovarian cancer after hysterectomy. Methods: The patient having treated with hospital management from June 8th in 2017 until July 5th in 2017, participated. Her chief complaints were fatigue, tinnitus, dizziness, decreased appetite due to glossodynia and constipation. We diagnosed her as pancytopenia based on her whole blood test result. We treated the patient with acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping and moxibustion. The efficacy of treatment was evaluated with Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and blood test. Results: During hospitalization period, the symptoms including fatigue, tinnitus, dizziness, decreased appetite, constipation and pancytopenia were reduced. After discharging, we identified that her blood levels are maintained and ovarian cancer no longer recurred. Conclusions: To recover from Sequela including pancytopenia following chemotherapy for recurrent ovarian cancer after hysterectomy, Korean medical treatment is considered to be effective.
A demonstrative operation of a membrane system with its caparity of 3,600m$^3$/d was carried out using reservoir water as raw water for the application of membrane filtration system to drinking water treatment. The operation was undertaken at a constant flux of 0.9 m$^3$/m$^2$/d for three months. Backwashing with NaClO of 3 ppm was allowed for 30 seconds every 20 minutes of filtration. Physical cleaning was introduced after 69 times of filtration/backwashing cycle with air-scrubbing and backwashing for 1 minute, and flushing for 2 minutes. In this study, water treatment performance was investigated compared with the existing rapid sand filtration process. The membrane system was operated with no significant problems during the test period. Higher water quality was obtained in the membrane filtration than in the rapid sand filtration in terms of particulate matters such as turbidity and microbes. Although the finished water of the membrane filtration contained slightly higher concentration in dissolved matters than that of the conventional one, it met the drinking water standard. The demonstrative operation showed that membrane filtration has a reliability in drinking water treatment. Researches should be needed on cost analysis through long-term operation and optimization of operation condition for further application.
