EFL Context and Learners' Affective factors in Korean Secondary Education

  • This paper attempts to discuss the complex nature of social contexts regarding English language education in Korean middle school and to demonstrate the affective factors that should be considered to find appropriate approaches within the context. To do this, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 85 middle school students regarding learners' motivation, and attitudes toward EFL learning. Additionally, teachers in secondary school were asked about the general circumstances of English language education. Findings indicate that in spite of the participants' high instrumental motivation, they rather show a negative attitude toward English learning. This paper intends to raise practitioners' attention to the fact that the effect of learners' affective variables on EFL learning seems distinctive depending on the host country's EFL contexts.

상호또래교수 활동이 고등학생들의 수학교과에 대한 정의적 특성에 미치는 영향 (A study on the effects of the reciprocal peer tutoring in high school students' affective characteristics of mathematics)

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of the reciprocal peer tutoring in high school students' affective characteristics with respect to mathematics. The study was conducted with 111 first graders in one high school located in Gyeonggi-do, and the study lasted for 1 year in regular mathematics classrooms. According to the results, reciprocal peer tutoring was very effective in improving students' interest and self-efficacy toward mathematics and reducing mathematics anxiety. Especially, in high and low performing student groups, there were statistically significant improvements in affective factors such as interest, self-efficacy toward mathematics, and mathematics anxiety after reciprocal peer tutoring. However, average performing student group showed statistically significant improvements in affective factors of interest and self-efficacy toward mathematics.

  • 지난 10여 년간 프라이버시 문헌에서 중요한 연구흐름들 중의 하나는 자기노출과 관련한 의사결정 과정인 비용-혜택 분석에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 발견하는 것이었다. 그러나 인간의 행동은 인지적 요인뿐만 아니라 정서적 요인에 의해서도 크게 영향을 받음에도 불구하고, 기존 연구에서 발견된 요인들 대부분은 인지적 속성을 갖는 요인들이었다. 본 연구는 이러한 불균형적 상황에 대한 인식을 토대로 자기노출 의사결정에 영향을 미치는 정서적 요인으로서 SNS 즐거움과 SNS 피로감의 역할을 검토한다. 데이터 분석결과, 자기노출 의사결정에 대한 이러한 정서적 요인들의 영향이 적지 않고, 또한 SNS 피로감 보다 SNS 즐거움의 영향 정도가 크다는 사실을 발견하였다. 정서적 요인들과 의사결정 요인들 사이의 관련성은 일치효과 메커니즘에 의해서 긍정적 정서는 긍정적 평가요인에만(혜택요인), 부정적 정서는 부정적 평가요인에만(비용요인) 차별적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 이러한 분석결과를 토대로 향후 연구를 위한 의미있는 시사점들을 논의한다.

  • The aim of affective engineering is to develop a new product by translating customer affections into design factors. Affective data have so far been analyzed using a multivariate statistical analysis, but the affective data do not always have linear features assumed under normal distribution. Rough sets model is an effective method for knowledge discovery under uncertainty, imprecision and fuzziness. Rough sets model is to deal with any type of data regardless of their linearity characteristics. Therefore, this study utilizes rough sets model to extract affective knowledge from affective data. Four types of scent alternatives and four types of sounds were designed and the experiment was performed to look into affective differences in subject's preference on air conditioner. Finally, the purpose of this study also is to extract knowledge from affective data using rough sets model and to figure out the relationships between rough sets based affective engineering method and statistical one. The result of a case study shows that the proposed approach can effectively extract affective knowledge from affective data and is able to discover the relationships between customer affections and design factors. This study also shows similar results between rough sets model and statistical method, but it can be made more valuable by comparing fuzzy theory, neural network and multivariate statistical methods.

간호학과 학생들의 협동적 정보행태에 대한 만족도와 정서적 경험에 관한 연구 (Undergraduate Nursing Students' User Satisfaction and Affective Experiences of Collaborative Information Behavior)

  • 본 연구는 간호학과 학생들의 그룹과제 시 협동적 정보행태에서 나타나는 만족도 및 정서적 경험 등을 설문조사하여 이들의 관계에 대해 종합적으로 분석해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 이용자들의 협동적 정보검색에서 나타나는 긍정적 또는 부정적 정서에 대한 평가는 동일 설문지에서 PANAS 척도를 이용하여 정서적 경험을 측정하였다. 학생들의 협동적 정보검색에 대한 경험은 정서적 측면과 상관관계를 살펴보고, 일반적 특성, 협동적 정보검색에 대한 경험, 정서적 측면과의 통계적 우의성은 t-test로 분석하였다. 연구결과, 간호학과 학생들의 협동적 정보검색과 정서적 경험은 상관관계가 있었으며, 또한 학생들의 일반적 특성, 협동적 정보검색과 정서적 경험은 통계적으로 유의미한 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 학생들의 성별과 '전반적 협동에 대한 만족도', 학생들의 성별과 긍정적 정서에서 유의미한 상관관계를 나타내었다. 본 연구를 통해서 협동적 정보행태에서 정서적 경험에 대한 후속 연구에 가능성을 발견하였다.

  • In recent days, it is stressed that problem solving ability and inference ability to get a higer accomplishment are very important. The purpose of this research is to explore the affective factors related the problem solving ability and reasoning ability. Also, we explored the difference between the two affective factors focusing on 6th graders in primary school.

Emotional Intelligence Profile and Employee Attitude

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to identify emotional intelligence (EI) profiles according to the sub-factors of the ability EI model, namely, self-emotional appraisal, others' emotional appraisal, regulation of emotion, and use of emotion. In addition, this study aims to reveal whether there is a difference in job satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intention depending on the profile. Research design, data, and methodology - For the study, 536 survey responses were analyzed using SPSS 22 and MPlus 8.4. Result - The analysis identified four EI profiles. These were 1) middle-low generalized EI (all sub-factors of EI were slightly lower than the average level), 2) middle-high generalized EI (all sub-factors of EI were slightly higher than the average), 3) low generalized EI (all EI sub-factors were much lower than the average), and 4) high generalized EI (all EI sub-factors were much higher than average). Furthermore, significant differences were found in job satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intention according to each profile. Conclusion - This study expands the EI theory by revealing the profile of EI. In addition, this study investigated the impact of EI profile on job satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intention.

윈도우즈 운영체제를 중심으로 한 경고음의 감성공학적 설계 (Affective Design of Warning Sounds used in Windows Operating Systems)

  • In order to properly design warning sounds that are affectively suitable to computer users, warning sounds used in Windows operating system were analyzed in terms of their sound properties; frequency band, spectral characteristics and physical intensity. A total of 36 warning sounds (3*4*3) were generated and tested with respect to three experimental variables. Among 178 collected affective adjectives that are related to hearing and sounds, seven representative affective adjectives were abstracted by statistical grouping techniques. In the experiment, subjective preference tests were performed for the 36 warning sounds according to the seven affective factors. From the result, the affective factors were again grouped into three major factors and the 60dB boost-type warning sounds at the low frequency band were, in general, the most preferred. followed by the 70dB cut-type sounds at the middle frequency band. These warning sounds have a characteristic of boost power spectrum below 1000Hz frequency band and received good scores on simplicity, clarity and accurateness.

유아의 정서적 공감능력, 어머니의 공감능력 및 유아의 친사회적 행동 간의 관계 (The Relationship between a Child's Affective Empathy, a Mother's Empathy, and the Child's Prosocial Behavior)

  • The purpose of this research is to understand the relationship between children's affective empathy, their mother's cognitive and affective empathy, and children's prosocial behavior; as well as to examine ways of enhancing children's prosocial behavior by analyzing the factors affecting its development. The results of this study may be summarized as follows. First, girls generally had higher levels of empathetic ability and pro-social behavior than boys. Secondly, there was not to be no significant correlation between the children's affective empathetic ability and the mothers' cognitive and affective empathetic abilities. However, there was a significant association between the affective empathy of the children and the mothers' cognitive empathetic abilities with the children's prosocial behavior. Thirdly, both the affective empathy of the children and the mothers' cognitive empathy predicted the level of the children's prosocial behavior.

일개 종합병원 간호사의 조직몰입, 간호업무환경, 사회적 지지 (Nurses' Perception of Organizational Commitment, Nursing Work Environment, and Social Support in a General Hospital)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the influence of nursing work environment and social support on multidimensional organizational commitment among nurses. Methods: The survey was conducted in August 2012 with self-report questionnaire. Participants were 480 registered nurses working in one general hospital. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression using SPSS/WIN(16.0). Results: The average scores were; for affective commitment 2.84, for continuance commitment 2.48, and for normative commitment 2.57. There were significant relationships between affective, continuance, normative commitment and sub-factors of nursing work environment and social support. The affective, continuance, and normative commitment were all influenced by 'staffing and resource adequacy' and 'nursing foundations for quality of care', sub-factors of nursing work environment. Distinctively, affective commitment was influenced by 'staffing and resource adequacy', nurses' age, 'nurse-doctor relations', 'supervisor's emotional support', 'nurse participation in hospital affairs', 'nursing foundations for quality of care', and 'supervisor's informational support', which explained 30.9% of variance in affective commitment(F=31.57, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings show that programs which promote supervisors' emotional and informational support are important to enhance nurses' affective commitment. Also, it is necessary to improve nursing work environment to improve nurses' organizational commitment.
