Additively manufactured, small rocket engines are perhaps the focal activities of space startups that are developing low-cost launch vehicles. Rocket engine companies such as SpaceX and Rocket Lab in the United States, Ariane Group in Europe, and IHI in Japan have already adopted the additive manufacturing process in building key components of their rocket engines. In this paper on technology trends, an existing valve housing of a rocket engine is chosen as a case study to examine the feasibility of using additively manufactured parts for rocket engines.
Nonlinear state estimation is a desirable and required technique for many situations in engineering (e.g., aircraft/spacecraft tracking, space situational awareness, collision warning, radar tracking, etc.). Due to high standards on performance in these applications, in the last few decades, there was an increasing demand for methods that are able to provide more accurate results. However, because of the mathematical complexity introduced by the nonlinearities of the models, the nonlinear state estimation uses techniques that, in practice, are not so well-established which, leads to sub-optimal results. It is important to take into account that each method will have advantages and limitations when facing specific environments. The main objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview and interpretation of the most well-known methods for nonlinear state estimation with Gaussian priors. In particular, the Kalman filtering methods: EKF (Extended Kalman Filter), UKF (Unscented Kalman Filter), CKF (Cubature Kalman Filter) and EnKF (Ensemble Kalman Filter) with an aerospace perspective.

Positioning signals transmitted by Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites located at approximately 20,000 km height is very weak. For the reason, GPS signals are vulnerable to intentional jamming and unintentional disturbance. Recently, the number of jamming has been increased significantly all over the world. For the applications where continuous and reliable positioning is required when GPS jammers are activated, other positioning systems are strongly required. In this work, a set of Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA)-based transmitters and receivers utilizing Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) and GNU Radio are designed and implemented. To eliminate the undesirable effects of GPS jamming, a frequency band which does not overlap L band is utilized. To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, an experiment was performed.

A Power control and Distribution Unit (PCDU) plays roles of protection of battery against overcharge by active control of solar array generated power, distribution of unregulated electrical power via controlled outlets to bus and instrument units, distribution of regulated electrical power to selected bus and instrument units, and provision of status monitoring and telecommand interface allowing the system and ground operate the power system, evaluate its performance and initiate appropriate countermeasures in case of abnormal conditions. In this work, we perform the preliminary design of a PCDU for the small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite applications. The main constitutes of the PCDU are the battery interface module, solar array regulators with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technology, heater power distribution modules, internal converter modules for regulated bus voltage generation, power distribution modules of unregulated and regulated primary bus, and instrument power distribution modules.

A significant source of vibration in helicopters is the main rotor system, and it is a technical challenge to reduce the vibration in order to ensure the comfort of crew and passengers. Several types of passive devices have been applied to conventional helicopters in order to reduce the vibration. In recent years, helicopter manufacturers have increasingly adopted active vibration control systems (AVCSs) due to their superior performance with lower weight compared with passive devices. AVCSs can also maintain their performance over aircraft configuration and flight condition changes. As part of the development of AVCS software for light civil helicopter (LCH) applications, a test bench is constructed and vibration control tests and simulations are performed in this study. The test bench, which represents the airframe, is excited using a pair of counter rotating force generators (CRFGs) and a multiple input single output (MISO) AVCS that consists of three accelerometer sensors and a pair of CRFGs; a filtered-x least mean square (LMS) algorithm is applied for the vibration reduction. First, the vibration control tests are performed with uniform sensor weights; then, the change in the control performance according to changes in the sensor weight is investigated and compared with the simulation results. It is found that the vibration control performance can be tuned through adjusting the weights of the three sensors, even if only one actuator is used.

Recently, with the growth of various sensor applications, the need of wireless communication systems which can support variable data rate is increasing. IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN system using 2.45 GHz frequency band is very popular for the sensor applications. However, since LR-WPAN only supports the data rate of 250 kbps, it has a limit to be applied to various sensor networks. Therefore, we define the preamble structure which can support the data rates of 31.25 kbps, 62.5 kbps, 125 kbps, and present the low-complexity hardware architecture for time synchronizer based on double-correlation algorithm which can resist the CFO (carrier frequency offset). Implementation results show that the proposed time synchronizer include the logic slice of 18.36 K and four DSP48s, which are reduced at the rate of 79.1% and 99.4%, respectively, compared with existing architecture.

In this paper, we propose an efficient object detection and classification algorithm for video surveillance applications. Previous researches mainly concentrated either on object detection or classification using particular type of feature e.g., Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) or Speeded Up Robust Feature (SURF) etc. In this paper we propose an algorithm that mutually performs object detection and classification. We combinedly use heterogeneous types of features such as texture and color distribution from local patches to increase object detection and classification rates. We perform object detection using spatial clustering on interest points, and use Bag of Words model and Naive Bayes classifier respectively for image representation and classification. Experimental results show that our combined feature is better than the individual local descriptor in object classification rate.

The control moment gyroscope(CMG) which is well known as an effective high-torque-generating device is applicable to space vehicles, airplanes, ships, automobiles, robotics, etc. for attitude stabilization and maneuver. This paper deals with the overall details of 100Nm-class CMG development for various industrial applications, and provides the activities and results associated with the CMG system-level requirement analysis, the motor subsystem design/manufacturing/integration, the construction of ground support equipment, and the performance test and evaluation. The performance test reveals that the CMG generates the torque output more than 120Nm in as-designed operation of spin motor and gimbal motor.
Recently, researchers are actively addressed to utilize Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAV) for military and industry applications. One of these applications is to trace the preceding flight when it is necessary to track the route of the suspicious reconnaissance aircraft in secret, and it is necessary to estimate the attitude of the target flight such as Roll, Yaw, and Pitch angles in each instant. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating in real time the attitude of a target aircraft using the video information that is provide by an external camera of a following aircraft. Various image processing methods such as color space division, template matching, and statistical methods such as linear regression were applied to detect and estimate key points and Euler angles. As a result of comparing the X-plane flight data with the estimated flight data through the simulation experiment, it is shown that the proposed method can be an effective method to estimate the flight attitude information of the previous flight.

Titanium hydride potassium perchlorate (THPP) is one of the commonly utilized pyrotechnic materials in aerospace industries. The current study elucidates the effects of hygrothermal aging on the combustion of THPP experimentally. First, applying the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and isocoversional method, both the delay of reaction start and decrease in maximum reaction rate were observed. The kinetics parameters tended to fluctuate depending the thermal reaction or intermediate product formation of THPP. Also, the oxidants decomposition and fuel oxidation phenomenon were discovered by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The experimental heat from DSC data were verified as reasonable by comparing with the theoretical heat obtained utilizing both THPP formulation from XPS and NASA Chemical Equilibrium with Applications (CEA). Both data had identical variation trend, which expecially had the highest heat value at 10 weeks aged sample.
