This report describes the procedure of detailed design and structural test for the composite flexure which is a part of the hingeless hub system. First, stacking sequence design for composite flexure was done, and structural analysis by using NASTRAN was made to verify structural stability and safety. Using FPS installed at KIMM, composite flexure was laid up and cured using a autoclave. Before rotor ground test, the basic structural tests such as a bench test, tensile strength test and shear strength test, for flexure, were accomplished. Through replacing existing metal hub part with new fabricated composite flexure, improvement of aeroelastic stability and weight reduction were achieved. This result will be applied to composite rotor system design fur helicopter.

To augment weakly damped lag mode stability of a hingeless helicopter rotor blade in hover, piezoelectric shunt with a resistor and an inductor circuits for passive damping has been studied. A shunted piezoceramics bonded to a flexure of rotor blade converts mechanical strain energy to electrical charge energy which is dissipated through the resistor in the R-L series shunt circuit. Because the fundamental lag mode frequency of a soft-in-plane hingeless helicopter rotor blade is generally about 0.7/rev, the design frequency of the blade system with flexure sets to be so. Experimentally, the measured lag mode frequency is 0.7227/rev under the short circuit condition. Therefore the suppression mode of this passive damping vibration absorber is adjusted to 0.7227/rev. As a result of damping enhancement using passive control, the passive damper which consists of a piezoelectric material and shunt circuits has a stabilizing effect on inherently weakly damped lag mode of the rotor blades, at the optimum tuning and resistor condition.
The flow around a structure has been an important subject in wind engineering research. There are various kinds of unstable aerodynamic phenomena with regard to a bluff body. In order to understand the physical mechanism of aerodynamic and aeroelastic instability of a bluff body, the relations between the flow around structures and the motion of body with various section shapes should be investigated. Based on a series of wind tunnel tests, this paper addresses the aerodynamic stability of square cylinder with various corner cuts and attack angles in the uniform flow. The test results show that the models with corner cut produced generally better behaviour for the galloping phenomenon than the original section. However, the corner cut method can not prevent the occurrence of the vortex-induced vibration(VIV). It is also shown that as the attack angle changes, the optimum size of corner cut changes also. This means that any one specific size of corner cut which shows the best aerodynamic behaviour throughout all the cases of attack angles does not exist. This paper presents an intensive study on obtaining the optimum size of corner cut for the stabilization of aerodynamic behaviour of cylinders.
Section model test, as the most commonly used method to evaluate the aerostatic and aeroelastic performances of long-span bridges, may be carried out under different conditions of incoming wind speed, geometric scale and wind tunnel facilities, which may lead to potential Reynolds number (Re) effect, model scaling effect and wind tunnel scale effect, respectively. The Re effect and scale effect on aerostatic force coefficients and aeroelastic characteristics of streamlined bridge decks were investigated via 1:100 and 1:60 scale section model tests. The influence of auxiliary facilities was further investigated by comparative tests between a bare deck section and the deck section with auxiliary facilities. The force measurement results over a Re region from about 1×105 to 4×105 indicate that the drag coefficients of both deck sections show obvious Re effect, while the pitching moment coefficients have weak Re dependence. The lift coefficients of the smaller scale models have more significant Re effect. Comparative tests of different scale models under the same Re number indicate that the static force coefficients have obvious scale effect, which is even more prominent than the Re effect. Additionally, the scale effect induced by lower model length to wind tunnel height ratio may produce static force coefficients with smaller absolute values, which may be less conservative for structural design. The results with respect to flutter stability indicate that the aerodynamic-damping-related flutter derivatives 𝘈*2 and 𝐴*1𝐻*3 have opposite scale effect, which makes the overall scale effect on critical flutter wind speed greatly weakened. The most significant scale effect on critical flutter wind speed occurs at +3° wind angle of attack, which makes the small-scale section models give conservative predictions.
The aeroelastic stability of a long-span suspension footbridge with a bluff deck (prototype section) was examined through static and dynamic wind tunnel tests using a 1:10 scale sectional model of the main girder, and the corresponding aerodynamic countermeasures were proposed in order to improve the stability. First, dynamic tests of the prototype sectional model in vertical and torsional motions were carried out at three attack angles (α = 3°, 0°, -3°). The results show that the galloping instability of the sectional model occurs at α = 3° and 0°, an observation that has never been made before. Then, the various aerodynamic countermeasures were examined through the dynamic model tests. It was found that the openings set on the vertical web of the prototype section (web-opening section) mitigate the galloping completely for all three attack angles. Finally, static tests of both the prototype and web-opening sectional models were performed to obtain the aerodynamic coefficients, which were further used to investigate the galloping mechanism by applying the Den Hartog criterion. The total damping of the prototype and web-opening models were obtained with consideration of the structural and aerodynamic damping. The total damping of the prototype model was negative for α = 0° to 7°, with the minimum value being -1.07%, suggesting the occurrence of galloping, while that of the web-opening model was positive for all investigated attack angles of α = -12° to 12°.

The aeroelastic stability enhancement of composite hingeless rotor system through the structural damping increase has been investigated. In order to increase structural damping of the rotor system, constrained layer damping (CLD) treatment is applied to the composite flexures. Modal analysis of composite flexures with attached viscoelastic and constraining layers are performed using MSC/NASTRAN, and the effectiveness of CLD treatments are validated through modal test. The composite flexures with CLD are applied to a hingeless rotor system. The rotor system is tested in hovering condition and it is shown that in-plane damping is increased by means of CLD treatments.
Wind tunnel tests were conducted on a model of deck section from the Ting Kau cable stayed bridge. The purpose of the tests was to determine the set of aerodynamic derivatives conventionally used to describe the motion-induced forces arising from the wind flow, and to investigate the stability of the deck under different conditions of turbulence and angle of attack. The study shows that except for large negative angles of attack the deck section itself is stable up to a high wind speed, and that when instability does occur it is essentially a single degree of freedom (torsional) flutter.

Modern aircraft are required to carry various external stores mounted at different locations on the wing. Sometimes the attachment of stores to an aircraft wing leads to flutter speed reduction, which is a very severe aeroelastic problem. In order to suppress structural vibration and expand the flutter boundary of the aircraft with stores, it is necessary to investigate the main problems and characteristics of them. In addition, active vibration control may be required because passive vibration isolators show limited capabilities for the various wing/store configuration. In this paper, therefore, the flutter stability to the various wing/store configurations was investigated and active vibration control of wing/store model was performed using a piezoelectric actuator.

The effect of the changes in parameter angles(precone, droop, sweep) on the lead-lag damping was focused on. Experiment was made with hingeless 4-blade rotors and NACA 0012 airfoil. For the measurement of the rotating natural frequencies and lead-lag damping, non-rotating swash plate was oscillated at the regressing lag mode frequency and the data were acquired after the excitation was cut off. Analysis was made using a finite element formulation based on Hamilton's principle. The main blade is assumed as elastic beams. Quasi-steady strip theory is used to obtain aerodynamic forces, and non-circulatory forces are also included.

The stable motion has been judged by mathematical modeling of the conditions that a rocket flies flexibly to take an active part in atmosphere. In this paper, the rocket conditions consist of the air speed, thrust and automatic attitude control. Aerodynamic force, a critical trust and a critical air speed are determined by comparing mathematical knowledges with eigenfrequencies of vibration equation. And then rocket object model is designed. Parameters and eigenfrequencies are used in dimensionless forms for in general applications by eliminating restrictions such as dimension, weight and select of materials.
