  • The aerodynamic power and torque of wind turbines are extremely nonlinear. Therefore, the overall dynamic behavior of a wind turbine exhibits nonlinear characteristics that are dependent on the magnitude of the wind speed. The nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics of the wind turbine also affect the characteristics of the control system of the wind turbine. Therefore, the analysis of the nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics of wind turbine is essential in designing the wind-turbine controller. In this study, the nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics and the effects of these characteristics on the closed-loop pitch system with PI controller for an 1-mass model of the wind turbine are investigated above rated power.

  • This paper reviews shape optimization studies for tall and super-tall building design. Firstly, shape effects on aerodynamic and response characteristics are introduced and discussed. Effects of various configurations such as corner modifications, taper, setback, openings, and twists are examined. Comprehensive comparative studies on various configurations including polygon building models, and composite type building models such as corner-cut and taper, corner-cut and taper and helical, and so on, are also discussed under the conditions of the same height and volume. Aerodynamic characteristics are improved by increasing the twist angle of helical buildings and increasing the number of sides of polygon buildings, but a twist angle of $180^{\circ}$ and a number of sides of 5 (pentagon) seem to be enough. The majority of examined configurations show better aerodynamic characteristics than straight-square. In particular, composite type buildings and helical polygon buildings show significant improvement. Next, shape effects on pedestrian-level wind characteristics around tall and super-tall buildings are introduced and discussed. Corner modification buildings show significant reductions in speed-up areas. On the other hand, setback and tapered models with wider projected widths near the ground show adverse effects on pedestrian-level wind characteristics.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of crescent and D-shape bundled conductors were measured by high frequency force balance technique in the wind tunnel. The drag and lift coefficients of each sub-conductor and the whole bundled conductors were presented under various attack angles of wind. The galloping possibility of bundled conductors is discussed based on the Den Hartog criterion. The influence of icing thickness, initial ice accretion angle and sub-conductor on the aerodynamic properties were investigated. Based on the measured aerodynamic force coefficients, a computationally efficient finite element method is also implemented to analyze galloping of iced bundled conductors. The analysis results show that each sub-conductor of the bundled conductor has its own galloping feature due to the use of aerodynamic forces measured separately for every single sub-conductors.

  • The paper presents an improved way of aerodynamic quality in Korean Very High Speed Railway, The pantograph model being under development dissatisfies the required grade of aerodynamic lift force. So the present work proposes modified configurations of panheads to maintain consistent aerodynamic characteristics. Analysis has been performed using commercial CFD program. Simulation based analysis has been conducted with two different models. One is to attach the thin plate on the crossbar and the other is the use of trapezoidal cross section in contact strip. Various length of thin plate is simulated for flow velocity and acceptable value of plate length is selected which satisfy the necessary average lift force. Aerodynamic variation on the panheads strip is studied.

  • The present paper discusses the characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic forces on long-span curved roofs. A forced vibration test is carried out in a wind tunnel to investigate the effects of wind speed, vibration amplitude, reduced frequency of vibration and rise/span ratio of the roof on the unsteady aerodynamic forces. Because the range of parameters tested in the wind tunnel experiment is limited, a CFD simulation is also made for evaluating the characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic forces on the vibrating roof over a wider range of parameters. Special attention is paid to the effect of reduced frequency of vibration. Based on the results of the wind tunnel experiment and CFD simulation, the influence of the unsteady aerodynamic forces on the dynamic response of a full-scale long-span curved roof is investigated on the basis of the spectral analysis.

  • Aerodynamic design of the vane type multi-function probe was tried by using CFD and wind tunnel test for the MALE UAV and small business jets. The present multi-function probe can measure total pressure, static pressure and angle of attack by using rotating vane. Therefore major performances are determined by aerodynamic characteristics of vane. In oder to design the sensor compatible to the requirement, aerodynamic characteristics of sensors was investigated by using CFD and dynamic response analysis was also performed for trasient performance. The final aerodynamic performance was measured by the wind tunnel test at Aeorsonic and the results successfully used for the design of vane type multi-function air data sensor.

  • For the reduction of fuel consumption of high speed, the aerodynamic drag must be reduced. In early vehicle design process, it is very important to have information about aerodynamic characteristics of design models. In this phase CFD methods are usually used to predict the aerodynamic forces. But commercial programs using turbulence models cannot give a good agreement with experimental result and have also problems with convergence. PowerFLOW employs a new technology called DIGITAL PHYSICS, which provides a different approach to simulating fluids. DIGITAL PHYSICS uses a lattice-based approach (extended from lattice-gas and lattice-Boltzmann methods) where time, space and velocity are discrete. This discrete system represents the Wavier-Stokes continuum behavior without the numerical instability Issues of traditional CFD solvers, such as convergence. In this paper, aerodynamic performance of vehicles are simulated using PowerFLOW by Exa and results are compared with experimental wind tunnel data.

  • The effect of rear-spoiler attached at rear end of automobile trunk on the aerodynamic characteristics of a MIRA reference car model was experimentally investigated. For different shapes and positions(G/H) of the rear-spoiler, the aerodynamic forces on the automobile were measured at various flow speed(ReL). The effect of rear-spoiler on the wake structure behind the automobile was also investigated using flow visualization and hot-wire anemometer. The rear-spoiler modifies the near wake structure and decreases aerodynamic drag and increases driving stability compared with those of the conventional automobile without rear-spoiler. From the experimental results, rear-spoiler of airfoil shape installed at the position of G/H=0.084 shows the best aerodynamic performance.

  • Aerodynamic shape design of the Mid-sized Aerostat was performed with computational fluid dynamics. Design procedure included determination of hull volume and length, hull shape, tailfin configuration with anhedral and location, tailfin section. For aerodynamic analysis, three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations were applied with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. During design procedure, static moment derivatives were mainly considered for the stability of aerostat and structural limitations were also considered for practical application of the designed shape. Aerodynamic analysis of the designed aerostat was carried out and aerodynamic characteristics were compared with those of the TCOM 71m aerostat, one of the most successful commercial aerostats. It was found that the designed KARI Mid-sized Aerostat had better stability characteristics compared to the TCOM 71m aerostat.

  • This paper aims to describe the aerodynamic vibrations of various structural elements of bridges, which are particular issues at present. The aerodynamic countermeasures for those vibrations are also discussed considering the generation mechanisms of the aerodynamic instabilities. In this paper, an example of vortex-induced oscillation of bridge deck and its lesson are discussed. Next, the wind-induced cable vibration and its aerodynamic countermeasures are reviewed. Then, the aerodynamic characteristics on two edge girders and their feasibility for application to long span cable-stayed bridges are considered. Furthermore, the bridge decks for future long span bridges are proposed and their aerodynamic characteristics are also discussed.
