  • Recently both high performance and low noise for a cooling fan used in a server computer have been required. In this study, we measured the noise characteristics for a small cooling fan used in a computer or in a server, and compared the computational data to measured ones. SC/Tetra V10 and FlowNoise V4.3 was used for the unsteady flow field and the aeroacoustic analysis, respectively. The aeroacoustic analysis results have the good agreement with measured data within 3% errors in overall SPL. In the noise spectrum, we could find the peak tonal noise at lower frequency than 1st BPF, and confirm that the reason is caused by the asymmetry of bell mouth shape.

  • A new method to calculate the aeroacoustic pressure of a centrifugal fan was developed The fan consists of an impeller, diffuser and circular casing. Due to the high rotating velocity and the small gap between the impeller and diffuser, the centrifugal fan makes very high noise level at BPF and its harmonic frequencies. The aeroacoustic pressure is calculated acoustic analogy In this paper, only dipole term is considered in the equation. The acoustics generated by moving impeller and stationary diffuser is calculated separately. The unsteady flow field data is calculated by the vortex method The predicted acoustic pressure agrees very well to the measured data. The difference of the two is smaller than 3dBA.

  • A design method of Sirocco fan is developed for constructing 3-D impeller and scroll geometries, and for predicting both the aerodynamic performance and the noise characteristics of the designed fan. The aerodynamic blading design of fan is conducted by blade angle, camber line determinations and airfoil thickness distribution, and then the scroll geometry of fan is designed by using logarithmic spiral. The aerodynamic performance of designed fan is predicted by the meanline analysis with flow blockage, slip and pressure loss correlations. Based on the predicted performance data, fan noise is predicted by two models for cutoff frequency and broadband noise sources. The present predictions for the performance and the noise level of actual fans are well agreed with measurement results.

  • The aeroacoustic characteristics of a centrifugal fan for a vacuum cleaner and its noise reduction method are studied in this paper. The major noise source of a vacuum cleaner is the centrifugal fan. The impeller of the fan rotates at over 30000 rpm, and generates very high-level noise. It was revealed that the dominant noise source is the aerodynamic interaction between the rotating impeller and stationary diffuser. The directivity of acoustic pressure showed that most of the noise propagates backward direction of the fan-motor assembly. In order to reduce the high tonal sound generated from the aerodynamic interaction, unevenly pitched impeller and diffuser, and tapered impeller designs were proposed and experiments were performed. Uneven pitch design of the impeller changes the sound quality while the overall sound power level (SPL) and the performance remains similar. The effect of the tapered design of impeller was evaluated. The trailing edge of the tapered fan is inclined. This reduces the flow interaction between the rotating impeller and the stationary diffuser because of some phase shifts. The static efficiency of the new impeller design is slightly lower than the previous design. However, the overall SPL is reduced by about 4 dB(A). The SPL of the fundamental blade passing frequency (BPF) is reduced by about 6 dB (A) and the 2$\^$nd/ BPF is reduced about 20 dB (A). The vacuum cleaner with the tapered impeller design produces lower noise level than the previous one, and the strong tonal sound was dramatically reduced.

  • The cross-flow fan performance and its sound noise characteristics are predicted by computational methods. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in moving coordinates are solved by a SMAC method on unstructured triangular meshes, using a sliding mesh technique at the interface between the domain rotating with blades and the rest stationary part. The computationally predicted fan performance was favorably compared with experiment, and some numerical aspects of simulating the cross-flow fan are discussed. With the computed unsteady flow field, aeroacoustic sound noise of the fan is predicted by the Lighthill-Curie equation. The unsteady surface pressure fluctuations on stabilizer enables a prediction of BPF noise of the uniform pitch blade fan quite accurately. The aeroacoustic sound noise characteristics of both uniform and random pitch blade fans are also examined by SPL spectrum analysis.

  • The unsteady flow structure and the related noise generation, which are caused by the separation of a two-dimensional, incompressible, laminar boundary-layer on the flat plate under the influence of local adverse pressure gradient, are numerically examined. The characteristic lines of the wall pressure are examined to understand the unsteady behavior of vortex shedding near the reattachment point of the separation bubble. Also, the generation and propagation of the vortex-induced noise in the separated boundary-layer are calculated by the method of computational aero-acoustics (CAA), and the effects of Reynolds number, Mach number and the strength of the adverse pressure gradient on the unsteady flow and noise characteristics are examined.

  • The vacuum cleaner that has no dust bag generates very high level annoying noise. The dominant noise source is the 2$\^$nd/ BPF tone of the rotating impeller. In order to reduce the noise, we identify the acoustic characteristics and reduce the noise of the vacuum cleaner and centrifugal fan. The resonance phenomenon is observed in blade passages and we found out that the resonance frequency is very close to the 2$\^$nd/ BPF. In order to reduce this high-level peak noise, new impeller is designed in this paper. The trailing edge of new impeller is inclined and this makes the flow interactions between the rotating impeller and the stationary diffuser vane occurs with some phase shift. The performance of new impeller is similar to the old one but the overall SPL is reduced about 3.6dBA. The SPL of BPF is reduced about 6dBA and 2$\^$nd/ BPF is reduced about 20dBA. The vacuum cleaner, which uses newly developed centrifugal fan, generate more comfortable noise than the old model and the strong tonal sound was dramatically reduced.

  • In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been developed and studied for various applications, including drone deliveries, broadcasting, scouting, crop dusting, and firefighting. To enable the wide use of UAVs, their exact aeroacoustic characteristics must be assessed. In this study, a noise prediction method for a ducted fan UAV with complicated geometry was developed. In general, calculation efficiency is increased by simulating a ducted fan UAV without the struts that fix the fuselage to the ducts. However, numerical predictions of noise and aerodynamics differ according to whether struts are present. In terms of aerodynamic performance, the total thrust with and without struts is similar owing to the tendency of the thrust of a blade to offset the drag of the struts. However, in aeroacoustic simulations, the strut effect should be considered in order to predict the UAV's noise because noise from the blades can be changed by the strut effect. Modelling of the strut effect revealed that the dominant tonal noises were closely correlated with the blade passage frequency of the experimental results. Based on the successful detection of noise sources from a ducted fan UAV system, using the proposed noise contribution contour, methods for noise reduction can be suggested by comparing numerical results with measured noise profiles.

  • Sirocco fans are widely used in HVAC and air conditioning systems, and the noise generated by these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the sirocco fan noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and broadband noise. However, only a few researches have been carried out on predicting the aeroacoustic noise because of the difficulty in obtaining detailed information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a sirocco fan. We assume that the impeller rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the impeller is incompressible and inviscid. So, a discrete vortex method (DVM) is used to model the centrifugal fan and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson\`s method is used to predict the acoustic source. Reasonable results are obtained not only fur the tonal noise but also far the amplitudes of the broadband noise. Acoustic pressure is proportional to (Ω)2.3, which is the similar value with the measured data.

  • The paper deals with the computational approach in analysis and design of pantograph panhead strips of high-speed railway in aerodynamic and aeroacoustic concerns. Pantograph is an equipment such that the electric power is supplied from catenary system to train. Due to the nature of complexity in high-speed fluid flow, turbulence and downstream vortices result in the instability in the aerodynamic contact between panhead strips and catenary system, and consequently generate the considerable levels of flow-induced sound. In this paper, based on the preceding low speed wind-tunnel test and simulations, the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics in low speed are analyzed.
