A portion of the veterinary antibiotics administrated to livestock are generally excreted via feces and urine. Tetracyclines and tylosin have a greater priority of environmental risk in Korea based on the consumption and the potential to reach soil and water environment. The antibiotics in animal byproducts need to be reduced or eliminated before they are applied to agricultural lands through composting or other agricultural practices. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of aeration on degradation of antibiotics during storage of swine slurry. Two antibiotics, tetracycline (TC) and tylosin (TYL), were detected from the swine slurry used in the study. One hour aeration per day for 62 days reduced TC concentration from 199 to $43ng\;L^{-1}$ compared with $104ng\;L^{-1}$ without aeration. Aeration for three and six hours decreased TC level to 30 and $23ng\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The dissipation of TC was fitted with a first-order kinetic model. Aeration for 1, 3, and 6 hours every day increased the first-order rate constant, k, from $0.011day^{-1}$ under anaerobic condition to 0.022, 0.026, and $0.037day^{-1}$, respectively. For TYL, aeration during storage of swine slurry enhanced k from $0.0074day^{-1}$ to 0.014, 0.018, and $0.031day^{-1}$ for 1, 3, and 6 hours per day, respectively. For liquid swine slurry, biotic processes can be more effective for dissipation of antibiotics than abiotic processes because of low organic matter and high water content. These results suggest that aeration can increase the degradation rate of antibiotics during storage of swine slurry.
Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of waste cooking oil (WCO) addition on ammonia (NH3) emissions during the composting of dairy cattle manure under two aeration conditions. Methods: The composting tests were conducted using the laboratory-scale composting apparatuses (14 L of inner volume). Three composting treatments (Control, WCO1.5, and WCO3, with WCO added at 0 wt%, 1.5 wt%, and 3 wt% of manure, respectively) were performed in two composting tests: aeration rate during composting was changed from 0.55 to 0.45 L/min in Test 1, and fixed at 0.3 L/min in Test 2, respectively. The NH3 emitted and nitrogen losses during the composting were analyzed, and the effect of the addition of WCO on NH3 emissions were evaluated. Results: Both tests indicated that the composting mixture temperature increased while the weight and water content decreased with increasing WCO content of the composting mixtures. On the other hand, the NH3 emissions and nitrogen loss trends observed during composting in Tests 1 and 2 were different from each other. In Test 1, NH3 emissions and nitrogen losses during composting increased with increasing WCO contents of the composting samples. Conversely, in Test 2, they decreased as the WCO contents of the samples increased. Conclusion: The WCO addition showed different effect on NH3 emissions during composting under two aeration conditions: the increase in WCO addition ratio increased the emissions under the higher aeration rate in Test 1, and it decreased the emissions under the lower aeration rate in Test 2. To obtain reduction of NH3 emissions by adding WCO with the addition ratio ≤3 wt% of the manure, aeration should be considered.

The objective of this paper was to simulate the effect of intermittent forced aeration on cooling rate of stored paddy. Two-dimensional mathematical models were used to predict temperature in a paddy storage bin subjected to intermittent forced aeration.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nitrification characteristics of biological aerated filter (BAF) packed with ceramic media, especially focusing on nitrite build-up during nitrification. When increasing the nitrogen load above $1.63kgNH_4{^+}-N/m^3{\cdot}d$, ammonium removal efficiency decreased to less than 60% and the nitrite ratio ($NO_2{^-}-N/NO_x-N$) of higher than 75% was achieved due to the inhibitory free ammonia (FA, $NH_3-N$) concentration and oxygen limitation. FA inhibition, however, is not recommended strategy to promote nitrite build-up since FA concentration in the reactor is coupled with decreased ammonium removal efficiency. Nitrite ratio in the effluent was also affected by aeration rate and influent ammonium concentration. Ammonium oxidation was enhanced at a higher aeration rate regardless of influent ammonium concentration but, the nitrite ratio was dependent on both aeration rate and influent ammonium concentration. While a higher nitrite ratio was obtained when BAFs were fed with $50mgNH_4{^+}-N/L$ of influent, the nitrite ratio significantly decreased for a greater influent concentration of $200-300mgNH_4{^+}-N/L$. Taken together, aeration rate, influent ammonium concentration and FA concentrations kept in the BAF were found to be critical variables for nitrite accumulation in the BAF system.
Specific growth rate and removal rate of nitrogen and phosphorus of Chlorella sorokiniana, Chlorella vulgaris, Senedesmus dimorphus those are able to metabolite mixotrophically and have high nitrogen and phosphorus removal capacity were examined. Based on the results, one microalgae was selected and conducted experiments to identify the operating factors such as pH and aeration rate. The specific growth rate and phosphorus removal rate of C. sorokiniana significantly presented as $0.29day^{-1}$ and 1.65 mg-P/L/day, while the nitrogen removal rate was high as 12.7 mg-N/L with C. vulgaris. C. sorokiniana was chosen for appropriate microalgae to applying for wastewater treatment system and was cultured in pH ranged 3 to 11. High specific growth rate and removal rate of nitrogen and phosphorus were shown at pH 7 as $0.71day^{-1}$, 7.61 mg-N/L/day, and 1.24 mg-P/L/day, respectively. The specific growth rate examined with aeration rate between 0 and 2 vvm (vol/vol-min) highly presented as $1.2day^{-1}$ with 1.5 ~ 2 vvm, while the nitrogen removal rate was elevated with 0.5 vvm as 9.43 mg-N/L/day.
A bench-scale submerged-type membrane filtration system (SMFS) was constructed to study a feasibility of membrane filtration for solid-liquid separation in water and wastewater treatment processes. In the case of applying the SMFS to a biological wastewater treatment process, so-called membrane bioreactor, aeration underneath membrane modules is usually employed in order to provide oxygen demand for microbial growth as well as to control membrane fouling. A study was investigated the effects of operation parameters by aeration intensity, feed concentration, foulant type and airlift pore size on critical flux. Critical flux tends to increase with aeration rate. Optimal aeration flow rate was found to be 10 L/min/module. Feed concentration and foulant type has a significant effect on membrane fouling and filtration performance. But downward position and pore size of airlift has no a significant effects on membrane fouling and filtration performance.

To construct the system controlling the aeration volume for D wastewater treatment plant effectively, the fluctuation of aeration volume was analyzed with changes of factors of the influent. As a result, the range of aeration volume was wide to maintain the certain concentration of DO, and the key factor to decide the aeration volume was found to be the temperature, F/M ratio, the loading rate of $BOD_5$ and T-N of the influent. Among the factors, the temperature of the influent had the most decisive effect on the aeration volume. The result showed that $45.8m^3/h$ of the aeration volume was needed with an increase of $1^{\circ}C$ of the influent, and the effect of the season was considered. Since the temperature of the influent is affected by a change of season, same as F/M ratio, the loading rate of the influent and the concentration of MLSS, it seemed that the change of the temperature of the influent affects the aeration volume even more. Therefore, it is preferable to consider the loading rate of the influent and F/M ratio altogether, rather than considering only one factor when deciding aeration volume.
The temperature effect at $20^{\circ}$ and $10^{\circ}$ on the nutrient removal efficiency was evaluated in the combined biological nutrient removal system (CBNR) with anaerobic-intermittent aerobic-oxic reactors. The test was conducted under the conditions of various ratios of intermittent aeration time and distribution of influent raw water to CBNR. The removal efficiencies of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus were a little bit better at $20^{\circ}$ than at $10^{\circ}$. However the large difference of temperature effect on the nutrient removal efficiency between $20^{\circ}$ and $10^{\circ}$ was not appeared because of highly sustained MLSS concentrations in the reactors and controlled intermittent aeration time. In the removal of phosphorus, Mode III (50/70 min in aeration on/off time, 3 times of intermittent aeration) showed more effective compared with short aeration time of Mode IV. In case of N, P removal, the denitrification rate was lower in Mode A with splitted inflow into anaerobic and intermittent aeration basins than in Mode B with sole inflow into anaerobic basin.
Airlift pumps were tested to evaluate their pumping and aeration capacities. The pumps were 34.5 inch long made of 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch nominal diameter PVC pipes. An one hp air blower was used to supply the air. The air-flow rate was measured by an anemometer type air-flow meter and air pressure was level changes in a water tank from which water was pumped. Aeration by the pumps was tested by the standard aeration test method with the center of pump outlet positioned 3 inches above water surface. Oxygen concentrations in water were measured to determine aeration rate. As pumping head increased by water level draw-down in the tank water flow decreased while air flow increased. The reduction rate of water flow was higher with 4 and 6-inch pumps. Small pumps showed very minor changes in the reduction. Aeration rates were similar among 3, 4, and 6 inch pumps. With one hp air blower 6-inch pump at the minimum pumping head achieved the best performance in terms of water circulation.

Diffused Aeration System (DAS) is one of the remediation methods used for removing contaminants in groundwater and this method brings air bubbles in contact with contaminated water, afterwards transferring contaminants in liquid phase into air phase. In this study, three applicability tests using DAS were conducted in two highly contaminated sites. For these tests, diffused air bubbles are generated with a in-flow rate of 17.1, 44.8 and 76.5 (1/min), respectively. The concentrations of TCE in grounwater and air phase were measured during the tests. The measured results showed that TCE concentration hit the highest value after 6~8 min and afterwards decreased gradually. Also, it was observed that the TCE concentration in air phase changed depending on the rate of diffused aeration. In addition, $K_La$ values from liquid to air phase were calculated based on the test results and those of three tests (test 1, 2 3) were 0.444, 1.158 and 1.836(1/hr), respectively. From the comparison of $K_La$ values, the faster air in-flow rate is, the higher the efficiency of the DAS is.
