  • The objective of this study is to review the basic theories related substrate removal in wastewater flow variations using submerged biofilm reactor. An aerated biofilm reactor is that in which influent organic substrates are aerobically oxidized by the microorganisms of biofilm grown on the surface of submerged media. No sludge is returned, and oxygen is supplied by diffusers. Three types of aerated biofilm reactor are one stage-central aeration, one stageup flow aeration and two stage-side aeration. The orders of substrate removal capacity in wastewater flow variations showed two stage-side aeration, one stage-upflow aeration and one stage-central aeration. The phenonmenon of nonclosing volid in upflow aeration type was superior to these in central-side aeration type. Attached biofilm masses in case of upflow, side and central aeration reactor were 1.0mg/cm$^2$, 4.1 mg/cm$^2$ and 0.93 mg/cm$^2$, respectively. Yield coefficient for biofilm was 0.31 to 0.48. Especially, removal efficiency can be increased remarkably according to the number of biofilm reactor and the packed condition of media.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR) on microbial characteristics and treatment efficiency in sewage treatment using aerated submerged biological filter (ASBF) reactor. This reactor combines biodegradation of organic substrates by fixed biomass with a physical separation of biomass by filtration in a single reactor. Both simulated wastewater and domestic wastewater were used as feed solutions. The experimental conditions were a temperature of 17 to $27^{\circ}C$, a hydraulic retention time of 1 to 9hr, an organic loading rate of 0.47 to $3.84kg\;BOD/m^3{\cdot}day$ in ASBF reactor. This equipment could obtain a stable effluent quality in spite of high variation of influent loading rate. Total biomass concentration. biofilm thickness and biofilm mass increased an exponential function according to the increasing OLR. The relationships between water content and biofilm density were in inverse proportion. The percentage of backwash water to influent flow was almost 9%. The separation efficiency of biomass was the percentage of 91 to 92 in ASBF reactor. The sludge production rates in feed solutions of simulated wastewater and domestic wastewater were 0.14~0.26 kg VSS/kg BODrem, 0.43~0.48 kg VSS/kg BODrem, respectively.

  • Net type polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) media and cillium type polyethlene polypropylene (PEPP) media were installed in the aereted submerged biofilm reactors. Synthetic phenol wastewater for feed were made to contain 1,480 mg of phenol per liter of water. The organic loading range of reactors were 0.439-0.456 kg COD/m$_{3}$, 0.882 - 0.919 kg COD/m$_{3}$ and 1.199-1.339 kg COD/m$_{3}$. Comparing PVDC to PEPP media, the bacterial number found in biofilm on PEPP were slightly higher. With the low temperature (10$\circ$C), the number of bacteria was some what deceered. Number of bacterial strains identified from PVDC were 23 and those from PEPP were 42. Genera identified in the PVDC media were Flavobacterium (47.8%), Unidentified (17.6%), Pseudomonas (13.0%), Micrococcus (8.7%) and Beggratoa (8.7%). Genera identified in the PEPP media reactor were Pseudomonas (35.7%), Alcaligenes (19.0%), Aeromonas (14.33%) and Micrococcus (11.9%), In the steady, state, a filamentous bacteria, type 1701 was identified in all of the reactors. Paramecium sp. and fungi were present in the PVDC media reactor. While, Difflugia sp, Paramecium sp. and fungi were found in the PEPP media reactor. The low diversity of protozoa was ascribed to high concentration of phenol.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate biodegradation of TPA(terephthalic acid) and EG (ethylene glycol), treatment efficiency of polyester weight loss wastewater and microbial characteristics by aerated submerged biolfilm(ASB) p.rocess. In a batch reactor, pH increased from 7.0 to 8. 5 in the biodegradation of TPA. Whereas, in case of EG, decreased from 7.0 to 5.2. COD concentration rapidly decreased within 24hr in the biodegradation of TPA and EG. COD removal velocity constant(k) were 0.065-0.088 hr$^{-1}$. The biodegradation velocity of TPA was 1.4 times faster than that of EG. The ratio of suspended biomass to the total biomass in the reactor was 18.3-33.3%, increased as a high ratio of EG content. Biofilm thickness, biofilm dry density and attached biomass were 346-432 $\mu$m, 41.8-61.9 mg/cm$^3$, 1.45-2.67 mg/cm$^2$, respectively. There values increased as a high ratio of TPA content. In the hydraulic retention time of 36 hr, organic loading rate of 4 kgCOD/m$^3\cdot$ day and packing ratio of 70%, the effluent concentrations of TCOD, SCOD in a continuous flow reator were 1,388 mg/l, 147 mg/l and removal efficiencies were 77%, 97.6%, respectively.

  • An aerated submerged biofilm reactor is the reactor in which influent organic substrates are aerobically oxidized by suspended biomass and attached biomass of biofilm grown on the surface of submerged media. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of aeration intensity on microbial characteristics and treatment efficiency in submerged biofilm process. In the organic loading rate (4.3kg BOD/$m^{3} \cdot day$), biofilm thickness (420-780$\mu$m) and attached biomass(1.79-2.94mg/cm$^{2}$) increased as the aeration intensity increased (2-8m$^{3}$ air/$m^{2} \cdot hr$), but biofilm density decreased (42.25-37.69mg/cm$^{3}$). The minimum aeration intensity for prevention of deposited biomass was 2m$^{3}$ air/$m^{2} \cdot hr$. The minimum dissolved oxygen of 2.5mg/l had to be maintained for improved efficiency.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature on microbial characteristics and treatment efficiency in aerated submerged biofilm process. From the results of the research, conclusions were derived as following: 1. Biofilm density, attached biomass and biofilm thickness were $30-42mg/cm^3$, $1.2-2.7mg/cm^2$ and $380-690{\mu}m$, respectively. These were greatly affected by the variation of temperature ($5-20^{\circ}C$) and packing ratio(45-90%). 2. The ratio of suspended biomass to the total biomass in the reactor was in the range of 10 to 50 % in accordance with the variation of temperature and packing ratio. Therefore, the portion of suspended biomass cannot be neglected. 3. BOD removal efficiency increased as either temperature or biomass(suspended and attached) concentration increased. 4. The aerated submerged biofilm process appeared to be less affected by temperature variation and the estimated temperature correction coefficient of the Van't Hoff-Arrhenenius equation was 1.042.

  • This research was performed to examined the applicability of a fixed-biofilm process for the wastewater treatment of military installations. Utilizing plastic net media, synthetic wastewater-average $BOD_5$ cocentration was $192mg/l$ treated in the three sets of reactors that have 8 hours, 6 hours, and 4 hours of hydraulic retention time. The results of this experiment showed that the biofilm was not detached easily, and the reactor was not closed by excess biomass. The average soluble $BOD_5$ concentrations of effluent were $6.0mg/l$ with 8 hours of retention time, $11.3mg/l$ with 6 hours of retention time, and $19.4mg/l$ with 4 hours of retention time. Especially it was reduced to $5.7mg/l$ in the second stage reactor with 4 hours of retention time. These resulted that the fixed-biofilm process could be adapted for the treatment of military installation wastewater.

  • Submerged filter process was used to evaluate the nitrifying efficiency of ammonia in the recycling water of marine aquatic culture system. The ammonia removal efficiency was achieved as high as $99\%$ at the hydraulic surface loading rate of up to $4.3{\ell}/m^2-day$. And the nitrite accumulation did not occur in the reactor even when the hydraulic surface loading rate of up to $36.8{\ell}/m^2day$ was applied. In the present study, the relationship between the effluent ammonia concentration and ammonia surface loading rate was formulated as an equation. The attachment rate of biofilm on the filter media at the ammonia surface loading rate of 62.3 and $311.7mg/m^2day$ was 15 and $55mg/m^2-day$, respectively, showing the linear relationship between the attachment rate and ammonia loading rates. Biofilm thickness and density of the filter media were found to be the function of the ammonia loading rate.
