  • We researched in the optimization of unit process and the stabilization of discharged water quality through the treatment of the occurrence of wastewater classified by place of production which has high COD load and non degradable COD load in paper industry. As the result, using polymer, inorganic flocculants and alum at the same time is effective to advance the COD value through the colloid material removal with SS in the first treatment process. Moreover, it is determined to keep optimum of $FeCl_2/H_2O_2$ in the concentration of 1000 ppm in the ratio of 1/1. Because It is confirmed that to input excess chemicals using Fenton oxidation method gives adverse effect to water quality.

  • Biological Activated Carbon (BAC) process is widely used for the advanced water treatment, but it's mechanisms have not been well understood, especially the relationship between biodegradation and carbon adsorption. Also the phenomenon of bioregeneration has been confused that previously occupied adsorption sites appear to be made available through the actions of microorganisms. Therefore, the objectives of this study examines closely the mechanism of bioregeneration by temperature variation, especially low temperature.

  • Adsorption and leaching characteristics of the artificial soils produced from water and wastewater treatment sludges were examined. The batch adsorption test and TCLP leaching test were used, and constituents of interest were heavy metals and nutrients. As, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Cd were analyzed for metals, and nitrogen and phosphorus were analyzed for nutrients. All the artificial soils showed strong adsorption and low leaching for the heavy metals, which implies that the artificial soils may not be hazardous to the environment due to heavy metals and even they can be utilized effectively to remove metals in solution like mine and industrial wastewaters. This is quite promising result because in most case heavy metals are the most concern in the application of sludge product to the farmland. For the nutrients, generally, artificial soils showed high adsorption and low leaching except artificial soil from wastewater sludge produced by low temperature firing. The artificial soils produced from water treatment sludge were active in adsorbing nutrients and showed low leaching that they can be practically used to remove nutrients in advanced treatment process of the wastewater. The artificial soils produced from wastewater treatment sludge were less active in adsorbing nutrients and showed high teaching. However, they could be used usefully if applied properly to the plant growing because of their fertilizing effect. Based on the test results, overall, the artificial soils were thought to be not hazardous to the environment and they could be more useful if applied properly.

  • Rapid industrialization and a significant population growth has led to an increased use of chemicals, which has limited the biological processes that account for most of the existing water and wastewater treatment methods. Ozone microbubble technology, which is one of advanced oxidation processes, has recently attracted attention as a method to solve these issues. In this paper, we reviewed both the physical and the chemical characteristics of microbubbles, and evaluated microbubble-based ozone oxidation processes focusing on the removal of various toxic contaminants. In addition, we discussed the potential of an ozone microbubble process as water and wastewater treatment processes by combining it with other treatment technologies.

  • The MBR technology has evolved rapidly over the past two decades with significant gains in performance and reliability, and reductions in costs. Membrane bioreactors (MBR) technology is widely recognised as offering a key option for enhanced wastewater treatment or reuse. The objective of this paper is then to critically review the remarkable achievement on the research and commercial applications of membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology and to present current and potential MBR markets on a global scope. This brief review of the technology incorporates five key aspects : 1) evolution of MBR practice, 2) the commercial technologies of MBRs, 3) the largest MBR installations globally (e.g. > $10,000m^3/day$), 4) MBR market growth, and 5) directions for future research. Finally, the development directions of economical, environmental and technical aspects in MBRs; 1) investment costs; 2) effluent water quality; 3) membrane materials and modules; 4) MBR equipment and treatment process; 5) operating costs (higher energy & chemical consumption); and 6) sustainability such as anaerobic MBRs in the coming years were addressed.

  • This study aims at an assessment of the effectiveness of taste & odor removal and transmembrane pressure changes in a pilot membrane plant(500m3/day) by adding PAC to MF process, and at providing a basis for applying it to the advanced water treatment process. The transmembrane pressure showed, in low turbidity of raw water, a tendency to decrease when PAC was injected at the Flux of 1, $1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$, while it increased in high Flux($1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$) in high turbidity of raw water. in addtion, it is shown that the fouling could be reduced more when PAC is injected together with appropriate amount of coagulant, than when PAC is solely injected. Taste & Odor-causing 2-MIB may not be detected in membrane filtered water, if the amount of PAC injection is increased in accordance with the increasing concentration of 2-MIB. Hence, PAC injection, as a pre-treatment process in MF membrane filtering, is supposed to be a suitable process for reducing fouling as well as for improvement effectiveness of taste & odor treatment.

  • Submerged membrane bioreactor(SMBR) and reverse osmosis(R/O) systems treated dye wastewater for reusing of industrial water. The permeate fluxes of SMBR at 20-25 cmHg of lab. test and field test were 10 LMH($1/m^2$.hr) all test. Removal efficiencies of CODcr, $COD_{Mn}$ and T-N were 93%, 90% and 60% in the SMBR, respectively The advanced treatment of combined process(SMBR+R/0) was accomplished for increasing the removal efficiency of non-biodegradable materials and T-N. Therefore, the removal efficiency of T-N obtained in 80% above, then nitrogen concentration was under 15 mg/L. The combined process(SMBR+R/0) was suitable to reuse of the dye wastewater.

  • In this study, a newly developed agitator with hydrofoil impeller applied to actual biological process in advanced wastewater treatment plant was evaluated. Several series of experiments were conducted in two different wastewater treatment plants where actual problems have been occurred such as the production of scums and sludge settling. For more effective evaluation, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and measurements of MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids) and DO (Dissolved Oxygen) were used with other measuring equipments. After the installation of one unit of vertical hydrofoil agitator in plant A, scum and sludge settling problems were solved and more than seventy percent of operational energy was saved. In case of plant B, there were three cells of each anoxic and anaerobic tanks, and each cell had one unit of submersible horizontal agitator. After the integration of three cells to one cell in each tank, and installation of one vertical hydrofoil agitator per tank, all the problems caused by improper mixing were solved and more than eighty percent of operational energy was found to be saved. Simple change of agitator applied to biological process in wastewater treatment plant was proved to be essential to eliminate scum and sludge settling problems and to save input energy.

  • This paper describes characteristics of pollutants in wastewater from the pulp and paper industry and biological technologies for the wastewater treatment. The wastewater from the pulp and paper industry contains high concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) and shows high toxicity and strong black-brown color. In particular, organic chlorinated compounds such as dioxins and furans may be formed by the chlorination of lignin in wood chips. Thus the pulp and paper industry is recently trending toward total chlorine-free (TCF) bleaching processes. All biological technologies for pulp and paper wastewater treatment are based on the contact between wastewater and bacteria, which feed on organic materials in the wastewater, thus they reduce BOD concentration in it. Both aerobic and anaerobic treatments were found to be effective for the wastewater treatment. Furthermore, advanced technologies such as fungal application and combined biological-filtration process have been also introduced to the wastewater treatment field. These technologies would be useful for water recycling to reduce water consumption throughout pulp and paper making process.

  • The purpose of this study is to remove the organics, nitrogen and phosphorus using biosorption for the domestic sewage. The new process using biosorption is based on the methods of contact-stabilization, which remove the organics by absorbing them to the surface of the microorganism in the activated sludge. This process consists of biosorption reactor, biosorption clarifier, nitrifying reactor, nitrifying clarifier, denitrifying reactor, phosphorus uptake(polishing) reactor and final clarifier. The efficiency of removal could be reached 91% for organics, 76% for nitrogen, 90% for phosphorus in Eujungbu pilot plant. We operated the plant which irrigated $10m^3$ per day for sewage. During our operation the HRT(Hydraulic Retention time) was maintained for 10.5hr, but it could be reduced as 8.5hr according to our operation results.
