In this paper, we propose an efficient method to broadcast digital television signals using single frequency networks (SFNs) within the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) transmission systems. In implementing the SFNs of an 8-vestigial side band (8-VSB) Digital Television (DTV) system, the ambiguity problem of the trellis coder is unavoidable in a conventional ATSC transmission system. We propose a memory initialization of the trellis coder to resolve this ambiguity problem. Since the proposed scheme to synchronize multiple transmitters minimizes the changes from the conventional ATSC system, the hardware complexity for these changes is very low. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme makes a less than 0.1 dB degradation at the threshold of visibility with a bit error rate of $3{\times}10^{-6}$ in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. It is possible to reduce the performance degradation by increasing the initialization period of the proposed scheme.

This work proposes suitable network configurations for single frequency networks (SFNs) with ATSC 1.0 based on network coverage calculations and the laboratory multipath handling performance of commercial receivers. SFNs are widely used for delivering terrestrial digital television services because of their efficient use of the spectrum. In Mexico the analogue television transmissions switch-off occurred on 31 December 2016. Thus it is expected the adopted ATSC 1.0 system will be in force for the next several years despite the recent standardization of the ATSC 3.0 system. As ATSC 1.0 uses 8-VSB modulation the multipath handling capability of receivers is critical for the design of SFNs. The presented network planning results help develop technical normativity for implementing SFNs in Mexico and other countries that use ATSC 1.0. SFNs with transmitter separation up to 130 km are fully covered for outdoor reception mainly due to the directivity of the receiving antenna. Moreover for indoor reception at least 70% of an SFN coverage area can be achieved with a transmitter separation of up to 60 km depending on the radiated power and the transmitter antenna height.

Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) produced ATSC 2.0 standard, which has been used for a HD/SD digital broadcasting service with MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) as a delivery protocol. Recently, users might want to consume multimedia services without being constrained by transport network. However, MPEG-2 TS is not suitable protocol for IP network. Thus, ATSC has enacted ATSC 3.0 standard, which is designed for a hybrid service through a conversion of both broadcasting and broadband channels. The ATSC 3.0 specifies delivery protocols as MPEG Media Transport (MMT) for a broadcasting environment and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) for a broadband. However, it seems difficult to combine broadcast and broadband for hybrid broadcasting, and it is difficult to synchronize media data between MMT and DASH. This paper suggests various new service scenarios to be brought up by a hybrid broadcasting, ATSC 3.0, and also proposes a stable mechanism for switching contents between different delivery protocols such as MMT and DASH.

In ATSC 3.0 systems, a bootstrap signal is located at the start of each frame. In this paper, we propose an initial synchronization scheme for ATSC 3.0 systems using the bootstrap signal. The bootstrap signal of ATSC 3.0 has several repetition patterns in the time domain. By utilizing the repetition patterns within the bootstrap, the proposed scheme can obtain an initial synchronization at the receiver. Also, simulation results show that the proposed scheme can obtain an initial synchronization at very low signal-to-noise ratios.
Despite the successful launch of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 broadcasting worldwide, broadcasters are facing obstacles in constructing void-less large-scale single-frequency networks (SFNs). The bottleneck is the absence of decent on-channel repeater (OCR) solutions necessary for SFNs. In the real world, OCRs suffer from the maleficent feedback interference (FI) problem, which overwhelms the desired input signal. Moreover, the undesired multipaths between studio-linked transmitters and the OCR deteriorate the forward signals' quality as well. These problems crucially restrict the feasibility of conventional OCR systems, arousing the strong need for cost-worthy advanced OCR solutions. This paper presents an ATSC 3.0-specific solution of advanced OCR that solves the FI problem and refines the input signal. To this end, the FI canceler and channel equalizer functionalities are carefully implemented into the OCR system. The presented OCR system is designed to be fully compliant with the ATSC 3.0 specifications and performs a fast and efficient signal processing by exploiting the specific frame structure. The real product of ATSC 3.0 OCR is fabricated as well, and its feasibility is verified via field and laboratory experiments. The implemented solution is installed at a commercial on-air site and shown to provide substantial coverage gain in practice.

This paper provides performance evaluations of various channel estimation schemes for Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system under a fixed reception environment. ATSC 3.0 MIMO system can obtain high spectral efficiency and improved reception performance compared to conventional terrestrial broadcasting systems. The ATSC 3.0 MIMO defines Walsh-Hadamard and null pilot encoding algorithms and the amplitude and phase of MIMO pilots are different from those of single-input single-output pilots. At the receiver, linear and discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based interpolations can be used for the channel estimation. This paper provides the various combinations of the interpolation schemes for channel estimation in time and frequency dimensions, and then analyzes the performance of the various combinations through the computer simulation. The results of computer simulation show that the combination of the linear interpolation in the time dimension and then DFT-based interpolation in the frequency dimension can obtain the best performance among the considered combinations.

Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) has attracted much attention as one of next generation broadcasting services. For the commercialization of UHD broadcasting service, standardization groups including the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) and the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) have decided to adopt the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) for signal transmission. However, when the carrier frequency is not properly synchronized at the receiver, inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) may occur. In order to avoid performance degradation resulting from ISI or ICI, receivers should synchronize the carrier frequency by using preambles and pilot symbols. However, there only few published literature dealing with the frequency offset estimation methods regarding the next generation terrestrial broadcasting. In this respect, this paper proposes a method to estimate timing and fractional frequency offset for the ATSC 3.0 system by using a preamble bootstrap symbol. The proposed detector can detect the fractional frequency offset by adding a complex conjugate product on the conventional estimator where only timing offset can be estimated.

This paper analyzes the feasibility of a new 3DTV broadcasting service scenario via Advanced Television Systems Committee Mobile/Handheld (ATSC-M/H). We suggest a dual-channel system in which a left-view image is encoded by MPEG-2 with HD quality and a small-sized right-view image is encoded by AVC. Also, the left view is transmitted through ATSC main channel and the right view is transmitted through ATSC-M/H channel. Although the transport stream formats of two channels are different from each other, we demonstrate that it is possible for the ATSC 2.0 decoder to synchronize the display of the left and right views when both encoders use a common wall clock and time stamp. We also propose a program specific information descriptor which guarantees full compatibility with the conventional 2D HDTV and emerging mobile TV services. Finally, we provide the results of subjective visual quality assessment of the proposed system in support of its 3DTV service quality.
