Wastewater treatment using a hybrid process coupling adsorption on marl and microfiltration

  • Hranfa's marl, a local natural mineral, is selected for the decontamination by adsorption of aqueous effluents in textile industry. Its physicochemical characterization is first performed. It is composed mainly of Calcite, Quartz, Ankerite and Muscovite. Its specific surface area is 40 ㎡ g-1. Its adsorption performance is then tested in batch conditions using an industrial organic dye, Bemacid Red E-TL, as a model pollutant. The measured adsorption capacity of Hranfa's marl is 16 mg g-1 which is comparable to that of other types of natural adsorbents. A hybrid process is tested coupling adsorption of the dye on marl in suspension and microfiltration. An adsorption reactor is inserted into the circulation loop of a microfiltration pilot using ceramic membranes. This makes possible a continuous extraction of the treated water provided that a periodic replacement of the saturated adsorbent is done. The breakthrough curve obtained by analyzing the dye concentration in the permeate is close to the ideal one considering that no dye will cross the membrane as long as the adsorbent load is not saturated. These first experimental data provide proof of concept for such a hybrid process.

  • RPSA 공정은 기체 혼합물을 흡착법을 이용하여 분리하는 주기적인 공정으로 일반적인 방법의 적용이 어려운 기체 혼합물의 분리에 적용될 수 있다. 공기로부터 분리된 산소는 의료용 산소발생기, 생물학적 폐수처리 공정 등에 이용되어 왔으며 다른 공정에의 적용이 점차 확대되고 있다. RPSA 공정은 한 개의 흡착탑을 이용하여 분리하므로 기존의 PSA공정에 비해서 장치의 구성이 간단하다. 본 연구에서는 공기로부터 산소를 농축하는 RPSA 공정의 기초연구를 통하여 산소농축공정 개발을 위한 기초자료와 제반 기술을 확립하고자 한다.

비이온성 수지를 이용한 음이온 계면활성제의 흡착에 관한 연구 (A Study on Adsorption of Anionic Surfactants with Nonionic Resins)

  • The adsorption of the anionic surfactants, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) anion surfactants form aqueous solutions with nonionic resins, Amberlite XAD-2, XAD-4 and XAD-7 at temperatures in 15~45$^{\circ}C$ range was studied. Several adsorption isotherm models were used to fit the experimental data, The best results were obtained with the Redlich-Peterson equation and the Freundlich model provided remarkably good fits. For a particular resin at a particular temperature, SDBS was more extensively adsorbed than SLS. The highest adsorption were obtained with XAD-4 resin and the specific surface area of the resins plays a major role in adsorption of the surfactants. Estimations of the isosteric heat of adsorption were indicative of an exothermic process, and their magnitudes manifested a physisorption process.

생물소재인 땅콩껍질 바이오 차를 이용한 수용액의 Cd(II) 제거 (Adsorption of Cd(II) in Aqueous Solution by Peanut Husk Biochar)

  • The present study set out to investigate the adsorption of Cd(II) ions in an aqueous solution by using Peanut Husk Biochar (PHB). An FT-IR analysis revealed that the PHB contained carboxylic and carbonyl groups, O-H carboxylic acids, and bonded-OH groups, such that it could easily adsorb heavy metals. The adsorption of Cd(II) using PHB proved to be a better fit to the Langmuir isotherm than to the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was 33.89 mg/g for Cd(II). The negative value of ${\Delta}G^o$ confirm that the process whereby Cd(II) is adsorbed onto PHB is feasible and spontaneous in nature. In addition, the value of ${\Delta}G^o$ increase with the temperature, suggesting that a lower temperature is more favorable to the adsorption process. The negative value of ${\Delta}H^o$ indicates that the adsorption phenomenon is exothermic while the negative value of ${\Delta}S^o$ suggests that the process is enthalpy-driven. As an alternative to commercial activated carbon, PHB could be used as a low-cost and environmentally friendly adsorbent for removing Cd(II) from aqueous solutions.

석탄계 활성탄에 의한 수중의 메틸렌블루와 페놀 흡착 특성 (Adsorption Characteristics of Methylene Blue and Phenol from Aqueous Solution using Coal-based Activated Carbon)

  • The efficiency of coal-based activated carbon in removing methylene blue (MB) and phenol from aqueous solution was investigated in batch experiments. The batch adsorption kinetics were described by applying pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and first order reversible reaction. The results showed that the adsorption of MB and phenol occurs complexed process including external mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir isotherm was 461.0 mg/g for MB and 194.6 mg/g for phenol, respectively. The values of activation parameters such as free energy (${\Delta}G^0$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^0$), and entropy (${\Delta}S^0$) were also determined as -19.0~-14.9 kJ/mol, 25.4 kJ/mol, and 135.2 J/mol K for MB and 51.8~54.1 kJ/mol, -29.0 kJ/mol, and -76.4 kJ/mol K for phenol, respectively. The MB adsorption was found to be endothermic and spontaneous process. However, the CV adsorption was found to be exothermic and non-spontaneous process.

Adsorption and electro-Fenton processes over FeZSM-5 nano-zeolite for tetracycline removal from wastewater

  • Adsorption and heterogeneous electro-Fenton process using iron-loaded ZSM-5 nano-zeolite were investigated for the removal of Tetracycline (TC) from wastewater. The nano-zeolite was synthesized hydrothermally and modified through impregnation. The zeolite was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption, and NH3-TPD techniques. The equilibrium data were best represented by the Freundlich isotherm. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the most accurate model for the adsorption of TC on the modified nano-zeolite. The effect of parameters such as pH of solution and current density were investigated for the heterogeneous electro-Fenton process. The results showed that the current density of 150 mA and pH of 3 led to the highest TC removal (90.35%) at 50 min. The nano-zeolite showed the appropriate reusability. Furthermore, the developed kinetic model was in good agreement with the removal data of TC through the electro-Fenton process.

활성탄과 유리섬유를 흡착제로 이용한 아조염료 함유 폐수의 처리 (Adsorption Treatment of Azo Dye Containing Wastewater using Activated Carbon and Glass Fiber as an Adsorbent)

  • Adsorption characteristics of glass fibers, obtained from the spent lithium primary batteries recycling process, were investigated for the removal of Acid Red 27 dye from aqueous solution. The batch data clearly showed that increasing the initial sorptive concentration apparently enhanced the amount adsorbed and the uptake process followed the pseudo-second order rate model. The equilibrium adsorption data at different initial sorptive concentrations were fitted well to Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Moreover, the increase in temperature, favored the uptake of dye on this solid, indicated the process was endothermic in nature. Further, using the temperature dependence sorption data obtained at different temperatures was used to estimate various thermodynamic parameters.

  • 수중에서 일어나는 흡착반응에 대해 고전적 Langmuir 등온흡착식에서 고려되고 있지 않은 흡착제 표면에서의 흡착질과 물분자간의 치환과정을 고려한 수정된 Langmuir 등온흡착식을 제시하였다. 활성탄 표면에 대한 $Cd^{2+}$의 흡착을 대상으로 도출된 수정 등온흡착식을 적용한 결과, 흡착특성의 검토 및 반응양상의 해석에 있어 고전적 Langmuir 등온흡착식에 비해 그 적용성이 향상되는 것으로 파악되었다. 이에 의거하여 Langmuir 모델을 따르는 흡착계에 있어 제시된 수정 등온흡착식을 적용할 경우, 공정의 설계 및 운영과정에서 보다 정밀하고 향상된 결과를 얻을 수 있을 것으로 사료되었다.

Comparative Study on Convective and Microwave-Assisted Heating of Zeolite-Monoethanolamine Adsorbent Impregnation Process for CO2 Adsorption

  • Adsorption is the most promising technology used to adsorb CO2 to reduce its concentration in the atmosphere due to its functional effectiveness. Various porous materials have been extensively synthesized to boost CO2 adsorption efficiency, for example, zeolite. Here, we report the synthesis process of zeolite adsorbent impregnated with amine, combining the benefit of these two substances. We compared conventional heating with microwave-assisted heating by varying concentrations of monoethanolamine in methanol (10% v/v and 40% v/v) as a liquid solution. The results showed that monoethanolamine impregnation helps significantly increase adsorption capacity, where adsorption occurs as a physisorption and not as chemisorption due to the adsorbent's steric hindrance effect. The highest adsorption capacity of 0.3649 mmol CO2 / gram adsorbent was reached by microwave exposure for 10 minutes. This work also reveals that a decrease in CO2 adsorption capacity was observed at a longer exposure period, and it reached a constant 40-minute adsorption rate. Impregnating activated zeolite with 40% monoethanolamine for 10 minutes in addition to microwave exposure (0.8973 mmol CO2 / gram adsorbent) is the maximum adsorption ability achieved.

입상 활성탄에 대한 New Fuchsin 염료흡착의 등온선, 동력학 및 열역학 파라미터에 관한 연구 (Isotherms, Kinetics and Thermodynamic Parameters Studies of New Fuchsin Dye Adsorption on Granular Activated Carbon)

  • 입상활성탄을 사용하여 new fuchsin 염료를 흡착하는데 필요한 흡착등온선과 흡착동역학 및 열역학 파라미터들에 대하여 조사하였다. 흡착평형은 Langmuir 흡착등온식이 가장 잘 맞았으며, 등온흡착평형관계로부터 Langmuir 식과 Freundlich 식의 분리계수를 평가한 결과, 분리계수값이 각각 $R_L$ = 0.023, 1/n=0.198로 입상활성탄에 의한 new fuchsin 염료의 흡착조작이 유효한 처리방법이 될 수 있음을 알았다. Dubinin-Radushkevich 식으로 구한 흡착에너지값(E = 0.002 kJ/mol)과 Temkin 식으로부터 구한 흡착열상수값(B = 1.920 J/mol)으로부터 흡착공정이 물리흡착공정임을 알았다. 흡착공정에 대한 동력학적 해석을 통해 흡착반응은 유사이차반응속도식이 유사일차반응속도식과 비교하여 일치도가 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 입자 내 확산이 흡착공정의 지배단계이었다. 열역학적 해석을 통해 평가된 엔탈피 변화값(92.49 kJ/mol)과 활성화에너지값(11.79 kJ/mol)으로부터 흡착공정이 흡열반응으로 진행되었다. 또한, 엔트로피 변화값이 313.7 J/mol K로 흡착공정의 무질서도가 증가하였다. 온도가 올라갈수록 자유에너지값이 감소하는 것은 활성탄에 대한 new fuchsin 염료의 흡착반응은 온도가 올라갈수록 자발성이 높아지는 것으로 판단되었다.
