  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the association between current suicidal or violent behavior and deficits of specific neurocognitive variables in child and adolescent inpatient samples diagnosed with mood disorder. Methods: A retrospective review of the charts of mood disorder patients hospitalized at Samsung Medical Center between April 2004 and April 2015 was conducted. Child and adolescent patients aged between 10 and 18 years old and those who finished neurocognitive function testing during their hospitalization were included. Among them patients whose full scale IQ was between 85 and 115 were selected (N=111). Participants were first divided into two age-groups-group Y ($10{\leq}age{\leq}15$, N=54) and group O ($16{\leq}age{\leq}18$, N=57)-because neurocognitive function test tools were different according to age [Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) for 10 to 15-year-old patients, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) for 16 to 18-year-old patients]. They were then divided according to their suicidal or violent behavior-non suicidal/violent group (NG), suicidal group (SG), violent group (VG), and both suicidal/violent group (BG). The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was checked for measurement of participants' behavior and the Gordon Diagnostic System was checked for measurement of their attention efficiency. Kruskal-Wallis Test and Tukey test was used to determine the differences in neurocognitive function between groups. Results: O-SG patients showed lower scores on the comprehension subscale of WAIS-III than O-NG patients (${\chi}^2=8.454$, p=.015). O-VG patients showed lower scores on the block design subscales of WAIS than O-SG patients (${\chi}^2=7.496$, p=.024). Y-VG patients showed higher scores in aggressive behavior, externalizing problems, and total problems scores of CBCL. Conclusion: This study showed relationship between specific neurocognitive deficits and suicidal or violent behavior. These relationships were significant in relatively older adolescents.

  • The purpose of our study was to figure out the generation gap between adolescents group and parents group in the sub-dimensions of perceptions on online games, such as harmfulness and benefits of online games, impacts and values of online games, parent-adolescent relationship with regard to online game activities, and government regulation of online games. To this end, we conducted online survey targeting middle or high school students and parents with children attending middle or high school regarding the perceptions on online games. As a result, we identified the similarities and differences between adolescents and parents generation in the sub-dimensions of perceptions on online games. Especially, we found significant differences between adolescents and parents generation in the perceptions on violence and sociality of online games. This result shows that the generation gap in these two factors may cause the conflict between parents and adolescents with regard to online game activities. Also, we ascertained the significant generation gap in the perception on parent-adolescent relationship with regard to online game activities. This result implies that parent-adolescent relationship in the developmental process of adolescents in real life was reflected in the perception on parent-adolescent relationship with regard to online game activities. Our contributions are in specifying the generation gap in the sub-dimensions of the perceptions on online games and in identifying the main causes of the conflict between parents group and adolescent group with regard to online game activities.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences in patterns of temperament and character, as assessed by the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory (JTCI), between the children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the control group in a community sample. In addition, we examined the potential differences on JTCI profiles according to the ADHD subtypes. Methods : Parents of 185 ADHD subjects (mean age $9.0{\pm}1.7$ years), as diagnosed by the DISC-IV, and 185 age- and gender-matched comparison children have completed the parent's version of the JTCI. Results : The ADHD group scored significantly higher in Novelty Seeking and lower in Persistence than the comparison group on JTCI. However, there were no significant differences in the temperament or character profiles by the ADHD subtypes. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that the temperamental factors of higher Novelty Seeking and lower Persistence are related to ADHD. The temperament or character profiles in this study do not provide support for the distinctiveness of the ADHD subtypes.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the scales measuring adolescent depression. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using CES-D and RADS-2-K as sales measuring adolescent depression. The participants were 1,217 adolescents from two middle schools located in South Korea. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0. All the items included in the two instruments were analysed through content analysis. Results: The study revealed that the two instruments produced different results in the number of depressive students, depression levels according to subjects' characteristics, and item distribution based on content analysis. The total number of the students belonging to the depression group was 194, including 132 from CES-D and 183 from RADS-2-K. Based on the content analysis covering two categories, general and adolescent depression, the study determined fifteen subcategories in the items of the two scales. Conclusion: In this study, CES-D showed less sensitivity than RADS-2-K in depression levels according to factors relevant to adolescent depression, and both scales had no item for three subcategories of adolescent depression and one subcategory of general depression. The researcher suggests that further studies to evaluate the validity of adolescent depression scales will be useful for helping adolescents with depression.

  • This study was performed to investigate the hand size growth of Korean adolescents boys. Subjects were between 14 and 19 years (n=352). We collected the right hand size data of 19 measurements from each subject using 3D hand scanner. The total 26 hand measurements were analyzed including seven calculated measurements. Subjects were divided into three age groups (early, middle and late). Their hand size were compared. The results showed that all hand length measurements were significantly difference among age groups. Adolescent boys hands were sharply grown at age 16 years old. The hand dimensions of middle age group were compared with twenties men (n=215). There were significant differences between two groups. The middle age adolescents' hands were shorter and thicker than twenties men. Subjects were also divided by weight and height. Weight and height was closely related to hand size. The heavier and taller subjects had the thicker hand. Their fingers were longer than others. The adolescent boys and twenties men who were taller than the twenties' average height (173.4cm) were compared. Twenties men's hands were longer and thinner than that of adolescent boys. These results imply that the male adolescent hands grow short and thick in the adolescent period. Fingers continuously grow up as a long and thin shape after adolescent period.

  • Objective: To investigate the prevalence of malocclusion with respect to grade, sex, and year among Korean pre-adolescent and adolescent students during 2012-2017. Methods: A total of 165,996 students (first grade [E1, 6-7 years of age], fourth grade [E4, 9-10 years], seventh grade [M1, 12-13 years], and tenth grade [H1, 15-16 years]) were selected by stratified sampling method and underwent the nationwide oral health examination performed by the Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea. The malocclusion assessments based on dentists' judgments were "no malocclusion," "needs orthodontic treatment (N-OTx)," and "under orthodontic treatment (U-OTx)." The sum of N-OTx and U-OTx cases was determined as the number of students with malocclusion. After analyzing the prevalence of malocclusion according to grade, sex, and year-by-year differences, Pearson correlation analyses and two-way analyses of variance were performed. Results: The prevalence of malocclusion was 18.7%, which increased with the grades (E1 [8.3%] < E4 [15.8%] < M1 [22.9%] < H1 [25.3%], p < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of malocclusion in each grade group for the period (p > 0.05) without significant correlation (E1, ρ = 0.129; E4, ρ = -0.495; M1, ρ = 0.406; H1, ρ = -0.383; all p > 0.05). The prevalence of malocclusion within each grade group over the six-year period was more prominent in the female (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Further studies are necessary to modify the malocclusion assessment method to account for specific types of malocclusion in pre-adolescent and adolescent students.

  • This study was conducted to find adolescent females perception of body image. The survey was carried out by self-questionnaires with 463 female school and college students in Daegu. Analysis of data was done using t-test, and ANOVA with the SAS computer program. The average height, weight and BMI of the subjects were 161.2cm, 53.4kg and 20.51kg/$m^2$. It appeared that 33.3% of the subjects were off the normal range of body weight ; in particular 25.1% of the subjects were under weight. While the subjects’perception of their own current body image was not distorted, they were dissatisfied with their body image because they wanted a very thin figure. Subjects were divided into 3 groups -underweight, normal weight, overweight-according to their current body size. Their perceptions of ideal and desired figures differed significantly between the groups, but they thought a thinner figure than normal body image as ideal and desired body image even in overweight group. As a result, dissatisfaction of body image in the overweight group was significantly larger than the normal-weight group, and that of the normal-weight group was larger than the underweight group. Percentages of weight control attempt were 51.7% and 64.7% in the normal weight and underweight subjects, respectively. Subjects were divided into 2 groups according to their weight control experience : those who have attempted, and who have not attempted. Weight control attemptees had a higher level of dissatisfaction with their body image than non-attemptees, both because weight control attemptees were fatter, and they perceived a thinner figure as an ideal and as a desired body image thin non-attemptees. From the results of this study, we confirmed that one of reasons of excessive weight control behavior among adolescent females was distorted perception about ideal body image.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the comparison of the effects of manual therapy combined with exercise on range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, and functional performance in adolescent baseball players with internal impingement syndrome of the shoulder. Methods : The subjects were 30 patients diagnosed with impingement syndrome of the shoulder. Thirty subjects are randomly assigned to each 3 different groups; Group 1. (exercise group), Group 2. (exercise+mobilization; EMOB group), Group 3. (exercise+mobilization with movement; EMWM group). The interventions were performed three times a week for 4 weeks. The main outcome measures were goniometer, Biodex dynamometer, and Korean Kerlan Jobe shoulder-elbow (K-KJOC) scores. The ROM (external and internal rotation), muscle strength (external and internal rotation: 60 °/sec., 180 °/sec.), and functional performance were compared among the groups. Results : No significant difference was observed among the groups in the range of external rotation of the shoulder before and after the intervention, but the range of internal and total rotation was significantly increased in Group 2, 3 compared to Groups 1. Muscle strength of external and internal rotation (60 °/sec., 180 °/sec.) was not significantly different among Group 1, 2, 3, and functional performance was significantly increased in Group 2, 3 compared to Group 1. However, there was no significant difference between Group 2 and Group 3 in all measurements. Conclusion : An intervention with manual therapy such as EMOB and EMWM was more effective than exercise alone for rapid recovery from shoulder injury and improvement in functional performance. However, further efforts are needed to identify effects of specific interventions with manual therapy.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the effects of environmental factors on depressive-like behavior and memory function during adolescence. We performed behavior tests in adolescent rats exposed to environmental enrichment, handling, and social deprivation for eight weeks. Methods: Wistar rats were randomly assigned to control, environmental enrichment, handling, and social deprivation groups at the age of four weeks. Results: In the forced swim test, the immobility time in the environmental enrichment group was decreased than that in the control group (p=.038), while the immobility time in the social deprivation group was increased than that in the control group (p=.035), the environmental enrichment group (p<.001), and the handling group (p=.001). In the Morris water maze test, the social deprivation group had an increased latency time than the control group (p=.013) and the environmental enrichment group (p=.001). In the passive avoidance test, the environmental enrichment group had an increased latency time than the control group (p=.005). However, the social deprivation group had reduced latency time than the socially housed groups (control: p=.030; environmental enrichment: p<.001; handling: p<.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that environmental factors play an important role in emotion and memory function during adolescence.
