In case of esthetic restorative procedure with zirconia restoration, we have to use resin cement because of not only just for retention but also esthetic reason. In such a clinical situation, we have to consider two bonding interfaces, one is tooth surface to resin cement and the other is zirconia surface to resin cement. There is well established bonding protocol between tooth surface to resin cement, but bonding protocol of zirconia surface to resin cement is still controversial. In scientific point of view, there are two mechanism for bonding of zirconia restoration.. One is mechanical retention and the other is chemical adhesion. However, we have three different options for bonding of zirconia restoration in clinical situation; 1) Tribo-chemical coating with silica and silane coupling agent 2) Zirconia primer with phosphate chemistry 3) Self-adhesive resin cement with phosphate chemistry.
The autor studied skin reactions and their incidences among 130 dental students and dentists to 2% Iidocaine HCI, 2% procaine HCI, direct resin, plaster of paris, zinc oxide-eugenol cement, and adhesive plaster by Patch test. The results of the studies are as follows:
1. Eighteen cases out of 130 revealed slight positive reaction toa 1 or 2 allergens.
2. Lidocaine HCL showed 1 case, procaine HCL 4 cases, direct resin 4 cases, Z.O.E. cement 1 case, adhesive plaster 13 case, and plaster of paris showed none.
3. Two delayed reaction were detected after 48 hours, one of which reacted both lidocaine HCL and direct resin, and the other one was a case of adhesive plaster.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different surface treatment methods on the microtensile bond strength of resin cement to resin nanoceramic (RNC). MATERIALS AND METHODS. RNC onlays (Lava Ultimate) (n=30) were treated using air abrasion with and without a universal adhesive, or HF etching followed by a universal adhesive with and without a silane coupling agent, or tribological silica coating with and without a universal adhesive, and divided into 6 groups. Onlays were luted with resin cement to dentin surfaces. A microtensile bond strength test was performed and evaluated by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test (${\alpha}$=.05). A nanoscratch test, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used for micromorphologic analysis (${\alpha}$=.05). The roughness and elemental proportion were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS. Tribological silica coating showed the highest roughness, followed by air abrasion and HF etching. After HF etching, the RNC surface presented a decrease in oxygen, silicon, and zirconium ratio with increasing carbon ratio. Air abrasion with universal adhesive showed the highest bond strength followed by tribological silica coating with universal adhesive. HF etching with universal adhesive showed the lowest bond strength. CONCLUSION. An improved understanding of the effect of surface treatment of RNC could enhance the durability of resin bonding when used for indirect restorations. When using RNC for restoration, effective and systemic surface roughening methods and an appropriate adhesive are required.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate in vitro the effects of the self-adhesive resin cements RelyX U200 (3M ESPE) and seT PP (SDI Limited) on murine macrophages and the interference of the photoactivation. Materials and Methods: Cell viability assays, cell adherence, yeast phagocytosis of Saccharomyces boulardii and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were performed in the presence of capillaries containing the respective self-adhesive cement when photoactivated or not. Results: After long periods of contact, both types of cements, when not photoactivated, are more cytotoxic for macrophages. The seT PP cement when only chemically activated seems to interfere more negatively in the process of phagocytosis of yeasts S. boulardii. Both types of cements interfere in the cell adhesion process, independent of photoactivation. None of the types of cements tested was able to induce the production of ROS. Conclusions: Our results highlight the great importance of the photoactivation of self-adhesive resin cements in the dental clinic, since RelyX U200, when photoactivated, presented the best results within the evaluated parameters.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of the application method of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) and its influence on the adhesion of fiberglass posts cemented with a self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and Methods: Sixty human mandibular premolars were endodontically treated and divided into 5 groups (n = 12), according to the canal irrigant and its application method: 2 groups with conventional syringe irrigation (CSI)-2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (control) and 2% CHX- and 3 groups with 2% CHX irrigation/activation-by passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), Easy Clean file, and XP-Endo Finisher file. Two roots per group were evaluated for smear layer (SL) removal by scanning electron microscopy. For other roots, fiber posts were luted using a self-adhesive resin cement. The roots were sectioned into 6 slices for push-out bond strength (BS) (7/group) and nanoleakage (NL) (3/group). Data from SL removal were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (α = 0.05). Data from BS and NL were evaluated by 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results: For SL removal and BS, the CHX irrigation/activation promoted better values than CSI with CHX (p < 0.05), but it was not significantly different from CSI with NaOCl (p > 0.05). For NL, the lowest values were obtained by the chlorhexidine irrigation/activation groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Active 2% CHX irrigation can be used to improve the post space cleaning and adhesion before fiber post cementation with self-adhesive resin cements.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of wetting condition made by drying time on bonding of resin cement to dentin. Freshly extracted bovine teeth were grinded to expose flat dentin surfaces. After the exposed dentin surfaces were treated with pretreatment agents and water rinse, each wetting condition of dentin surfaces was made according to drying times and methods including slight blow bry for I-second by air syringe, blow dry for 20-second by air syringe, and 12-hour dry in desiccator respectively. and then, previously made composite resin specimens were bonded onto each conditioned dentin surface of the specimen using Panavia-21(Kuraray Co.), Bistite(Tokuso Co.), and Choice(use with All bond-2, Bisco Inc.) resin cement according as manufacturer's instruction. Bonded specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours, then the tensile bond strength was measured, cohesive failure rate was calculated, and fractured dentin surfaces and acrylic rod sides were examined under scanning electron microscope. The result were as follows ; In the group of bonding with Panavia-21 resin cement, higher tensile bond strength was seen in 12-hour dry group than in I-second and 20-second dry group(p<0.01). In the group of bonding with Bistite resin cement, higher tensile bond strength was seen in 1-second dry group than in 20-second and 12-hour dry group(p<0.01). In the group of bonding with Choice resin cement, no significant differences of bond strength under given drying time were seen. Cohesive failure rates derived from the groups of bonding with Panavia-21 and Choice resin cement were increased with the increase of tensile bond strength in each drying time. On SEM examination of fractured surface, adhesive failure mode with fractured resin tags was mostly seen in wet condition with I-second drying time in the group of bonding with Panavia-21 resin cement, mixed failure mode with shortened and fractured resin tag was seen in the group of bonding with Bistite resin cement, and regardless of drying time, and cohesive-adhesive mixed failure mode with fracture of 'Hollow' typed resin tags was mainly seen in the group of bonding with Choice resin cement.
Purpose: The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of a resin coating on the shear bond strength of indirect composite restoration bonded to dentin with a self adhesive resin cement and to compare the shear bond strength with that of a conventional resin cement. Materials and methods: The occlusal enamels of thirty six extracted noncarious human molars were removed until the dentin flat surfaces of the teeth were exposed. Then, they were divided into 3 groups. The dentin surfaces of group 1 and 3 were left without any conditioning, while the dentin surfaces of group 2 were resin-coated with Clearfil SE bond and a flowable resin composite, Metafil Flo. After all specimens were temporized for 24 hours, indirect composite resin blocks fabricated by Tescera were bonded to dentins by Unicem for group 1 and 2, and by Panavia F for group 3. After 48 hours of water storage, shear bond strengths were measured. The data was analyzed with one-way analysis of variance and multiple comparison test (Tukey method). Results: The shear bond strengths of Unicem applied to resin coated dentin surfaces were significantly higher than those of Unicem and Panavia F used to uncoated dentin surfaces (P<.0001). Conclusion: Application of a resin coating to the dentin surface significantly improved the shear bonding strength of a self adhesive resin cement in indirect restoration.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets depending on the variety of adhesives and whether saliva exists, by using self-etching primer (SEP). Groups were divided according to the type of adhesive into resin adhesive (Trans bond XT) and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ortho LC). One group of resin adhesive used XT primer after etching with 37% phosphoric acid, and the other group used self-etching primer. One group of resin-modified glass ionomer cement only used etching for bonding, and the other group used SEP. Each of the groups were also classified by whether saliva was contaminated or not. and then the shear bond strength was measured. The results showed that when using resin adhesive, the shear bond strength of SEP was lower than the XT primer. In the resin-modified glass ionomer cement groups, the shear bond strength which depends on the priming method, did not have a meaningful difference statistically When saliva was contaminated, the group which used SEP, regardless of the adhesive variety, had a greater shear bond strength than the normal priming group. From these results, SEP showed a shear bond strength that is possible to be used clinically, regardless of the adhesive variety. It can especially be clinically useful to use SEP to bond brackets even on tooth surfaces contaminated with saliva, because it offers the appropriate bonding strength as well as shorter treatment time and easy application.
Objectives: Hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) surface treatment of fiber posts has been reported to increase bond strength of fiber posts to resin cements. However, residual oxygen radicals might jeopardize the bonding procedure. This study examined the effect of three antioxidant agents on the bond strength of fiber posts to conventional and self-adhesive resin cements. Materials and Methods: Post spaces were prepared in forty human maxillary second premolars. Posts were divided into five groups of 8 each: G1 (control), no pre-treatment; G2, 10% $H_2O_2$ pre-treatment; G3, G4 and G5. After $H_2O_2$ application, Hesperidin (HES), Sodium Ascorbate (SA) or Rosmarinic acid (RA) was applied on each group respectively. In each group four posts were cemented with Duo-Link conventional resin cement and the others with self-adhesive BisCem cement. Push-out test was performed and data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA and tukey's post-hoc test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: There was a statistically significant interaction between the cement type and post surface treatment on push-out bond strength of fiber posts (p < 0.001, F = 16). Also it was shown that different posts' surface treatments significantly affect the push-out bond strength of fiber posts (p = 0.001). $H_2O_2$ treated posts (G2) and control posts (G1) cemented with Duo-link showed the highest ($15.96{\pm}5.07MPa$) and lowest bond strengths ($6.79{\pm}3.94$) respectively. Conclusions: It was concluded that $H_2O_2$ surface treatment might enhance the bond strength of fiber posts cemented with conventional resin cements. The effect of antioxidants as post's surface treatment agents depends on the characteristics of resin cements used for bonding procedure.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare film thickness of five kinds of resin luting cements [Comspan, Panavia Ex, Maryland bridge adhesive, All-bond C & B cementation kit, and Super-bond C & B]. Zinc-phosphate cement and glass-ionomer cement were used as the control group. In order to measure the film thickness the methods used were in broad compliance with ADA Specification No. 8, a tapered-die system that simulates clinical conditions more closely, and the connected tapered-die system that simulates bridge conditions. The inorganic filler size of resin cements was also examined with scanning electron micrographs. The results were obtained as follows ; 1. The film thickness of resin cements was increased in the order of Comspan, Panavia Ex, Super-bond C & B, Maryland bridge adhesive, and All-bond C & B cementation kit. Maryland bridge adhesive and All-bond C & B cementation kit showed significantly higher film thickness than the control group(p<0.01). 2. For all resin cements, there was a significant difference of film thickness between the ADA method and the tapered-die system. Generally, the tapered-die system demonstrated lower film thickness than the ADA method(p<0.01). 3. There was no significant difference in film thickness between the tapered-die system and the tapered-die bridge system in all resin cements(p<0.01). 4. The scanning electron microscope showed that the cement with larger filler had a tendency to be higher in film thickness.
