In this study, the bonding strengths of adhesively bonded joints are experimentally investigated. A series of lap-shear tests are conducted using single lap type adhesive joints. In order to analyse the joint fabrication factors that affected the bonding strength, the parametric tests are conducted with various thickness of adhesive, surface roughness and fillet of adhesive. In addition, for the comparative study with the welded joint, lap-shear tests using specimens with 2 welded sides and 4 welded sides are also carried out. The quantitative results of the strength analysis are summarized, and some proposals are made on setting up testing standards for adhesively bonded joints.

The objective of this work is to develop a criterion for predicting the failure strength of the joints bonded by ductile adhesives. To obtain a criterion, first, fracture tests were carried out for T-peel joint and Single-lap joint with widely differing joints geometries. Then using the fracture loads obtained at tests, the finite element analysis were performed, in which the stresses in the adhesive bonds were calculated in great detail. After examining four epoxy adhesives, it is concluded that the fracture of adhesively bonded joint occurs when the maximum of the ratio of the mean to effective stresses exceeds a constant value which can be determined from analysis and test for each adhesive.

The evaluation of joint fatigue strength of light weight materials for an electrical vehicle body has been performed through T-peel joint tests with the design parameters such as joint style, adherend type, adherend thickness, adhesive thickness, and various adhesives. Fatigue strength was evaluated through 5-Hz, tension-tension, load controlled test with the zero stress ratio. It was observed that the fatigue strength of the joint increases with the increase of the adherend thickness. With the increase of the adhesive thickness, however, the fatigue strength of the joint increases insignificantly. An aluminum-FRP adherend combination shows much higher fatigue strength than an aluminum-aluminum adherend combination. The results of fatigue tests were found to be consistent with those of static tests.
The paper analyzes the problem of torsion in an adhesive non-tubular bonded single-lap joint. The joint considered consists of two thin rectangular section beams bonded together along a side surface. Assuming the materials involved to be governed by linear elastic laws, equilibrium and compatibility equations were used to arrive at an integro-differential relation whose solution makes it possible to determine torsional moment section by section in the bonded joint between the two beams. This is then used to determine the predominant stress and strain field at the beam-adhesive interface (stress field along the direction perpendicular to the interface plane, equivalent to the applied torsional moment and the corresponding strain field) and the joint's elastic strain (absolute and relative rotations of the bonded beam cross sections). All the relations presented were obtained in closed form. Results obtained theoretically are compared with those given by a three dimensional finite element numerical model. Theoretical and numerical analysis agree satisfactorily.
The tensile and fatigue experiments were conducted with tensile-shear specimens for investigating the strength of adhesive bonded and mechanical press joints of SPCC steel sheet used in the field of the automobile industry. The optimal punch press force was evaluated 50kN for combining epoxy adhesive bonding and mechanical press joining with a diameter of 8.3mm using SPCC sheet with a thickness of 0.8mm. The combining epoxy adhesive bonding and mechanical press joining exhibits the maximum tensile force of 750N. The fatigue strengths of the combination of adhesive bond and mechanical press joint and pure adhesive joint were evaluated 370N and 320N at 106cycles, respectively. These values correspond to 22% and 20% of their maximum tensile forces, respectively. However, the fatigue strength of the combination of adhesive bond and mechanical press joining was much lower than that of pure mechanical press joining.

Adhesive-bonded joints are widely used in the industry. Recently, applications of adhesive bonding joints have been increased extensively in automobile and aircraft industry. The strength of adhesive joints is influenced by the surface roughness, adhesive shape, stress distribution, and etc. However, the magnitude of the influence has not yet been clarified because of the complexity of the phenomena. In this study, as the fundamental research of adhesive bonding joints, the effects of adhesive shape and loading speed on bonding strength properties and durability of aluminum to polycarbonate single-lap joints were studied. To evaluate the effect of adhesive shape, several modified shapes were used, and loading speeds were varied from 0.05 to 5 mm/min. As a result, the load-displacement distribution was shown a brittle fracture tendency. The trigonal edged single lap and bevelled lap joints showed the higher strength than the plain single lap, trigonal single lap, joggle lap and double lap joints in same adhesive area. The fractures of trigonal single lap and trigonal edged single lap joints that had the higher strength level were shown as the mixture type of the cohesive and interfacial-failure, mostly joggle lap joints that had the lower strength level were shown as the adhesive-failure.
This paper is concerned with a study on fracture strength of composites in an adhesive single lap joint. The tests were carried out on joint specimens made with hybrid stacked composites consisting of the polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the fracture properties adjacent to adhesive bonded joint of natural fiber reinforced composite specimens. From the results, natural fiber reinforced composites have lower tensile strength than the original polyester. But tensile-shear strength of natural fiber reinforced composites with bamboo layer far from adhesive bond is as high as that of the original polyester adhesive bonded joints. Spew filet at the end of the overlap reduced the stress concentration at the bonded area. Spew fillet and position of bamboo natural fiber layer have a peat effect on the tensile-shear strength of natural fiber reinforced composites including adhesive bonded joints.

The adhesively bonded tubular single lap joint shows a nonlinear relationship between the applied torque and the resulting displacement under the static-torsional loading, which is induced from the nonlinear properties of the adhesive. However the torque transmission capability in the case of the dynamic-torsional loading is much less than that in the case of the static-torsional loading, the stress level of the adhesive is usually in the region of the linear stress and strain relation and the stress distributions of the joint can be obtained by the linear analysis. In this paper, a failure model for the adhesively bonded tubular single lap joint under the torsional fatigue loading was developed with respect to the adhesive thickness that was a critical factor in predicting the static torque transional-cyclic loadings was proposed.

The adhesively bonded tubular single lap joint shows large nonlinear behavior in the loaddisplacement relation, because structural adhesives for the joint are usually rubber toughened, which endows adhesives with nonlinear shear properties. since the majority of load transfer of the adhesively bonded tubular single lap joint is accomplished by the nonlinear behavior of the adhesive, its torque transmission capability should be calculated incorporating nonlinear shear properties. However, both the analytic and numerical analyses become complicated if the nonlinear shear properties of the adhesive are included during the calculation of torque transmission capabilities. In this paper, in order to obtain the torque transmission capabilities easily, an iterative solution which includes the nonlinear shear properties of the adhesive was derived using the analytic solution with the linear shear properties of the adhesive. Since the iterative solution can be obtained very fast due to its simplicity, it has been found that it can be used in the design of the adhesively bonded tubular single lap joint.

The objectives of this research are to establish the criteria of peel occurrence considering the shape of bond terminus and to compare the strength properties of some adhesive joints. The criteria of feel occurrence at the bond terminus was suggested. Peel loads of some adhesive joint(butt joint, T -shape specimen, single lap joint) were determined from tensile tests. Principal stress distributions of these joints were determined from finite element method analysis. Then, peel occurrence was estimated with intensity of stress singularity ' $K_{prin.}$' when the terminus shape was square, with average principal stress when the terminus shape was rounded. The conclusions are summarized as follows; (1) In the non-filleted model(e.g., butt joint, T-shape specimen), principal stress shows singularity at the bond terminus, intensity of stress(principal stress) singularity ' $K_{prin.}$&apso; can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus. (2) In the filleted model(e.g., single lap joint), principal stress doesn't show singularity at the bond terminus. Average principal stress can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus.'t show singularity at the bond terminus. Average principal stress can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus.
