  • Due to intrinsic load eccentricity, severe peel stress concentration occurs at both ends of the single-lap joint. To avoid load eccentricity as well as the singular tensile peel stress in the joint interface, composite wavy-lap joint is proposed. In this paper, refined 3-D stress analysis of wavy-lap joint is performed by finite element method using parallel mutifrontal solver. Analysis results show that the singular tensile peel stress concentration is totally avoided in wavy-lap joint, and that loads are more evenly transferred over the length of the joint. Therefore, the strength of wavy-lap joint is significantly higher than that of conventional single-lap joint. And it is believed that even higher strengths can be obtained by optimizing the new design configuration.

  • The bending performances of sloped finger-joints in Pinus densiflora S. et Z. were tested in order to improve the strength properties of finger-joint Sloped finger-cut pieces were jointed with four kinds of adhesives(resorcinol-phenol, oilic urethane, polyvinyl acetate, and polyvinyl-acryl acetate resin). The slope ratios of finger joints were 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0. The MOE, MOR and defletion to maximum load in bending of sloped finger-joints and solid wood specimen were measured. The results were: 1. The efficiencies of MOE to finger and sloped finger-joints were 82% or greater in every kind of adhesives except polyvinyl-acryl acetate resin adhesive and there were some effect of slope on the MOE in a sloped finger-joint for polyvinyl-acryl acetate and oilic urethane resin adhesives. 2. The effects of slope on the MOR to sloped finger-joints were showed in every kind of adhesive, because the efficiencies of MOR increased with increasing slope ratio in sloped finger-joints. The efficiencies of MOR to slope ratios of 0 and 2.0 ranged 43~65% and 76~82%, respectively. There was almost no effect of the kinds of adhesives on the MOR to the slope ratio of 2.0. 3. It was found impossible to estimate the bending strength of sloped finger-jointed Pinus densiflora S. et Z. by using MOE. The correlation coefficient(0.124) between MOE and MOR was very low and not significant at 5% level.

  • The problem of interface crack in the bonded structures has received a great deal of attention in recent years. In this paper the aluminum bonded single lap-joint containing the interface edge crack is investigated. The tensile load and the average shear stress of the adhesive joints which have different crack length are obtained from the static tensile tests. The critical value of crack length to provoke the interface fracture is determined to a/L=0.4, where a is the interface crack length and L is the adhesive lap-length. The fracture mechanical parameters are introduced to confirm the existence of the critical crack length. The compliance and the stress intensity factors are calculated using the displacement and the stress near the interface crack tip by the boundary element method. These numerical results support the experimental results that the critical value of a/L is 0.4. It is known that the compliance and the stress intensity factors are the efficient parameters to estimate the bonded single lap-joint containing the interface edge crack.

  • With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, the design of composite joint have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the failure strengths of the hybrid composite joints which were composed of a combination of an adhesive joint and a mechanical joint were evaluated and predicted. The 10 hybrid joint specimens which have different w/d, e/d and adherend thickness were manufactured and tested. The damage zone theory and the failure area index method were used for the failure prediction of the adhesive joint and the mechanical joint, respectively and the hybrid joints were assumed to be failures if either of the two failure criteria was satisfied. From the results of experiments and analyses, the failure strengths of the hybrid joints could be predicted to within 25.5%.

  • The evaluation of joint fatigue strength of light weight materials for electrical vehicle body has been performed through single lap joint tests with the design parameters such as joint style, adherend, bonding overlap length and bonding thickness. Fatigue strength was evaluated through 5-Hz, tension-tension, load controlled test with the stress ratio zero value. It is experimentally observed that fatigue strength of joint increases for the increase of overlap length. The combinations of Al-Al and Al-FRP adherends show that fatigue strength of joint is hardly changed for the increase of bonding thickness, but FRP-FRP adherend specimen shows that fatigue strength of joint increases after decreases for the increase of bonding thickness. Al-Al adherend specimen has much higher fatigue length than Al-FRP and FRP-FRP adherend specimens. Riveting at adgesive bonded joint gives little effect on fatigue strength.

  • The single lap joint is the most studied joint in the literature in terms of both theory and practice. It is easy to manufacture and the lap shear strength is a useful value for strength assessment and quality control. Simple design rules exist such as the one present in standard ASTM 1002 or in a recent paper by Adams and Davies. The main factors that have an influence on the lap shear strength are the type of adhesive, i.e. ductile or brittle, the adherend yield strength and the overlap length. The overlap increases the shear strength almost linearly if the adhesive is sufficiently ductile and the adherend does not yield. For substrates that yield, a plateau is reached for a certain value of overlap corresponding to the yielding of the adherend. For intermediate or brittle adhesives, the analysis is more complex and needs further investigation. In order to quantify the influence of the adhesive, the adherend and the overlap on the lap shear strength, the experimental design technique of Taguchi was used. An experimental matrix of 27 tests was designed and each test was repeated three times. The influence of each variable could be assessed as well as the interactions between them using the statistical software Statview. The results show that the most important variable on the lap shear strength is the overlap length followed by the type of adherend.

  • Isocyante terminated urethane prepolymers were synthesized by the reaction of 4,4'-dimethyl phenyldiisocyanate(MDI) and ester type polyols such as ethylene glycol/ butanediol adipate(EBA), neopentylglycol/butanediol adipate (NBA) and hexanediol adipate (HA) . All of the NCO-terminated urethane prepolymers are solid at room temperature, but they become mobile enough to be disposed onto a substrate upon heating about $80^{\circ}C$. Subsequently, they are solidified and cured through the reaction with moisture. Tensile behavior of the ore-thane hotmelt exhibits characteristic features depending on the type of polyol. The adhesive strength determined by single lap shear joint is higher in order of HA, NBA and EBA based ore thane hotmelt, which can be correlated with the magnitude of breaking energy of the cured films. The failure mode are cohesive for all cases and the adhesive strength increases as the test is performed faster. This indicates that the strength of the adhesive joint is primarily dependent upon the bulk properties of the adhesives.

  • A vibration response-based detection system was used to investigate the adhesive areas of single-lap joints using a nonlinear transformation approach for deep learning. In industry or engineering fields, it is difficult to know the condition of an invisible part within a structure that cannot easily be disassembled and the conditions of adhesive areas of adhesively bonded structures. To address these issues, a detection method was devised that uses nonlinear transformation to determine the adhesive areas of various single-lap-jointed specimens from the vibration response of the reference specimen. In this study, a frequency response function with nonlinear transformation was employed to identify the vibration characteristics, and a virtual spectrogram was used for classification in convolutional neural network based deep learning. Moreover, a vibration experiment, an analytical solution, and a finite-element analysis were performed to verify the developed method with aluminum, carbon fiber composite, and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene specimens.
