A methodology is presented for the failure prediction of composite single-lap bonded joints considering both of composite adherend failure and bondline failure. An elastic-perfectly plastic model of adhesive and a delamination failure criterion are used in the methodology. The failure predictions have been performed using finite element method and the proposed methodology. The failure prediction results such as failure mode and strength have very good agreements with the test results of joint specimens with various bonding methods and parameters. The influence of variations in the effective strength (that is, adhesion performance) and plastic behavior of adhesive on the failure characteristics of composite bonded Joints are investigated numerically. The numerical results show that optimal joint strength is archived when adhesive and delamination failure occur in the same time.

Strength and failure of composite-to-aluminum rivetted, bonded, and rivet/bonding hybrid single-lap joints were investigated by experiment. A total of 82 joint specimens were tested with 3 different overlap lengths and 2 types of stacking sequence. FM73m adhesive film and NAS9308-4-03 rivet were used for hybrid joints. While failure loads of the bonded and hybrid joints increased as the overlap length increased, failure loads of the rivetted joints were not affected by the overlap length. Effect of the stacking sequence was not remarkable in the simple bonded or rivetted joints. Failure loads of the hybrid joints, however, showed the maximum of 30% difference depending on the stacking sequence. Major failure mode of the bonded and hybrid joints was the delamination of the composite adherend and failure mode of riveted joints was the rivet failure with local bearing.
Simplification of the manufacturing process in shoe making is essential to improve productivity and reduce production costs. To improve the adhesion of EVA foam used as a midsole, EVA/itaconated EPDM(EPDM-g-IA)(80/20wt%) blend was prepared using Torque Rheometer-Plasti-Corder, and 1,6-hexamethylenediamine/crosslinking agent/foaming agent/additive were mixed, followed by amidation reaction and foaming to prepare EVA/EPDM-g-IA foam for shoe midsole. In this study, we investigate the effect of the content of 1,6-hexamethylenediamine(0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0) on the mechanical properties, water-contact angle and adhesion of EVA/itaconated EPDM foam. As the content of 1,6-hexamethylenediamine increased, mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, tensile elastic modulus, hardness, and water-contact angle were lowered, but elongation at break and compression set(%) were increased. Both normal type and non-UV type adhesive strength increased with increasing diamine content. In particular, it was found that the adhesion strength of the non-UV type adhesion increased sharply with increasing diamine content. As a result, an adherend rupture occurs in a foam sample having a content of 1,6-hexamethylenediamine of 3phr. From this, it can be seen that the EVA/itaconated EPDM foam for shoe midsoles, which can be used for non-UV adhesion without primer and UV treatments, have been developed.
The comparison of the numerical results with those measured by the experiment showed good agreement. The design of composite joint which is the weakest part in the composite structures has become a very important research area since the composite materials are widely used in the aircraft and machine structure. In this paper, the new composite key joints that minimize the fiber discontinuity and strength degradation of adherend were proposed and their failure loads were evaluated. The failure index and damage area method were used for the failure prediction of the composite key joint. From the tests, the failure load of the composite key joint was 93% larger than that of a mechanical joint and the key joint whose slot depth and edge length were 0.88mm and 20mm had the largest failure load. Also, the analytic failure modes by the failure index and damage area were compared with experimental failure modes.

Adherend samples were made from unsaturated polyester and woven and mat glass fibers by the hand layup and vacuum methods. The mechanical properties of the adhesive, composite adherends, and terminal-joint and secondary-joint specimens were determined experimentally. Combinations of the experiment results and the bonding theory were used in this study. The maximum and average shear stresses were calculated based on the maximum tensile force and geometry parameters of the joint specimens. The results of the maximum and average shear stresses were compared and evaluated for six joints. The results showed that the grinding and grind/acetone joint had the highest strength among three types of terminal-joints. Similarly, the mat-mat and mat-woven joints had the highest strength among three types of secondary-joints with the same value. Conversely, no treatment and woven-woven bonding had very low strength. In each case, failure occurred always at two ends and then moved toward the middle area of the overlap length.
The effect of zirconate having - NH functional group on the T-peel and lap shear strength of $CaCO_3$ containing structural epoxy adhesive for car body assembly was investigated. Curing behavior of epoxy adhesive samples were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) techniques. The addition of zirconate up to 7.5 phr did not affect the curing mechanism of epoxy adhesive. While the small amount of zirconate addition less than 1.1 phr increased the cross-linking density, the excess addition of zirconate resulted in the increase of uncross-linked impurity. From the increase of T-peel and lap shear strength and the change of fracture mode from the adhesive failure to the mixed one, it was considered that the small addition of zirconate was effective in improving the adhesion strength of epoxy adhesive to the adherend and inorganic filler surfaces. The formation of uncross-linked impurity with the excess addition of zirconate was considered to decrease the joint strength by decreasing the cohesive strength of the cured epoxy.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the failure and strengths of carbon composite-to-aluminum single-lap bonded joints with 5 different bonding lengths. Joint specimens were fabricated to have secondary bonding of laminate and aluminum with a film type adhesive, FM73m. Tested joints have the bonding strengths between the values of aluminum-to-aluminum joints and composite-to-composite joints. In the joints with bonding length-to-width ratio smaller than 1, the strength decreases as the bonding length increases. In the joints with the ratio larger than 1, however, the strength converges to a constant value. Final failure mode of all the specimens was delamination. To use the maximum strength of the adhesive, it is important to design the joint to have strong resistance to delamination.
A study on the heating behavior and adhesion property of structural epoxy adhesive through induction heating have been conducted. An adhesive for induction heating was manufactured through mixing with nano and micro sized Fe3O4. From the results, it was observed that induction heating is less affected by adherend (GFRP) thickness than oven heating. The heating rate of Fe3O4 embedded epoxy adhesive using induction heating much higher than that of oven curing process and it is more appreciable when the contents of Fe3O4 increased. Furthermore, adhesion strength increased with increase of Fe3O4 particle contents.

Repairing and strengthening structural members by bonding composite materials have received a considerable attention in recent years. The major problem when using bonded FRP or steel plates to strengthen existing structures is the high interfacial stresses that may be built up near the plate ends which lead to premature failure of the structure. As a result, many researchers have developed several analytical methods to predict the interface performance of bonded repairs under various types of loading. In this paper, a numerical solution using finite - difference method (FDM) is used to calculate the interfacial stress distribution in beams strengthened with FRP plate having a tapered ends under thermal loading. Different thinning profiles are investigated since the later can significantly reduce the stress concentration. In the present theoretical analysis, the adherend shear deformations are taken into account by assuming a parabolic shear stress through the thickness of both beam and bonded plate. The shear correction factor for I-section beams is also included in the solution. Numerical results from the present analysis are presented to demonstrate the advantages of use the tapers in design of strengthened beams.
With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, the design of composite joint have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the failure strengths of the hybrid composite joints which were composed of a combination of an adhesive joint and a mechanical joint were evaluated and predicted. The 10 hybrid joint specimens which have different w/d, e/d and adherend thickness were manufactured and tested. The damage zone theory and the failure area index method were used for the failure prediction of the adhesive joint and the mechanical joint, respectively and the hybrid joints were assumed to be failures if either of the two failure criteria was satisfied. From the results of experiments and analyses, the failure strengths of the hybrid joints could be predicted to within 25.5%.
