Using microarray analysis, we determined those Salmonella genes induced at the entry of stationary phase, and subsequently discovered that uncharacterized yliH was induced most dramatically. We set out to establish the molecular mechanism underlying the stationary phase induction of yliH under the standard culture condition, LB with vigorous aeration, by analyzing its promoter activity in various mutant backgrounds, lacking stationary phase ${\sigma}$, $RpoS^-$, or stringent signal molecules ppGpp, ${\Delta}relA$${\Delta}spoT$. It was found that the stationary phase induction of yliHp was partially dependent on rpoS but entirely dependent on ppGpp. DNA sequence analysis revealed that the Salmonella yliH gene is composed of 381 base-pair nucleotides, with overall amino acid sequence revealing 76.38% amino acid identity and 88.98% similarity with Escherichia coli yliH, although no motif from data base was noted for its possible role. Recently however, it has been reported that yliH in E. coli was implicated in biofilm formation and motility by repressing these activities (Domka et al., 2006). We have constructed a mutant Salmonella deleting yliH gene by allele replacement and examined its phenotype, and found that the yliH in Salmonella more or less affects motility and adherence by enhancing these activities. The effect on biofilm formation in Salmonella was uncertain. Moreover, addition of cloned yliH of E. coli into Salmonella did not reduce motility or adherence. Taken together, it appears that the pathways implicating yliH for biofilm formation and motility in E. coli and in Salmonella are somewhat different.

This study sought to determine changes in self-selected diets in response to a high energy tomato pasta entree. Thirty men, mostly African-American, who were diagnosed with prostate cancer and also scheduled for prostatectomy were enrolled in the study. Dietary intakes were obtained by 24 hr diet recall for 3 days before the intervention and 3 days in week 2 during the intervention. Tomato pasta entrees were formulated to contain 30 mg of lycopene with roughly the same macronutrient composition and averaged 771 kcal/entree. Mean adherence to lycopene dose was 82% and, days when the entree was consumed, the mean adherence to lycopen was 90%. Lycopene intake in their self-selected diet decreased from 5 to 1 mg/day which lowered the exposure to lycopene, planned during the intervention. The men were able to decompensate for most of the added energy to their diet, but there was still a mean increase in total intake of 242 kcal/day (p=0.04), which did not result in weight gain over the short period of the study. There were no significant changes in the percent of energy from protein, fat or carbohydrates, but dietary cholesterol increased from 341 to 472 mg/day (p=0.0002). Mean intakes of vitamins A and C, and folate were not significantly different and were above the EAR. Vitamin E intake decreased, but, because of the variance in intake, the decrease was not statistically significant. Possible deterioration of diet quality should be a consideration when recommending whole food interventions for the prevention of chronic disease or the amelioration of physiological dysfunction.
Purpose: This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of telemonitoring (TM) in the management of children and adolescents with asthma. Methods: We searched Ovid-MEDLINE, Ovid-EMBASE, CENTRAL (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), and 5 domestic databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published through December 2017. Two reviewers independently selected relevant studies, assessed methodological quality and extracted data. We performed a meta-analysis of TM versus usual care and summarized the intervention characteristics of included studies. Results: Of the 3,095 articles identified, 8 RCTs (9 articles) were included in this review. The type of TM intervention of included studies was varying across studies (transmitted data, transmission frequency, data review, etc.). The pooled asthma control score was not significantly different between TM and usual care (standardized mean difference 0.04, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.20~0.28). Another pooled analysis demonstrated no statistically significant difference in asthma exacerbation between TM and usual care (odds ratio 0.95, 95% CI 0.43~2.09). Overall, the pooled results from these studies revealed that TM did not lead to clinically significant improvements in health outcomes, but some studies in our analysis suggested that TM increased patient medication adherence and intervention adherence. Conclusion: The current evidence base does not demonstrate any differences between TM intervention and usual care, but TM intervention might be considered a promising strategy for the delivery of self-management support for children and adolescents with asthma. Further well-designed studies are needed to assess the effects on clinical outcomes.
In the present study, the effect of $HgCl_2$on the function of human peripheral polymorphonuclear leukocytes(PMNs) was examined. PMNs were isolated from human peripheral blood with density centrifugation in Ficoll-Paque. The cells were then incubated with $0.5{\sim}5{\mu}M\;HgCl_2$and glass adherence, chemotactic activity and erythrocyte-antibody rosette forming activity were measured. $HgCl_2$ decreased the function of PMNs in all three aspects tested. $HgCl_2$significantly diminished glass adherence(40.5 {\mu}M: 92{\pm}12%$ (percentage of control, $mean{\pm}$ S.D.); 41 {\mu}M: 46{\pm}11%,$ P<0.01; $3{\mu}M: 35{\pm}7%,$P<0.01;$5{\mu}M:49{\pm}10%,$ P<0.01). Similarly, significant differences were observed in chemotactic activity after $HgCl_2$treatment compared with control (control: $0.95{\pm}0.14mm; 0.5 {\mu}M: 0.91{\pm}0.11 mm; 1 {\mu}M: 0.77{\pm}0.16mm, P<0.05; 3{\mu}M: 0.61{\pm} 0.06mm, P<0.01; 5{\mu}M: 0.15{\pm}0.03 mm, P<0.01).$ Also, 4HgCl_2$decreased the percentage of rosette-forming PMNs, indicating diminished phagocytic activity of PMNs upon $HgCl_2$ exposure compared with control (control: $58{\pm}4%; 1{\mu}M: 53{\pm}4%, p<0.05; 3{\mu}M: 49{\pm}3%, P<0.01; 5{\mu}M: 46{\pm}3%, P<0.01).$ Cell viability was not antered after $HgCl_2$treatment (483{\pm}5%$ viability in control PMNs versus $81{\pm}8%$ viability in $5{\mu}M$ Hg-treated PMNs), suggesting that the impaired PMN function after $HgCl_2$treatment was not due to nonspecific cytotoxicity induced by $HgCl_2$. $HgCl_2$-induced decrease in the function of PMNs may have some implications in depressed host susceptibilityupon bacterial challenge after mercury exposure.
Hypertension is among the most common and important risk factors for stroke, heart attack, and heart failure which is considered to be the leading cause of death in Korea. The prevalence rate of hypertension in Korea is 27.9%, according to the 2006 Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey. Since non-pharmacologic nutrition education is recommended as the first step in the management of hypertension, evaluation of nutrition program is needed to form strategies for improving patients' dietary adherence. This study was designed to evaluate the overall effectiveness of a hypertension nutrition education program (HNEP) for reducing the salt intake, at a public health center located in Gyunggi-province. The HNEP was offered for 16 weeks from May to September in 2007. Nutrition education activities included cooking classes, food preparation demonstrations, physical fitness programs, salty taste preference test sessions, games, case-study presentations, planning and evaluation of menus, etc. Forty patients participated fully in the program which had 47 female enrollees. Data about nutrient intake (24-hour recall), nutrition knowledge, food behavior were collected before (baseline) and after the program. Changes after program completion indicated the following: 1) diastolic blood pressure was decreased (p < 0.05), 2) sodium (salt) intake was also decreased (p < 0.01), especially baseline high salt intake group, 3) nutrition knowledge was improved (p<0.001), 4) dietary behaviors for maintaining a low salt diet was improved (p < 0.001), 5) participants preferred cooking class from nutrition education methods. As a conclusion, it appears that a nutrition education program for hypertensive female elderly for reducing the salt intake might effectively decrease blood pressure and salt intake. It also improves nutrition knowledge, dietary behavior, and finally adherence to a recommendable low-sodium diet.

Streptococcus mutans is considered one of the primary etiologic agents of dental caries. we studied the effect of the ethanol extracts of Tribuli fructus (T. fructus) on the growth, biofilm formation, acid production, adhesion and insoluble glucan synthesis of S. mutans. The ethanol extracts of T. fructus showed concentration dependent inhibitory activity against the growth and acid production of S. mutans, and produced significant inhibition at the concentration of 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 mg/ml compared to the control group. In the biofilm assay, the ethanol extracts of T. fructus inhibited formation of biofilm synthesized by S. mutans at the concentration of 0.05 mg/ml. The extracts markedly inhibited S. mutans adherence to HA treated with saliva, and cell adherence was repressed by more than 50% at the concentration 0.05 mg/ml. On the activity of glucosyltransferase which synthesizes water insoluble glucan form sucrose, ethanol extract of T. fructus showed more than 10% inhibition over the concentration of 0.025 mg/ml. Hence, we conclude that T. fructus might be a candidate of anticaries agent. Further studies are necessary to clarify the active constituents of T. fructus responsible for such biomolecular activities.

Ginsenoside Rg3, a saponin extracted from ginseng, has various pharmacological and biological activities; however, its effects against Brucella infection are still unclear. Herein, the inhibitory effects of ginsenoside Rg3 against intracellular parasitic Brucella infection were evaluated through bacterial infection, adherence assays, and LAMP-1 colocalization, as well as immunoblotting and FACS for detecting MAPK signaling proteins and F-actin polymerization, respectively. The internalization, intracellular growth, and adherence of Brucella abortus in Rg3-treated RAW 264.7 cells were significantly decreased compared with the Rg3-untreated control. Furthermore, an apparent reduction of F-actin content and intensity of F-actin fluorescence in Rg3-treated cells was observed compared with B. abortus-infected cells without treatment by flow cytometry analysis and confocal microscopy, respectively. In addition, treating cells with Rg3 decreased the phosphorylation of MAPK signaling proteins such as ERK 1/2 and p38 compared with untreated cells. Moreover, the colocalization of B. abortus-containing phagosomes with LAMP-1 was markedly increased in Rg3-treated cells. These findings suggest that ginsenoside Rg3 inhibits B. abortus infection in mammalian cells and can be used as an alternative approach in the treatment of brucellosis.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the quality of the Journal of Korean medicine case reports. Methods: Case reports published in the Journal of Korean Medicine from January 2015 to March 2020 were selected by using Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS) and the journal search system of the Korean Medical Association (https://www.jkom.org). The quality of the case reports was assessed using the Consensus-based Clinical Case Reporting Guideline Development (CARE) guidelines. Results: 33 case reports were selected for the assessment. Based on the CARE guidelines, 61.54% of the case reports included necessary information, but the quality level was uneven. More than 60% of the reports were missing data regarding 'Discussion of the strengths and limitations in your approach to this case', 'Intervention adherence and tolerability', 'Timeline', 'Medical, family, and psychosocial history including relevant genetic information', 'Patient perspective or experience', 'Adverse and unanticipated events', 'Administration of intervention', and 'De-identified demographic information and other patient specific information'. In most reports of over 90%, data regarding 'Diagnostic challenges', 'Intervention adherence and tolerability', and 'Key word' were not included. Conclusions: Efforts are needed to improve the quality of case reports in the Journal of Korean Medicine, and it is necessary to develop appropriate guidelines for case reporting for the Journal of Korean Medicine. In addition, all articles submitted to the Journal of Korean Medicine are to be complied with submission instructions and CARE guidelines.
This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable self-management instrument for pre-dialysis patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). A total of 143 patients with CKD recruited from a medical center completed the questionnaire. The dimension and items of self-management were composed by literature review. The items of self-management was evaluated using exploratory factor analysis and measures of reliability. Five factors were extracted and labelled adherence to treatment regimen and partnership, diet adherence, problem solving, health behavior, and pursuit of psycho-social health. The five factors accounted for 51.1% of total variance. Each factors showed acceptable internal reliability with Cronbach's alpha from 0.64-0.79. The developed self-management instrument can be useful in self control of their disease for patients with CKD, and both evaluating patients' self-management and developing intervention program for health care professionals.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to retrospectively investigate the influence of potential risk indicators on the development of peri-implant disease. Methods: Overall, 103 patients referred for implant treatment from 2000 to 2012 were randomly enrolled. The study sample consisted of 421 conventional-length (>6 mm) non-turned titanium implants that were evaluated clinically and radiographically according to preestablished clinical and patient-related parameters by a single investigator. A non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test or Kruskal-Wallis rank test and a logistic regression model were used for the statistical analysis of the recorded data at the implant level. Results: The diagnosis of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis was made for 173 (41.1%) and 19 (4.5%) implants, respectively. Age (${\geq}65$ years), patient adherence (professional hygiene recalls <2/year) and the presence of plaque were associated with higher peri-implant probing-depth values and bleeding-on-probing scores. The logistic regression analysis indicated that age (P=0.001), patient adherence (P=0.03), the absence of keratinized tissue (P=0.03), implants placed in pristine bone (P=0.04), and the presence of peri-implant soft-tissue recession (P=0.000) were strongly associated with the event of peri-implantitis. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, patients aged ${\geq}65$ years and non-adherent subjects were more prone to develop peri-implant disease. Therefore, early diagnosis and a systematic maintenance-care program are essential for maintaining peri-implant tissue health, especially in older patients.
