  • Energy efficiency is one of the most critical concerns for wireless sensor networks. By allowing sensor nodes in close proximity to cooperate in transmission to form a virtual multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) system, recent progress in wireless MIMO communications can be exploited to boost the system throughput, or equivalently reduce the energy consumption for the same throughput and BER target. However, these cooperative transmission strategies may incur additional energy cost and system overhead. In this paper, assuming that data collectors are equipped with antenna arrays and superior processing capability, energy efficiency of relevant traditional and cooperative transmission strategies: Single-input-multiple-output(SIMO), space-time block coding(STBC), and spatial multiplexing(SM) are studied. Analysis in the wideband regime reveals that, while receive diversity introduces significant improvement in both energy efficiency and spectral efficiency, further improvement due to the transmit diversity of STBC is limited, as opposed to the superiority of the SM scheme especially for non-trivial spectral efficiency. These observations are further confirmed in our analysis of more realistic systems with limited bandwidth, finite constellation sizes, and a target error rate. Based on this analysis, general guidelines are presented for optimal transmission strategy selection in system level and link level, aiming at minimum energy consumption while meeting different requirements. The proposed selection rules, especially those based on system-level metrics, are easy to implement for sensor applications. The framework provided here may also be readily extended to other scenarios or applications.

  • Spectrum handoff is the process of exchanging progressing data transmission from the current channel to another idle channel. The essential goal of spectrum handoff in CR(Cognitive Radio) networks is to perform consistent data transmission while sustaining performance of ongoing transmission of secondary users. This handoff procedure can cause additional latency that eventually affects on the performance of CR transmission. Channel prediction method is expected to avoid the disruption to primary users and to reduce the handoff latency. In this paper, adaptive channel prediction is proposed to cope with time-varying channel and an adaptive channel prediction based proactive handoff procedure is designed to enhance data transmission performance.

  • In this paper, a novel transmission scheme is proposed to improve the data rates of spatial modulation (SM) which has low complexity and improves the spectral efficiency in correlated channel environments. The conventional SM scheme utilizes partial multiple antennas to transmit signal constellations and additional bits using antenna combinations. Therefore the channel capacity of SM is less than that of the conventional multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) scheme which uses all the available antennas. In this paper, an SM transmission scheme is proposed to improve the channel capacity using a tight frame pre-coder. The improvement in channel capacity of the SM scheme will be shown using computer simulations.

  • In this paper, we newly introduce the three-level byte-inversion transmission method for preventing LED flicker in visible light communication (VLC). The VLC transmitter sequentially sends the original signal and the inverted signal in byte units using a three-level LED modulator. The average optical power of the LED is kept constant during data transmission, thus flicker-free. In the VLC receiver, the original data is easily recovered using a simple comparator. This structure is very simple because additional clock or carrier is not required for flicker prevention. The developed flicker prevention scheme could be very useful for constructing the flicker-free indoor VLC system in low cost.

  • Efficient Power consumption is important in sensor networks because charging of deployed sensor nodes is too difficult. So this paper focused on Modified-CBPER reduces energy consumption by reducing CBPER's data announcement ragne, and propose an algorithm to reduce power consumption by additional reduction of data announcement range. Proposed EM-CBPER(Enhanced Modified CBPER) somewhat increases power consumption of data request and data forwarding but it reduces total power consumption by reducing data announcement transmission of account for large quantity on total packet transmission.

  • The family of ISO/IEEE11073 standards is the basis of the e-health system and provides interoperability for personal health devices. In the early stage of e-health business, it was expected that people would use a health device individually. In this case, a measurement datum was episodically acquired and generally transmitted for one person at a time. Recently, a health device is expected to be used by multiple people, and large amounts of measurement data are gathered in a short time interval. In addition, mobile health devices have become more popular, so that energy efficient measurement data transmission is required, to prolong the use of a device. In IEEE11073 PHD standards, data transmission is classified into three different types: immediate individual transfer, small block transfer, and large block transfer. The large block transfer using PM-store concept provides efficient transmission. However, an existing PM-store has problem when a device is used by multiple people. To address the defined problem, a modified PM-segment that is in compliance with 11073 standards is proposed in this paper. In particular, the proposed PM-segment is designed to minimize the additional complexity of an agent instead of a manager and it is interoperable with the existing manager. The proposed PM-segment shows better performance than the existing PM-segment, in terms of memory requirements and expected queue time. Also, performance comparison among the three transfers is performed in regard to the delay time and communication power consumption points of view.

  • Even though current LTE/LTE-A mobile networks provide enough high data rate and low latency to support conventional wireless services, to support ultra-low delay services, such as virtual reality and remote control, in the next generation mobile communication network, it is required to provide very low delay about several ms. However, in the uplink transmission of the LTE/LTE-A system, the process of scheduling grant is required to obtain uplink resources for uplink transmission from the eNB. The process of granting uplink resources from eNB brings additional fixed latency, which is one of the critical obstacles to achieve low delay in uplink transmissions. Thus, in this paper, we propose a novel uplink transmission scheme called Cut-in uplink transmission, to reduce uplink latency. We provide the performance of the proposed uplink transmission scheme through simulations and show the proposed uplink transmission scheme provides lower uplink transmission delay than conventional uplink transmission scheme in LTE/LTE-A mobile networks.

  • Owing to the development in information and communications technologies have improved the technology for high-speed transmission of massive data, which has changed closed-circuit television (CCTV) video transmission technology. In particular, digitization of the CCTV video format and streaming technology has made it possible to minimize transmission loss and integrate video transmission and camera control(pan/tilt). It has also become possible to provide additional services like remote emergency warning broadcasting with just Internet Protocol (IP). However, because of the structural problems of IP, these changes have also brought about the threat of hacking of CCTV monitoring systems. In this study, we propose a methode to optimize network management by examining cases of enhancement of operational efficiency and security by improving the structure of CCTV monitoring network.

  • Korea augmentation satellite system (KASS), which is a satellite-based augmentation system tailored for Korea, was launched for development in 2014. SBAS is a standard for aviation but it can also be utilized in non-aviation applications. The type and content of transmitted in SBAS data format are restricted. In order to utilize SBAS in fields that require the precision within centimeters, additional information has to be transmitted. It is important that data transmitted in nonstandard SBAS data not affect any operation of SBAS equipment. In this paper, we propose a non-standard SBAS data transmission method applicable to non-aviation applications that does not affect aviation SBAS receivers.
