The need for a more affordable, reliable, clean and secure energy has led to explorations in non-traditional sources, particularly renewable energies. Wind is one of the cleanest energy sources that plays a significant role in augmenting sustainability. Wind turbines, as energy convertors, are usually tall and slender structures, and depending on their location (inland or offshore), they can be subject to high wind and/or strong wave loadings. These loads can cause severe vibrations with detrimental effects on energy production, structural lifecycle and initial cost. A dissipativity analysis study was carried out to know whether wind turbine towers require damping enhancement or rigidity modifications for vibration suppression. The results suggest that wind turbines are lightly damped structures and damping enhancement is a potential solution for vibration lessening. Accordingly, the paper investigates different damping enhancement techniques for vibration mitigation. The efficacy of tuned mass damper (TMD), tuned liquid column damper (TLCD), tuned sloshing damper (TSD), and viscous damper (VD) to reduce vibrations is investigated. A comparison among these devices, in terms of robustness and effectiveness, is conducted. The VD can reduce both displacement and acceleration responses of the tower, better than other types of dampers, for the same control effort, followed by TMD, TSD, and finally TLCD. Nevertheless, the use of VDs raises concerns about where they should be located in the structure, and their application may require additional design considerations.

This study reports the selection of dependent variables for momentum equations in general curvilinear coordinates. Catesian, covariant and contravariant velocity components were examined for the dependent variable. The focus of present study is confined to staggered grid system Each dependent variable selected for momentum equations are tested for several flow fields. Results show that the selection of Cartesian and covariant velocity components intrinsically can not satisfy mass conservation of control volume unless additional converting processes ore used. Also, Cartesian component can only be used for the flow field in which main-flow direction does not change significantly. Convergence rate for the selection of covariant velocity component decreases quickly as with the increase of non-orthogonality of grid system. But the selection of contravariant velocity component reduces the total mass residual of discretized equations rapidly to the limit of machine accuracy and the solutions are insensitive to the main-flow direction.

Viscoelastic dampers are known effective devices for response reduction under earthquakes and winds. This study addresses how to design the optimum viscoelastic dampers installed at the full scale five-story steel building and novel approach to carry out the experimental work to verify the damper performance. First, an exciter of hybrid mass-type actuator is designed, which can move the building and its mathematical model is derived. The integrated system of building-actuator is experimentally analyzed for mathematical model. Second, convex model is applied for the prediction of required additional damping ratios to reduce responses below a specified target level. Chevron-type viscoelastic dampers are manufactured and installed at the first and second inter-stories, which are optimum places for response reduction. Sine-sweep and white noise excitations, which are generated by the hybrid mass-type actuator, are applied to the full scale building without and with dampers for performance verification. The transfer function of the building with four dampers, two of them installed at each first and second inter-story, are found to be lower than that of the building with two dampers installed at the first inter-story

Experiments have carried out to investigate the effects of parameters, such as mass ratio of R141b-to-water, stirrer speed, brine inlet temperature, brine flowrate, and additives, on the performance of the cool storage system using R141b clathrate. The cool storage system in this experiment was composed of storage tank, refrigerator, and heater. The results show that the mass ratio of R141b-to-water, 1 : 3~1 : 3.5 gives the best performance and the stirring speed has optimum point as 600rpm. At this speed impeller Reynolds number is $1.01{\times}10^5$. The lower the inlet brine temperature and the highter the brine flowrate, the better performance. The addition of metal powder turned out to reduce the degree of supercooling. The supercooling reduction was proportional to the amount of the metal power. However when metal powder was added more than 0.1 wt%, there was no additional supercooling reduction. The surfactants shortened the time consumed for cool storage to the half of no surfactant added case.
High resolution spectroscopy of the yellow symbiotic star AG Draconis is performed with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to analyse the line profiles of Raman scattered O VI broad emission features at $6825{\AA}$ and $7082{\AA}$ with a view to investigating the wind accretion process from the mass losing giant to the white dwarf. These two spectral features are formed through inelastic scattering of O $VI{\lambda}{\lambda}32$ and 1038 with atomic hydrogen. We find that these features exhibit double-component profiles with red parts stronger than blue ones with the velocity separation of ~ 60 km s-1 in the O VI velocity space. Monte Carlo simulations for O VI line radiative transfer are performed by assuming that the O VI emission region constitutes a part of the accretion flow around the white dwarf and that Raman O VI features are formed in the neutral part of the slow stellar wind from the giant companion. The overall Raman O VI profiles are reasonably fit with an azimuthally asymmetric accretion flow and the mass loss rate ~ 4 ${\times}$ 10^{-7} M_sun yr^{-1}. We also find that additional bipolar neutral regions moving away with a speed ~ 70 km s^{-1} in the directions perpendicular to the orbital plane provide considerably improved fit to the red wing parts of Raman features.
The isolation of active compounds showing the inhibitory effect on glucosyltransferase(GTase) from cacao bean husk(CBH) extract was carried out for screening of anti-plaque agents. These active compounds were purified by additional column chromatography of MCI-gel CHP-20 and Sephadex LH-20 and their chemical structures were determined by NMR and mass spectroscopy. Two compounds showing the inhibitory effect on GTase from CBH extract were obtained. These compounds showed positive reactions with anisaldehyde-H2SO4 solution and FeCl3, and were identified as dimeric flavan-3-ols on TLC. By NMR and MS data analyses, the structures of two different flavan-3-ols were identified as procyanidin B-1 and procyanidin B-3, respectively.
Purpose: This study was conducted to measure adiposity and to investigate related factors in preschoolers born prematurely. Methods: A longitudinal follow-up study was conducted with 52 preschoolers at 5 years of corrected age among 343 preterm infants. Their adiposity status was evaluated based on measurements of body mass index, subscapular and triceps skin fold thickness (SFT), waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, and mid-arm circumference at a home visit. Results: The findings showed that SFT measurements, particularly at the triceps, reflected the degree of adiposity more accurately than other conventional measures. A shorter gestation, older maternal age, and the mother having more years of formal education were associated with higher levels of adiposity in the preschoolers. Conclusion: The adiposity of children born prematurely needs to be thoroughly monitored with additional SFT measurements, considering the risk of accelerated growth patterns overriding regular catch-up growth in children born prematurely.

Sports drinks help optimize and improve performance by delaying and eliminating the buildup of fatigue-causing substances in the body during exercise. Saengmaeg-san is a nature-friendly traditional beverage that has no side effects on the human body and can quench thirst. However, studies on the relationship between exercise ability and Saengmaeg-san are insufficient. The purpose of this study was to prescribe Saengmaeg-san during the summer training period of 4 weeks and to analyze the effect on body composition and exercise performance. Seventeen male participants were divided into 3 groups (Saengmaeg-san acid intake group [n=9], placebo group [n=8]), and body composition (height, weight, muscle mass, fat mass, BMI) and conducted exercise performance (total exercise time and HRmax). In our study, Saengmaeg-san intake had a positive effect on exercise performance, such as decreased body fat percentage, increased exercise time, and decreased HRmax. Therefore, Saengmaeg-san showed the potential as a sports drink. In the future, additional studies on fatigue-related substances, immune function-markers, and blood lipids are needed in order to clearly explain the change in exercise performance due to consumption of Saengmaeg-san.

Flow-Induced Vibration of steam generator tubes may result in fretting wear damage at the tube-to-support locations. KSNP(Korean Standard Nuclear Power plant) steam generators experienced fretting wear in the upper part of U-bend above the central cavity region of steam generators. This region has conditions susceptible to the flow-induced vibration, such as high flow velocity, high void fraction, and longer unsupported span. To improve its performance, APR1400 steam generator is designed with additional supports in this region to reduce unsupported span and to reduce peak velocity in the central cavity region. In this paper, we examined its performance improvement using ATHOS code. The thermal-hydraulic condition in the region of secondary side of APR1400 steam generator is obtained using the ATHOS3 code. The effective mass for modal analysis is calculated using the void fraction, enthalpy, and operating pressure information from ATHOS3 code result. With the effective mass distribution along the tube, natural frequency and mode shape is obtained using ANSYS code. Finally, stability ratios and real mean squared displacements for selected tubes of the APR1400 steam generator are computed. From these results, the current design of the APR1400 steam generator are examined.

In the engine room and the aft part areas of the ship, there exist so many tank structures contacting with fresh water or sea water or oil. If these structures exhibit excessive vibrations during the sea trials, it takes a lot of cost, time and effort to improve vibration situation because the reinforcement work requires emptying the fluid out of the tanks, additional welding and special painting. It is therefore very important to predict a precise vibration characteristics of the tank structures at the design stage, however it is not easy to estimate vibration characteristics of the structures because of difficulties for accurate evaluation of the added (or virtual) mass effect due to the fluid inside the tank. In this paper, numerical and experimental approaches have been performed to present same fundamental data necessary for anti-vibration design of tank structures contacting with fluid, by investigating vibration behaviors of rectangular tank structure for various water depths.
