  • Recently, balanced scorecard is widely used in the public sector as well as in the private sector. Balanced scorecard system of a particular hospital is a very useful tool in the sense that it shows various measures for the management including the traditional financial measures. However, since it does not show the impact of action items, managers have to analyze his potential decisions. On the other hand, a system dynamics model for the management of a hospital can be used to predict future management status. In this paper, a balanced scorecard system with a system dynamics model is developed for a small sized hospital, and the feasibility and applicability of the system have been tested. It turns out the combination of the balanced scorecard and system dynamics technique can be comprised each other. The balanced scorecard system can take advantage of the data forecasted by the system dynamics model including the implementation of action items taken today. On the other hand, the key performance indicators and action items from the balanced scorecard system provide guidelines the scope and direction of the system dynamics model. The additional efforts of developing a system dynamics model are well compensated by the additional colorful functionalities of the system. This paper also covers the future research areas for the combined system to be more effectively developed.

  • This paper presents an improved identification algorithm of active magnetic bearing rotor systems considering sensor and actuator dynamics. An AMB rotor system has both real and complex poles so that it is very hard to identify them together. In previous research, a linear transformation through a fictitious proportional feedback was used in order to shift the real poles close to the imaginary axis. However, the identification result highly depends on the fictitious feedback gain, and it is not easy to identify the additional dynamics including sensor and actuators at the same time. First, this paper discusses the necessity and a selection criterion of the fictitious feedback gain. An appropriate feedback gain minimizes dominant SVD(Singular Value Decomposition) error through maximizing rank deficiency. Second, more improvement in the identification is achieved through separating the common additional dynamics in all elements of frequency response matrix. The feasibility of the proposed identification algorithm is proved with two theoretical AMB rotor models. Finally, the proposed scheme is compared with previous identification methods using experimental data, and a great improvement in model quality and large amount of time saving can be achieved with the proposed method.

  • Stock market volatility largely depends on firms' value and growth opportunities. However, with the globalization of world economy, the effect of the synchronization in major countries is gaining its importance. Also, domestically, the business cycle and cash market of the country are additional factors needed to be considered. The main purpose of this research is to attest the application and usefulness of System Dynamics as a general stock market forecasting tool. Throughout this research, System Dynamics suggests a conceptual model for forecasting a KOSPI(Korea Composite Stock Price Index), taking the factors of the composite stock price indexes in traditional researches. In conclusion of this research, System Dynamics was proved to bean appropriate model for forecasting the volatility and direction of a stock market as a whole. With its timely adaptability, System Dynamic overcomes the limit of traditional statistic models.

  • Text has evolved along with the history of art as a means of communicating human intentions and emotions. In addition, text visualization artworks have been combined with the social form and contents of new media to produce social messages and related meanings. Recently, in text visualization artworks combined with digital media, communication forms with viewers are changing instantly and interactively, and viewers are actively participating in creating artworks by direct engagement. Interactive text visualization with additional viewer's interaction, generates external dynamics from text shapes and internal dynamics from embedded meanings of text. The purpose of this study is to propose a visual dynamics model to express the dynamics of text and to implement a text visualization system based on the model. It uses the deconstruction of the imaged text to create an interactive text visualization system that reacts to the gestures of the viewer in real time. Visual Transformation synchronized with the intentions of the viewer prevent the text from remaining in the interpretation of language symbols and extend the various meanings of the text. The visualized text in various forms shows visual dynamics that interpret the meaning according to the cultural background of the viewer.

  • A system dynamics project is going on for forecasting automobile market in Korea. The project is made up of three stages, and the first stage has been wrapped up. As the first attempt, most efforts have been focused on the sound foundation rather than the exact forecast. The model consists of three sectors; the supply sector, the demand sector, and the population sector. The supply sector is a simple stock and flow diagrams representing the supply capacities of all automobile types. The major effort is made on the demand sector and the population sector. The demands are divided into three categories; replacement demands, new demands, and additional demands. The model applies “one car per person" concept, and assumes there will be no additional demands for a while. The replacement demands are calculated based on a simple stock and flow diagram. The new demands are calculated via Bass models; each bass model represents a diffusion for each age group. The population is divided into 101 age groups (age 0 to age 100). The model has been calibrated with past 10 year data (1990 - 1999), and tested for the next two years (2000-2001). The results ware acceptable, although a fine tuning is required. Now the second stage is going on, and most of efforts are made how to incorporate the economic and cultural factors.

  • Redundant parallel manipulators have some advantages over the nonredundant parallel manipulators. It is important to determine how many additional branches should be introduced. This paper studies whether one or two additional branches should be added to a 3-DOF parallel manipulator by comparing the flexible deformation of a 3-DOF parallel manipulator with one additional branch and that with two additional branches. The kinematic and dynamic models of the redundant parallel manipulator are derived and the flexible deformation is investigated. The flexible deformation of the manipulators with one additional branch and two branches is simulated and compared. This paper is helpful for designers to design a redundantly actuated parallel manipulator.

  • This paper presents an efficient method which estimates the systems with unmodeled dynamics using D-L networks. This method is applied for estimating the system with unmodeled dynamics from only input-output information , so it can exclude additional procedure for system description and reduce the computational burden required for real-time estimation. Higher convergence speed is achieved in this manner in comparison with widely-used conventional methods.

  • Time Delay Controller(TDC) is a model following controller which uses input and output values and state variables to estimate additional quantity of dynamics due to external disturbances and/or model parameters variation at some past instant. TDC is very robust against parametric uncertainty whil it is not robust against unmodeled dynamics even showing instability. To solve this problem a stability anlysis is performed and a compensation technique using reduced order observer, Anti-Filtering Compensator(AFC), is proposed for a case in which the high order kinown dynamics is deliberately ignored. If the ignored dynamics causes instability of the TDC control system, AFC is shown to be indispensible fot a stable implementation of TDC.

  • This article deals with the transient analysis using multi-flexible body dynamics of a trailer vehicle, which is passing a bump on the flat road. In order to investigate the transient dynamic behavior of the trailer, we developed an equivalent finite element model for the trailer and a vehicle dynamic model for the truck using multi-body dynamics. The driving condition considered here is set as the trailer vehicle passes a bump on the flat road in 7km/h. And we investigate the time histories of vertical load and deflections on connecting points between the trailer and truck during the vehicle passes a bump. Due to the dynamic load resulted from the driving condition, additional stress concentrations are found in the trailer and the suspension connecting points between the trailer and rear axles along with kingpin.

  • A numerical modeling technique is proposed for computer simulations of high speed valve train dynamic terms in the valve spring reaction forces are calculated using linear vibration theory for given kinematic valve motions. Because the spring dynamics are analyzed before the time stepping integration, spring surge phenomena can be included without using additional computer time. In addition to that, steady state response of the valve dynamics can be obtained by just one cycle simulation. Consequently, valve train dynamics can be simulated very quickly without noticeable errors in accuracy. The experimental result prove the computer model developed here is accurate and also computationally efficient. The model is especially useful for cam profile optimizations.
