The accurate prediction of motion in waves of a marine vehicle is essential to assess the maximum sea state vs. operational requirements. This is particularly true for small crafts, such as Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASV). Two different numerical methods to predict motions of a SWATH-ASV are considered: an inviscid strip theory initially developed at MIT for catamarans and then adapted for SWATHs and new a hybrid strip theory, based on the numerical solution of the radiation forces by an unsteady viscous, non-linear free surface flow solver. Motion predictions obtained by the viscous flow method are critically discussed against those obtained by potential flow strip theory. Effects of viscosity are analyzed by comparison of sectional added mass and damping calculated at different frequencies and for different sections, RAOs and motions response in irregular waves at zero speed. Some relevant conclusions can be drawn from this study: influence of viscosity is definitely non negligible for SWATH vessels like the one presented: amplitude of the pitch and heave motions predicted at the resonance frequency differ of 20% respectively and 50%; in this respect, the hybrid method with fully non-linear, viscous free surface calculation of the radiation forces turns out to be a very valuable tool to improve the accuracy of traditional strip theories, without the burden of long computational times requested by fully viscous time domain three dimensional simulations.
A simple damper optimization method is proposed to find optimal damper allocation for shear buildings under both target added damping ratio and interstorey drift ratio (IDR). The damping coefficients of added dampers are considered as design variables. The cost, which is defined as the sum of damping coefficient of added dampers, is minimized under a target added damping ratio and the upper and the lower constraint of the design variables. In the first stage of proposed algorithm, Simulated Annealing, Nelder Mead and Differential Evolution numerical algorithms are used to solve the proposed optimization problem. The candidate optimal design obtained in the first stage is tested in terms of the IDRs using linear time history analyses for a design earthquake in the second stage. If all IDRs are below the allowable level, iteration of the algorithm is stopped; otherwise, the iteration continues increasing the target damping ratio. By this way, a structural response IDR is also taken into consideration using a snap-back test. In this study, the effects of the selection of upper limit for added dampers, the storey mass distribution and the storey stiffness distribution are all investigated in terms of damper distributions, cost function, added damping ratio and IDRs for 6-storey shear building models. The results of the proposed method are compared with two existing methods in the literature. Optimal designs are also compared with uniform designs according to both IDRs and added damping ratios. The numerical results show that the proposed damper optimization method is easy to apply and is efficient to find optimal damper distribution for a target damping ratio and allowable IDR value.

Experiments have carried out to investigate the effects of parameters, such as mass ratio of R141b-to-water, stirrer speed, brine inlet temperature, brine flowrate, and additives, on the performance of the cool storage system using R141b clathrate. The cool storage system in this experiment was composed of storage tank, refrigerator, and heater. The results show that the mass ratio of R141b-to-water, 1 : 3~1 : 3.5 gives the best performance and the stirring speed has optimum point as 600rpm. At this speed impeller Reynolds number is $1.01{\times}10^5$. The lower the inlet brine temperature and the highter the brine flowrate, the better performance. The addition of metal powder turned out to reduce the degree of supercooling. The supercooling reduction was proportional to the amount of the metal power. However when metal powder was added more than 0.1 wt%, there was no additional supercooling reduction. The surfactants shortened the time consumed for cool storage to the half of no surfactant added case.
The water wave interactions on any three-dimensional structure of arbitrary geometry can be calculated numerically through the use of source distribution or Green's function techniques. However, such a method can be computationally expensive. In the present study, the water wave interactions in floating circular cylinder arrays were investigated numerically using the eigenfunction expansion method with the three- dimensional potential theory to reduce the computational expense. The wave excitation force, added mass coefficient, radiation damping coefficient, and wave run-up are presented with the water wave interactions in an array of 5 or 9 cylinders. The effects of the number of cylinders and the spacing between them are examined because the water wave interactions in floating circular cylinder arrays are significantly dependent upon these.

The present study aims to identify the effects of the oblique inflow and vertical acceleration on a marine propeller's hydrodynamic force and moment. Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis is performed for a rotating propeller in open water conditions with heave motion after performing validation against experiment in straightforward conditions. The oblique inflow results in a linear increase of the off-axial component of the hydrodynamic force and moment rather than the axial one. Pitch and yaw moments due to the hull motion are dominated by the heave force and the moment arm of the propeller location. Additionally, the vertical acceleration leads to a linear augmentation of off-axial hydrodynamic force and moment, implying the added mass and moment of inertia. Notably, it is found that the off-axial hydrodynamic force and moment are dominated by the oblique inflow velocity rather than the acceleration.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain M was cultured in a molasses-containing media with repeated transplantations of the yeasts from one culture to another to adapt to molasses. After that only different amounts of phosphorous and nitrogen sources were added to the media. And then some variations during the culture time and the effects of consituents of cell mass on the functional activity and sensitivity of the cell were investigated. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. In the same culture condition of yeasts, the carbohydrates and trehaloses contents were more remarkably increased when small amounts of phosphate and nitrogen sources were added, then when alrge amounts were added, but yield percentage on assimilated sugars was lower. 2. The content of trehalose in yeast cells was reduced remarkably at the early stage in the culture, but this increased remarkably at later stage. When small amounts of nitrogen and phosphate were added to the culture medium, the amount of thehalose in the cells increased greasly. 3. The more protein content was present in the yeast cells, the smaller the carbohydrate and trehalose content, but more amino-N, RNA and moisture content were present in the cells. And in this case fermentability of the cells was stronger, but sugar tolerance was lower. 4. During the preservation period of compressed yeast cells at different temperature, the higher the temperature was, the more rapidly the amount of trehalose in the cells decreased. And in the cell where the amount of trehalose in the cells decreased. And in the cell where the amount of trehalose(carbohydrate) was large and the amount of protein was small, the amount of trehalose decreased at a slower rate during the preservation period.
This study aimed to analyze the effects of external load between male and female on angular velocity, moment, and absorbed energy of the lower-extremity joints during drop landing. The study subjects were 9 male($mass=70.82{\pm}4.64kg$, $height=1.71{\pm}0.04m$, $age=24.5{\pm}1.84years$), 9 female($mass=50.14{\pm}4.09kg$, $height=1.61{\pm}0.03m$, $age=23.6{\pm}2.62years$), without any serious musculoskeletal, coordination, balance, or joint/ligament problems for 1 year before the study. The angular velocity, flexion/extension and abduction/adduction moments, and absorbed energy of the lower-extremity joints were compared between the men and women during drop landing under 4 different conditions of external load(0%, 8%, 16%, and 24%) by using two-way repeated ANOVA(p < .05). The women landed with a greater peak angular velocity of the ankle joint, greater peak inversion moment, and lower peak hip-extension moment than the men did, under all 4 conditions. Additionally, the landing characteristics of the women were distinct from those of the men; the women showed a greater peak knee-adduction moment and greater absorbed energy of the knee joint. These differences indicate that anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) strain was greater in the women than in the men and therefore, women may be at a higher potential risk for noncontact injuries of the ACL with an increase in external load.

An analysis of convective boiling heat transfer for refrigerant mixtures is performed for an annular flow to investigate the degradation of the heat transfer rate. Annular flow is selected in this study because a great portion of the evaporator in the refrigeration and air conditioning system is known to be in the annular flow regime. Mass transfer effect due to composition difference between liquid and vapor is included in this analysis, which is considered to be one of driving forces for the mass transfer at the interface. Due to the concentration gradient at the interface the mass transfer is interfered, so is the evaporative heat transfer at the interface. The mass transfer resistance makes the interface temperature slightly higher and, as a result, the heat transfer coefficients decrease compared with those without mass transfer effects. The degradatioin of the heat transfer rate reaches its maximum at a certain composition. The composition difference between vapor core and vapor at the interface has a direct effect on the temperature difference between the vapor core and the interface and the degradation of the heat transfer rate. Correction factor $C_{F}$ for the mixture effects is added to the correlation for pure substances and the flow boiling heat transfer coefficients can be calculated using the modified equation.n.

Vertical pump are widely used owing to the fact that they occupy small floor space. In this type of pumps, however, the vibrational problems are very important, since, in many cases, they have less stiffness in comparison with later pumps. This study presents a simple solution method for calculating the natural frequencies and modes of vertical pumps. In this study, a model of a vertical pump was developed and the nondimensional parameters for the vibrational characteristics of it were determined. Added mass was calculated for the effects of water and the transfer matrix method was used.
Previous studies have suggested that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, predominantly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have several health benefits. However, their effect on changes in skeletal muscle mass and strength has not been established, owing to differences in study designs. This systematic review aimed to investigate the recent evidence regarding the role of dietary EPA and DHA in muscle mass changes and their association with muscle strength. Databases including PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for randomized controlled trials and single-arm interventions that investigated the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on skeletal muscle mass, strength, and body composition in adults aged 18 years and older. A total of 18,521 studies were retrieved from the databases and manual searches; 21 studies were quality assessed, and the findings were summarized. Studies were categorized into 3 main categories according to the type of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation: pure compounds such as oil tablets, formulated forms with protein, leucine, and vitamin D, and ingredients added to enteral nutrition support products. Overall, the majority of the study results appeared to indicate that omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for muscle health. However, meta-analysis was not conducted because of the heterogeneity of the study participants, evaluation method of muscle indices, and intervention periods among the studies. High-quality studies are required to validate our conclusions. However, this systematic review of the effects of EPA and DHA on skeletal muscle and body composition provides evidence that can be applied in both clinical and industrial settings.
