  • Finite element (FE) model based structural damage detection (SDD) methods play vital roles in effectively locating and quantifying structural damages. Among these methods, structural model updating should be conducted before SDD to obtain benchmark models of real structures. However, the characteristics of updating parameters are not reasonably considered in existing studies. Inspired by the l norm regularization, a novel anti-sparse representation method is proposed for structural model updating in this study. Based on sensitivity analysis, both frequencies and mode shapes are used to define an objective function at first. Then, by adding l norm penalty, an optimization problem is established for structural model updating. As a result, the optimization problem can be solved by the fast iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (FISTA). Moreover, comparative studies with classical regularization strategy, i.e. the l2 norm regularization method, are conducted as well. To intuitively illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a 2-DOF spring-mass model is taken as an example in numerical simulations. The updating results show that the proposed method has a good robustness to measurement noises. Finally, to further verify the applicability of the proposed method, a six-storey aluminum alloy frame is designed and fabricated in laboratory. The added mass on each storey is taken as updating parameter. The updating results provide a good agreement with the true values, which indicates that the proposed method can effectively update the model parameters with a high accuracy.

  • Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units have the advantages of their ability to provide storage and offloading capabilities which are not available in other types of floating production systems. In addition, FPSOs also provide a large deck area and substantial topsides payload capacity. They are in use in a variety of water depths and environments around the world. It is a good solution for offshore oil and gas development in fields where there is lack of an export pipeline system to shore. However due to their inherently high motions in waves, they are limited in the types of risers they can host. The Low Motion FPSO (LM-FPSO) is a novel design that is developed to maintain the advantages of the conventional FPSOs while offering significantly lower motion responses. The LM-FPSO design generally consists of a box-shape hull with large storage capacity, a free-hanging solid ballast tank (SBT) located certain distance below the hull keel, a few groups of tendons arranged to connect the SBT to the hull, a mooring system for station keeping, and a riser system. The addition of SBT to the floater results in a significant increase in heave, roll and pitch natural periods, mainly through the mass and added mass of the SBT, which significantly reduces motions in the wave frequency range. Model tests were performed at the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) in the fall of 2016. An analytical model of the basin model (MOM) was created in Orcaflex and calibrated against the basin-model. Good agreement is achieved between global performance results from MOM's predictions and basin model measurements. The model test measurements have further verified the superior motion response of LM-FPSO. In this paper, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the comparison and correlation of the MOM results with model test measurements. The verification of the superior motion response through model test measurements is also presented in this paper.

  • This paper proposes a method that minimizes the consumed energy by searching the optimal locations of the mass centers of links composing of a biped robot using Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm. Generally, in order to utilize optimization algorithms, the system model and design variables must be defined. Firstly, the proposed model is a 6-DOF biped robot composed of seven links, since many of the essential characteristics of the human walking motion can be captured with a seven-link planar biped walking in the saggital plane. Next, Fourth order polynomials are used for basis functions to approximate the walking gait. The coefficients of the fourth order polynomials are defined as design variables. In order to use the method generating the optimal gait trajectory by searching the locations of mass centers of links, three variables are added to the total number of design variables. Real-Coded GA is used for optimization algorithm by reason of many advantages. Simulations and the comparison of three methods to generate gait trajectories including the GCIPM were performed. They show that the proposed method can decrease the consumed energy remarkably and be applied during the design phase of a robot actually.

  • Considering a rigorously fluid-structure interaction, a method for an earthquake response analysis of a floating offshore structure subjected to vertical ground motion from a seaquake is developed. Mass, damping, stiffness, and hydrostatic stiffness matrices of the floating offshore structure are obtained from a finite-element model. The sea water is assumed to be a compressible, nonviscous, ideal fluid. Hydrodynamic pressure, which is applied to the structure, from the sea water is assessed using its finite elements and transmitting boundary. Considering the fluid-structure interaction, added mass and force from the hydrodynamic pressure is obtained, which will be combined with the numerical model for the structure. Hydrodynamic pressure in a free field subjected to vertical ground motion and due to harmonic vibration of a floating massless rigid circular plate are calculated and compared with analytical solutions for verification. Using the developed method, the earthquake responses of a floating offshore structure subjected to a vertical ground motion from the seaquake is obtained. It is concluded that the earthquake responses of a floating offshore structure to vertical ground motion is severely influenced by the compressibility of sea water.

  • Unlike structures in the air, the vibration analysis of a submerged or floating structure such as offshore structures or ships is possible only when the fluid-structure interaction is understood, as the whole or part of the structure is in contact with water. This paper introduces two methods to find natural frequency in consideration of fluid-structure interaction, direct coupled vibration analysis and fluid-structure modal coupled vibration analysis. The purpose of this study is to analyze the vibration characteristic of a submerged vehicle to obtain the anti-vibration design data, which could be used in the preliminary design stage. The underwater pressure hull of submerged vehicle is used as the model of this study. The F.E.M. model is meshed by shell and beam elements. Also, considering the inner hull weight, the mass element is distributed in the direction of hull length. Numerical calculations are accomplished by using the commercial B.E.M. code. The characteristics of natural frequency, mode shape and frequency-displacement response are analyzed.

  • This paper outlines the development of a computational model in order to analyze the dynamic behaviour of coupled fluid-structure systems such as a) liquid containers, b) a set of parallel or radial plates. In this work a hybrid fluid-solid element is developed, capable of simulating both membrane and bending effects of the plate. The structural mass and stiffness matrices are determined using exact integration of governing equations which are derived using a combination of classical plate theory and a finite element approach. The Bernoulli equation and velocity potential function are used to describe the liquid pressure applied on the solid-fluid element. An impermeability condition assures a permanent contact at the fluid-structure interface. Applications of this model are presented for both parallel and radial plates as well as fluid-filled rectangular reservoir. The effect of physical parameters on the dynamic behaviour of a coupled fluid-structure system is investigated. The results obtained using the presented approach for dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency are in agreement to those calculated using other theories and experiments.

  • High-speed marine vehicles can take advantage of aerodynamically supported platforms or air wings to increase maximum speed or transportation efficiency. However, this also results in increased complexity of boat dynamics, especially in the presence of waves and wind gusts. In this study, a mathematical model based on the fully unsteady aerodynamic extreme-ground-effect theory and the hydrodynamic added-mass strip theory is applied for simulating vertical-plane motions of a tunnel hull in a disturbed environment, as well as determining its steady states in calm conditions. Calculated responses of the boat to wind gusts and surface waves are demonstrated. The present model can be used as a supplementary method for preliminary estimations of performance of aerodynamically assisted marine craft.

  • Damage stability is generally very important as a part of rescue technique of damaged ship and also in connection with the requirements of MARPOL73/78[2]. Damage stability calculation program has been developed and suggest, which can be used on an onboard computer for any operating drafts. The program is based on lost buoyancy method for calculation of final drafts, and also based on added mass method for calculation of residual righting arm. The numerical method suggested by Hamamoto-Kim[6] is adopted for calculation of intact righting arm(GZ). The model experiments on damage stability are also carried out in a small tank with tanker model 2.385 meters long. The experimental results are compared with the calculations by the suggested method.
