  • The signal intelligence (SIGINT) technology is actively used for collecting various data, in a number of fields, including a military industry. In order to collect the signal information and data and to transmit/receive the collected data efficiently, the accurate angle-of-arrival (AOA) information is required and communication disturbance from the interference or jamming signal should be minimized. In this paper, we present the structure of an adaptive beam-forming satellite system based on the planar array antenna, for collecting and transmitting/receiving the signal information and data efficiently. The presented adaptive beam-forming system consists of an antenna in the form of a planar array, an AOA estimator based on the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm, an adaptive Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) interference canceler, a signal processing and D/B unit, and a transmission beamformer based on Minimum mean Square Error (MMSE). In addition, through the computer simulation, we evaluate and analyze the performance of the proposed system.

  • It has been known that the amplifiers for high power signal in satellite communication channels suffer from nonlinear distortions, which reduce the performance of the communication channel significantly. In order to compensate the nonlinear distortion, a new data predistortion method with the LMS algorithm is proposed in this paper, Whereas the previous approach handles this problem by assigning corresponding predistorter to each symbol for the case of 16-QAM, the proposed approach uses the same memory for the symbols, which have identical amplitudes, and predistors the input of high-power amplifiers by the amplitude and phase differences, resulting in better adaptive data predistorter with small number of digital memory (3 predistorters) and fast convergence rate. Superiority of the proposed approach in the paper is demonstrated by comparing it with the previous approach.

  • This paper proposes an efficient signal to noise ratio (SNR) estimation algorithm and its hardware implementation for adaptive transmission system using M-ary modulation scheme. In this paper, we present the implementation results of the proposed algorithm for the second generation digital video broadcasting via satellite (DVB-S2) system, and the proposed algorithm can be tailored to the other communication systems using adaptive transmissions. We built a look-up table (LUT) using the theoretical background of the received signal distribution, and by using this LUT we need just two comparators and a counter for the hardware implementation. For this reason, the hardware of the proposed scheme produces accurate estimation results even with extremely low complexity. The simulation results investigated in this paper reveal that the proposed method can produce estimation results within the specified SNR range in the DVB-S2 system, and it requires a few hundreds of samples for average estimation error of about 1 dB.

  • This paper discusses the application of fuzzy-ARTMAP neural network to compensate the nonlinearity of satellite communication channel. The fuzzy-ARTMAP is the class of ART(adaptive resonance theory) architectures designed fur supervised loaming. It has capabilities not fecund in other neural network approaches, that includes a small number of parameters, no requirements fur the choice of initial weights, automatic increase of hidden units, and capability of adding new data without retraining previously trained data. By a match tracking process with vigilance parameter, fuzzy-ARTMAP neural network achieves a minimax teaming rule that minimizes predictive error and maximizes generalization. Thus, the system automatically leans a minimal number of recognition categories, or hidden units, to meet accuracy criteria. As a input-converting process for implementing fuzzy-ARTMAP equalizer, the sigmoid function is chosen to convert actual channel output to the proper input values of fuzzy-ARTMAP. Simulation studies are performed over satellite nonlinear channels. QPSK signals with Gaussian noise are generated at random from Volterra model. The performance of proposed fuzzy-ARTMAP equalizer is compared with MLP equalizer.

  • In this paper a very brief review of historical development of optical science and technology in China is presented. More attention has been pain on Modem Optics, which developed since 1950s. The recent development of optical science and technology in following fields are introduced. 1. Optical engineering and instrumentation (tracking theodolites, high speed cameras, satellite laser ranging systems, satellite flying attitude control, cameras for remote sensing, astronomical optical instrument) 2. Applied optics (adaptive optics, optical metrology, infrared optics, optical processing, optical holography) 3. Laser science and technology (ultrashort pulse lasers, UV-X ray lasers, high power laser facilities and laser fusion, laser isotope separation) 4. Laser and nonlinear materials (rare earth elements doped laser glasses and crystals, tunable laser crystals, borate series and organic nonlinear crystals) 5. Optoelectronic science and technology (Optical communication, optical data storage, optical computing) The current situation and developing prospect of optical and optoelectronic industry in China are presented. Furthermore it points out that the optical industry could be developed vigorously only if products development capacity is enhanced and new products industrialization is heightened. The main research and education institutions in the optics field in China, as well as the Chinese Optical Society (COS) are introduced.

  • The major reason that reduces the performance of satellite communication channels is known as the nonlinearities of high power amplifiers(HPA's) which are usually modeled by memoryless nonlinear systems, in the channels. This paper proposes a nonlinear adaptive predistorter, which predistorts the input symbols such that the symbol passing through the nonlinear HPA preserves the desired constellation, and derives the region of convergence for the predistorter. The predistorter has capability of coping adaptively with any time-varying environment such as changes of operating points if HPA since the coefficients of the predistorter which has a form of truncated Tayler series are obtained by recursive optimization procedure utilizing QAM data sequence directely. Simulation results show that the proposed one with 16 QAM input has better performance than the conventional fixed predistorter with the same input.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive linearization method of Volterra nonlinear systems using DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform)and an LMS-type predistorter. In particular, the proposed wavelet transform-domain lineatization method leads to diagonalization of the input vector auto-correlation matrix which yields improvement of the convergence rate of the corresponding transform-domain LMS algorithm. Furthermore, the adaptive Volterra predistorter followed by a corresponding weakly Volterra nonlinear system(here. a TWT amplifier model in a satellite communication system) is utilized to compensate for the distortion in the output. Also,12-PSK and 4-QAM are applied as the input to the nonlinear system to be tested. Some simulation results show that the proposed linearization approach has better performance than DCT-based or conventional normalized LMS algorithms do.

  • Containing an Angle-of-Arrival(: AOA) estimation and interference suppression techniques, an adaptive beamformer is one of core techniques for the Signal Intelligence(: SIGINT) which collect various intelligence utilizing cutting edge devices including the radar and satellite. It generates a beam with the directivity in a corresponding direction, to efficiently receive a signal from the specific direction, using antenna array. In this paper, we present the received signal model including interference signals and noise, which can be applied to an input of the signal intelligence satellite system equipped with the AOA estimation and the interference cancellation techniques, and analysis the characteristics of various signals, which can be included in the proposed received signal model. This proposed signal model can be directly applied to the performance evaluation for a variety of beamforming techniques. Also, we verify the spectrum characteristic of the presented received signal model in the frequency domain through computer simulation examples.

  • GPS (global positioning system) is a popular system that provides location information by measuring arrival time difference at the receiver between several GPS satellite signals. GPS is widely used in commercial area as well as military systems. Reliable GPS signal reception is more important in the military applications such as guided missiles. However, since the carrier frequencies of the GPS signals are well known and the received power is extremely low, the GPS systems are vulnerable to intentional jamming attacks. To remove jammers while maintaining GPS signals at the received signals, a popular technique is an adaptive beam steering method based on array antenna. Among adaptive beam steering techniques, this paper considers MVDR (minimum variance distortionless response) algorithm, and proposes a new adaptive technique that preserves the received signals at desired directions, but removes the unknown jamming signals adaptively. The performance of the proposed method is verified through computer simulation.
