The adaptive reuse of 20th-century high-rise architecture poses important questions about the prevalence of authorized discourses in the heritage conservation field. Based on a two-year teaching experience at Tongji University about the adaptive reuse of the Metropolo Hotel (Palmer and Turner, 1934), an iconic historic high-rise building in the Shanghai Bund area, this paper will show the extent to which disciplinary and urban authorized heritage discourses are present in the development of design and representation strategies in adaptive reuse. Using discourse analysis as a method, this paper will make the argument that disciplinary discourses have a limited effect in the practice of adaptive reuse, which is perceived as a fundamentally creative activity. At the same time, the paper reveals how urban discourses have a much more lasting effect, confirming the intimate links between adaptive reuse and the wider phenomena of beautification and gentrification of high-rise listed areas.

The adaptive reuse of older buildings to housing for the elderly persons is a relatively new but growing phenomenon in the Western Societies. With regard to many tangible and intangible benefits, adaptive reuse can be a way to help older persons who choose "aging-in-place" in the "long-term" community. The exploratory case study indentifies changes in the stisfaction level of residents after relocation to an adaptive reuse elderly apartment in a rural community in the U.S. Data were collected using personal interviews with 17 pre-occupancy and 16 post-occupancy respondents. Findings described characteristics of respondents and dwelling, neighborhood, and overall satisfaction level changes. This exploratory study, one of few studies about adaptive reuse for housing for the elderly, suggests implications for futher studies.

In this study, we focused on 'Adaptive Reuse', which has the concepts of space reconstitution and social and cultural regeneration, so that previously constructed highrise buildings can accommodate various changes in modern society, and new spatial design was developed based on the characteristics of adaptive reuse. We sought to present the concept and direction, detailed strategies, and architectural response elements of space reconstitution for the purpose of realizing the typical spatial reorganization required by modern society and seeking directions and methods of space reconstitution that can be applied to future society. The purpose is to do so.

This study intends to suggest the improvements for the legal systems related to the conservation of mountain ridge areas. The 4 legal systems directly related to the conservation of mountain ridge areas are reviewed and the current conditions of adaptive reuse of mountain areas and destroy cases in Hwasung are examined. For solving the problems on the basis of the analysis, three proposals for the improvement on legal systems are suggested. First, the integration of present dual legal systems related to adaptive reuse of mountain areas on the assumption that the related criteria and provisions should be amended, second, activation of the legal systems such as natural landscape district and natural landscape review to make up for the laws related to adaptive reuse of mountain areas, third, the enactment and application of the ordinances related with the 'mountain area management law'.

지속가능한 도시재생과 주거환경개선을 위한 방안으로 적응적 재사용과 리모델링에 대한 관심과 필요성이 증가하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 국내의 적응적 재사용을 위한 단독주택 리모델링 방법론에 있어서의 시사점을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 최근 단독주택의 리모델링이 활발히 진행되고 있는 부산시의 단독주택지인 '구포새뜰마을'과 '해리단길'을 대상으로 적응적 재사용을 위한 단독주택 리모델링에 대한 이론적 고찰과 사례분석을 진행하였다. 연구를 통하여 도출된 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 공공에 의해 주민 공간 및 시설로 리모델링된 건축물은 적극적인 주민참여와 지속적인 유지관리 방안이 필요하다. 둘째, 민간에 의해 상업용도로 전용된 단독주택지의 건축물은 주거 및 상업용도의 상생이 필요하다. 셋째, 단독주택지 전체 차원에서 가로 및 건축물 리모델링의 계획 및 설계에 관한 가이드라인이 필요하다.

The transition from manufacturing to service-based economies in highly developed societies during the post-industrial period resulted in the decline of the industrial landscape, leaving it abandoned or underutilized. In pursuit of revitalizing the obsolete industrial space, innovative design techniques based on adaptive reuse are applied to retrofit modern functions to create a new cultural space and preserve the historical, symbolic, and cultural importance of the abandoned industrial facilities. Design considerations based on facade redesign have proven to be one of the most adopted techniques that can help in recreating a new function for the vacant industrial buildings and integrating them into the present-day urban fabric. This paper examines the facade renovation elements used for the adaptive reuse of 15 abandoned industrial buildings presently used as multi-purpose facilities in South Korea. Through a questionnaire survey, this study analyzes the respondents' preference for different facade renovation elements in the 15 sites according to age and gender. The study found that both genders showed similar preference patterns between most elements. But on some elements, females were keener and expressed a stronger opinion than males. There were much more females than males who perceived color and material as the most important exterior elements. The findings of this study can be used for the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings according to user preferences for different facade renovation elements.

셀룰러 네트워크 내에서 cellular 링크와 무선 자원을 공유하는 device-to-device(D2D) 링크는 자신이 속한 셀룰러 네트워크에 심각한 간섭을 줄 가능성이 높기 때문에 그것을 방지하기 위해서는 무선 자원 할당의 최적화가 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 D2D 링크가 자신의 간섭을 최소화하면서 효율적으로 cellular 링크와 공존하기 위해서 subset reuse 방법을 기반으로 하는 자원 할당 기법에 대해 제안한다. Cellular 링크와 D2D 링크 주파수 자원 할당의 효율성을 높이기 위하여 셀 상황에 따라 가변적인 subset 크기를 가지는 group-wise subset reuse 방법을 제안한다. 또한, cellular 링크가 같은 주파수 대역을 사용하는 D2D 전송에 의해 간섭을 받는 경우, D2D 링크의 power를 최적화하여 cellular 링크로의 간섭을 최소화하게 된다. 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 결과를 통하여 link SINR에서 성능 이득을 가지며, local traffic이 증가할수록 전체 cell throughput이 높아짐을 보였다.

최근 동적인 환경에서 발생하는 다양한 문제를 스스로 해결할 수 있는 자가 적응 시스템에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 자가 적응 시스템에서 시스템이 문제를 스스로 인식하고 자가 적응할 수 있도록 요구사항을 설계하는 과정은 필수적이며, 만약 기존의 적응 전략들을 재사용하여 자가 적응 시스템을 설계한다면 소요되는 시간 및 비용을 절감할 수 있다. 따라서 이 논문은 새로운 자가 적응 시스템 개발 시 기존의 자가 적응 시스템으로부터 재사용 가능한 적응 전략을 추출하는 시스템을 제안한다. 이를 위하여 자가 적응 요소를 지식화하여 적응 전략 온톨로지 및 타깃 시스템 온톨로지를 정의하고, 이러한 온톨로지를 기반으로 재사용 가능한 적응 전략을 추출하는 기법을 기술한다. 또한, 이 논문은 제안 시스템을 구현하고 추출된 적응 전략에 대한 재사용률을 측정함으로써 제안 시스템을 비교 평가한다. 평가 결과, 제안 시스템은 추출된 적응 전략이 정확히 동작함을 보이며 제안 시스템의 추출 기법은 기존의 재사용 기법보다 높은 재사용률을 보인다.

When the castle of the city was destructed from 1911 through 1915 in Cheongju, the city's spatial structure was reorganized and "Han-ok Housing", a dwelling site filled with Korean traditional houses, was newly formed around the former castle site. These days, the Han-ok housing in Seoun-dong, Cheongju in which elderly couples and senior citizens live is enclosed by modernized roads and three or four-story buildings, leaving the housing as an isolated island in the city block. Nonetheless, the Han-ok housing not only plays an important role in sustaining the historic and local identity of the city, but also offers environmental benefits in terms of daylighting and ventilation. The purpose of this study is to reorganize the housing suitable for those who currently live and recreate it by adding new functionality. Consequently, three strategies are established; the conservation of existing building through the improvement of existing facilities; the conversion of vacant buildings into a new use; and the creation of the urban mid-rise Han-ok housing at street sides. The first strategy has a significance in that the traditional building's single wing plan, small room sizes and lack of storages now cause great inconvenience for current life style. The second strategy also promotes the practical use of abandoned buildings through alterations and additions. Finally, the creation of the urban mid-rise Han-ok housing that is accomplished by the combination of reinforced concrete and wooden structure interacts with or respond to the city's development. As a result, this study for the adaptive reuse of Han-ok housing proves how the traditional properties can be maintained in a careful manner and how its creative reuse can be achieved.

For mobile wireless systems with full frequency reuse, co-channel interference near the cell coverage boundaries has a significant impact on the signal reception performance. This paper addresses an approach to efficiently mitigate the effect of downlink co-channel interference when multi-antenna terminals are used in cellular environments, by proposing a signal detection strategy combined with a system-level coordination for dynamic frequency reuse. We demonstrate the utilization of multi-antennas to perform spatial demultiplexing of both the desired signal and interfering signals from adjacent cells results in significant improvement of spectral efficiency compared to the maximal ratio combining (MRC) performance, especially when an appropriate frequency reuse based on the traffic loading condition is coordinated among cells. Both analytic expressions for the capacity and experimental results using the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) are used to confirm the performance gain. The robustness of the proposed scheme against varying operational conditions such as the channel estimation error and shadowing effects are also verified by simulation results.
