In this paper, an intelligent sliding-mode position controller (ISMC) for achieving favorable decoupling control and high precision position tracking performance of permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) servo drives is proposed. The intelligent position controller consists of a sliding-mode position controller (SMC) in the position feed-back loop in addition to an on-line trained fuzzy-neural-network model-following controller (FNNMFC) in the feedforward loop. The intelligent position controller combines the merits of the SMC with robust characteristics and the FNNMFC with on-line learning ability for periodic command tracking of a PMSM servo drive. The theoretical analyses of the sliding-mode position controller are described with a second order switching surface (PID) which is insensitive to parameter uncertainties and external load disturbances. To realize high dynamic performance in disturbance rejection and tracking characteristics, an on-line trained FNNMFC is proposed. The connective weights and membership functions of the FNNMFC are trained on-line according to the model-following error between the outputs of the reference model and the PMSM servo drive system. The FNNMFC generates an adaptive control signal which is added to the SMC output to attain robust model-following characteristics under different operating conditions regardless of parameter uncertainties and load disturbances. A computer simulation is developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed intelligent sliding mode position controller. The results confirm that the proposed ISMC grants robust performance and precise response to the reference model regardless of load disturbances and PMSM parameter uncertainties.

This paper presents a neural net based nonlinear adaptive controller for an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). AUV's dynamics are highly nonlinear and their hydrodynamic coefficients vary with different operational conditions, so it is necessary for the high performance control system of an AUV to have the capacities of learning and adapting to the change of the AUV's dynamics. In this paper a linearly parameterized neural network is used to approximate the uncertainties of the AUV's dynamics, and a sliding mode control is introduced to attenuate the effects of the neural network's reconstruction errors and the disturbances of AUV's dynamics. The presented controller is consist of three parallel schemes; linear feedback control, sliding mode control and neural network. Lyapunov theory is used to guarantee the asymptotic convergence of trajectory tracking errors and the neural network's weights errors. Numerical simulations for motion control of an AUV are performed to illustrate to effectiveness of the proposed techniques.
The construction of an experimental nonlinear structural model with little cost and unlimited repeatability for vibration control study represents a challenging task, especially for material nonlinearity. This paper reports the design, analysis and vibration control of a nonlinear structural experiment platform with adjustable hinges. In our approach, magnetorheological rotary brakes are substituted for the joints of a frame structure to simulate the nonlinear material behaviors of plastic hinges. For vibration control, a separate magnetorheological damper was employed to provide semi-active damping force to the nonlinear structure. A dynamic neural network was designed as a state observer to enable the feedback based semi-active vibration control. Based on the dynamic neural network observer, an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode based output control was developed for the magnetorheological damper to suppress the vibrations of the structure. The performance of the intelligent control algorithm was studied by subjecting the structure to shake table experiments. Experimental results show that the magnetorheological rotary brake can simulate the nonlinearity of the structural model with good repeatability. Moreover, different nonlinear behaviors can be achieved by controlling the input voltage of magnetorheological rotary damper. Different levels of nonlinearity in the vibration response of the structure can be achieved with the above adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control algorithm using a dynamic neural network observer.

In this paper, the position tracking control problem of the servo system with nonlinear dynamic friction is issued. The nonlinear dynamic friction contains a directly immeasurable friction state variable and the uncertainty caused by incomplete parameter modeling and its variations. In order to provide the efficient solution to these control problems, we propose the composite control scheme, which consists of the robust friction state observer, the FNN approximator and the approximation error estimator with sliding mode control. In first, the sliding mode controller and the robust friction state observer is designed to estimate the unknown internal state of the LuGre friction model. Next, the FNN estimator is adopted to approximate the unknown lumped friction uncertainty. Finally, the adaptive approximation error estimator is designed to compensate the approximation error of the FNN estimator. Some simulations and experiments on the servo system assembled with ball-screw and DC servo motor are presented. Results show the remarkable performance of the proposed control scheme. The robust friction state observer can successfully identify immeasurable friction state and the FNN estimator and adaptive approximation error estimator give the robustness to the proposed control scheme against the uncertainty of the friction parameters.
This study deals with an on-line software fault detection, localization, and system reconfiguration method for electrical system drives composed of three-phase AC/DC/AC converters and three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drives. Current sensor failure (outage), speed/position sensor loss (disconnection), and damaged DC-link voltage sensor are considered faults. The occurrence of these faults in PMSM drive systems degrades system performance and affects the safety, maintenance, and service continuity of the electrical system drives. The proposed method is based on the monitoring signals of "abc" currents, DC-link voltage, and rotor speed/position using a measurement chain. The listed signals are analyzed and evaluated with the generated residuals and threshold values obtained from a Sliding Mode Current-Speed-DC-link Voltage Observer (SMCSVO) to acquire an on-line fault decision. The novelty of the method is the faults diagnosis algorithm that combines the use of SMCSVO and adaptive thresholds; thus, the number of false alarms is reduced, and the reliability and robustness of the fault detection system are guaranteed. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm's performance is experimentally analyzed and tested in real time using a dSPACE DS 1104 digital signal processor board.

This paper proposes a new nonlinear adaptive guidance law. Fourth order state equation for integrated guidance and control loop is formulated considering target uncertainties and control loop dynamics. The state equation is further changed into the normal form by nonlinear coordinate transformation. An adaptive nonlinear guidance law is proposed to compensate for the uncertainties In both target acceleration and control loop dynamics. The proposed law adopts the sliding mode control approach with adaptation fer unknown bound of uncertainties. The present approach can effectively solve the existing guidance problem of target maneuver and the limited performance of control loop. We provide the stability analyses and demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme through simulations.

In this paper, we propose direct and indirect adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control approaches for a class of nonaffine nonlinear systems. In the direct case, we use the implicit function theory to prove the existence of an ideal implicit feedback linearization controller, and hence approximate it to attain the desired performances. In the indirect case, we exploit the linear structure of a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy system with constant conclusion to establish an affine-in-control model, and therefore design an indirect adaptive fuzzy controller. In both cases, the adaptation laws of the adjustable parameters are deduced from the stability analysis, in the sense of Lyapunov, to get a more accurate approximation level. In addition to their robustness, the design of the proposed approaches does not require the upper bounds of both external disturbances and approximation errors. To show the efficiency of the proposed controllers, a simulation example is presented.

In this paper, we propose a robust adaptive backstepping control of induction motors with uncertainties using nonlinear disturbance observer(NDO). The proposed NDO is applied to estimate the time-varying lumped uncertainty which are derived from unknown motor parameters and load torque, but NDO error does not converge to zero since the derivate of lumped uncertainty is not zero. Then the fuzzy neural network(FNN) is presented to estimate the NDO error such that the rotor speed to converge to a small neighborhood of the desired trajectory. Rotor flux and inverse time constant are estimated by the sliding mode adaptive flux observer. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
This paper considers a decentralized multiple faults detection and isolation (FDI) scheme for reconfigurable manipulators. Inspired by their modularization property, a global sliding mode (GSM) based stable adaptive fuzzy decentralized controller is investigated for the system in fault free, while for the system suffering from multiple faults (actuator fault and sensor fault), the decentralized sliding mode observer (DSMO) is employed to detect their occurrence. Hereafter, the time and location of faults can be determined by a fault isolation scheme via a bank of DSMOs. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed schemes in controlling, detecting and isolating faults is illustrated by the simulations of two 3-DOF reconfigurable manipulators with different configurations successfully.
The sliding mode control in an effective method to eatablish robustness against parameter variation and disturbance. But. In sliding mode strategy, the control function is discontinuous on the hyperplane. However the discontinuous change in control structure caves the controller input to chaffer and gives non-zero steady state error. Consequently, a multiloop feedback control system supplemented by a complelmentary controller is used to improved the drive performence of a DC servo motor and reduce sensitivity to parameter variation, nonlinear effects, and other disturbances.
