In B-scan data measured by a pulse-type monostatic borehole radar, target signatures are seriously obscured by two clutters that differ in orientation and intensity. The primary clutter appears as a nearly constant time delay, which is caused by internal ringing between antenna and transceiver in the radar system. The secondary clutter occurs as an oblique time delay due to the guided borehole wave along the logging cable of the radar antenna. This issue led us to perform adaptive filtering processing for orientation-based clutter removal. This letter describes adaptive filtering processing consisting of a combination of edge detection, data rotation, and eigenimage filtering. We show that the hyperbolic signatures of a dormant air-filled tunnel target can be more distinctly enhanced by applying the proposed approach to the B-scan data, which are measured in a well-suited test site for underground tunnel detection.

Speckle noise reduction for ultrasound CT image using morphological adaptive median filtering based on edge preservation is presented in this paper. Speckle noise is multiplicative feature and causes ultrasound image to degrade widely from transducer. An input image is classified into edge region and homogeneous region in preprocessing. The speckle is reduced by morphological operation on the 2D gray scale by using convolution and correlation, and edges are preserved. The adaptive median is processed to reduce an impulse noise to preserve edges. As the result, MAM of the proposed method enhances the image to about 10% in comparison with Winner filter by Edge Preservation Index and PSNR, and 10% to only adaptive median filtering.

In mechatronic systems using electric signals to drive control systems, driving signals including the frequency band of the unwanted signals, such as resonant frequencies and noise frequencies, can affect the accuracy of the controlled system and can cause serious damage to the system due to the resonance phenomenon of the mechatronic system. An LOS (Line of Sight) control unit is used to automatically rotate the gimbal system with a video imaging system generally mounted on modern aerial vehicles. However, it still suffers from natural frequency variation problems due to variations of operational temperature. To prevent degradation in performance, this paper proposes an adaptive filtering technique based on real-time noise analysis and adaptive notch-filtering for LOS control systems, and verifies how our proposed method maintains the LOS stabilization performance. Additionally, this filtering technique can be applied to the image noise filtering of the video imaging system. It is designed to reduce image noises generated by switching circuits or power sources. The details of design procedures of the proposed filtering technique and the experiments for the performance verification are described in this paper.

This paper presents lattice structure of bilinear filter and the conversion equations from lattice parameters to direct-form parameters. Billnear models are attractive for adaptive filtering applications because they can approximate a large class of nonlinear systems adequately, and usually with considerable parsimony in the number of coefficients required. The lattice filter formulation transforms the nonlinear filtering problem into an equivalent multichannel linear filtering problem and then uses multichannel lattice filtering algorithms to solve the nonlinear filtering problem. The lattice filters perform a Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization of the input data and have very good easily extended to more general nonlinear output feedback structures.
Adaptive template filtering has been proposed recently for enhancement of signal-to-noise ratio without loss of resolution. In the adaptive template filtering, an optimal template among multiple templates is selected, then linear least square error filtering based on the template is applied in vowel by vowel basis. In some magnetic resonance imaging, where the distribution of gray level has relatively small dynamic range, e.g., $T_1$ imaging, however, artificial stair-like artifact is observed at near edges. This is partially due to the edge enhancement effect in such yokels that contain multiple compounds at the boundaries of tissues. The gray levels of these yokels become similar gray levels of near dominant vowels that contain single compound by the adaptive filtering, which enlarges edge discontinuities. In this paper, we propose a technique to eliminate such artifact by identifying those yokels that contain multiple compounds and assigning the largest template for them. Filtered images with the proposed technique show substantial visual enhancement at the edges without degradation of peak signal-to-noise ratio compared to the original adaptive template filtering for both magnetic resonance images and phantom images.

Differential privacy has broadly applied to statistical analysis, and its mainly objective is to ensure the tradeoff between the utility of noise data and the privacy preserving of individual's sensitive information. However, an individual could not achieve expected data utility under differential privacy mechanisms, since the adding noise is random. To this end, we proposed an adaptive Gaussian mechanism based on expected data utility under conditional filtering noise. Firstly, this paper made conditional filtering for Gaussian mechanism noise. Secondly, we defined the expected data utility according to the absolute value of relative error. Finally, we presented an adaptive Gaussian mechanism by combining expected data utility with conditional filtering noise. Through comparative analysis, the adaptive Gaussian mechanism satisfies differential privacy and achieves expected data utility for giving any privacy budget. Furthermore, our scheme is easy extend to engineering implementation.
In this paper, we employ the adaptive comb filtering for effective noise reduction in mobile communication environment. Adaptive comb filtering is a well-known method for noise reduction, but requires correct pitch period and must be applied just in voiced speech frames. To satisfy these requirements we use two kinds of information extracted from speech packets, one of which is the pitch period information measured precisely by a speech coder and the other is the frame rate information related to a decision on speech or silence frame. Experiments on speech recognition system confirm the efficiency of this method. Feature parameters employing this method give superior performance in noise environment to those extracted directly from output speech.

In this paper, we propose a noise estimation method for noise reduction. It is based on block and pixel-based noise estimation. We assume that an input image is contaminated by the additive white Gaussian noise. Thus, we use an adaptive Gaussian filter and estimate the amount of noise. It computes the standard deviation of each block and estimation is performed on pixel-based operation. The proposed algorithm divides an input image into blocks. This method calculates the standard deviation of each block and finds the minimum standard deviation block. The block in flat region shows well noise and filtering effects. Blocks which have similar standard deviation are selected as test blocks. These pixels are filtered by adaptive Gaussian filtering. Then, the amount of noise is calculated by the standard deviation of the differences between noisy and filtered blocks. Experimental results show that our proposed estimation method has better results than those by existing estimation methods.

This is partially due to edge enhancement effect in such voxels that contain multiple compounds at the boundaries of tissues. The gray levels of these voxels tend to change those of near voxels that contain single compound by the adaptive filtering, which exaggerate edge discontinuities.
