A Joint Topology Discovery and Routing Protocol for Self-Organizing Hierarchical Ad Hoc Networks (자율구성 계층구조 애드혹 네트워크를 위한 상호 연동방식의 토폴로지 탐색 및 라우팅 프로토콜)

  • Self-organizing hierarchical ad hoc network (SOHAN) is a new ad-hoc network architecture designed to improve the scalability properties of conventional 'flat' ad hoc networks. This network architecture consists of three tiers of ad-hoc nodes, i.e.. access points, forwarding nodes and mobile nodes. This paper presents a topology discovery and routing protocol for the self-organization of SOHAN. We propose a cross-layer path metric based on link quality and MAC delay which plays a key role in producing an optimal cluster-based hierarchical topology with high throughput capacity. The topology discovery protocol provides the basis for routing which takes place in layer 2.5 using MAC addresses. The routing protocol is based on AODV with appropriate modifications to take advantage of the hierarchical topology and interact with the discovery protocol. Simulation results are presented which show the improved performance as well as scalability properties of SOHAN in terms of through-put capacity, end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio and control overhead.

A study on the network coding enabled cooperative MAC protocol at Ad Hoc networks (네트워크 코딩 기능을 갖춘 협력통신용 MAC 프로토콜에 관한 연구)

  • Until now, much research on cooperative communications to increase system throughput at Ad Hoc networks has been provided. In this paper, in order to enhance system throughput much more at Ad Hoc networks, a network coding-enabled new MAC protocol, called NC-MAC protocol, is proposed and its performance is evaluated with a mathematical approach. Numerical results show that this scheme provides conspicuously enhanced system throughput compared to DCF scheme, and more increased system throughput by 48% than rDCF and CO-MAC schemes.

Power Control based MAC Protocol for Interference Mitigation in an Ad Hoc Network with Directional Antennas (지향성 안테나를 사용하는 Ad Hoc 네트워크에서 간섭완화를 위한 전력제어기반 접근제어프로토콜)

  • Directional antennas have been used in Ad Hoc networks, significantly improving the spatial reuse of the networks. However, the extended transmission range causes collisions at the receivers of neighbors, which prevents full exploitation of the potential of the directional antenna. In this paper, we propose a new power control MAC protocol for a directional antenna. For this protocol, we propose a method to detect a set of interference nodes in the neighbors of a receiver. We then use a power control algorithm to calculate the minimum transmission power and send data. Simulation results demonstrate that this protocol increases the network performance and reduces energy consumption.

  • Because of MANET's dynamic characteristic, the hidden node problem can happen. Thus it must use with distributed channel access. In Ad hoc networks, carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance(CSMA/CA) is one of the most widely used medium access control(MAC) schemes for asynchronous data traffics. However, CSMA/CA could not guarantee the quality of multimedia traffics. CSMA is a contention based protocol. Therefor once a node gets a channel, it can momopolze. Thus the fairness problem with channel starvation will happen. We will propose a new MAC protocol to guarantee QoS for multimedia data in ad hoc networks.

  • A ship ad-hoc network (SANET) can provide ships with diverse multimedia services by replacing expensive satellite communications. While ITU-R M. 1842-1, standards for maritime VHF band digital communications, can be used as the specifications of physical layer for SANETs, no standards are specified for higher layers of SANETs. In this paper, we propose a ship ad-hoc communication (SAC) protocol for SANETs, based on medium access control (MAC) and routing protocols for terrestrial ad-hoc networks. SAC protocol is a cross-layer protocol which combines MAC and routing into one algorithm and considers maritime environments, including the existence of neighboring ships, the possibility of routing to a destination, and changing the communication mode in case of VHF channel failure.

Design and Implementation of MAC Protocol for Underwater Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (수중 모바일 애드 혹 네트워크를 위한 MAC 프로토콜 설계 및 구현)

  • In this paper, we propose a MAC(Media Access Control) protocol based on flexible RWT(RTS Waiting Time) for underwater mobile ad-hoc networks with a three-way handshaking mechanism. This protocol can solve a problem of collision between RTS(Request-To-Send) and CTS(Clear-To-Send) packets in existing MACA(Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) protocol. This proposed MAC protocol is also an effective protocol which can apply to underwater mobile ad-hoc networks in a real field by using implementable technologies. We set flexible RTS Waiting Time called RWT, considering various characteristics of underwater environment. It is possible to support variable network size according to node mobility. Finally, we conduct a performance evaluation between proposed MAC protocol and existing MACA based MAC protocol through practical implementation and experiment. As a result, we verify the superiority of our proposed MAC protocol in terms of throughput, packet drop rate, average transmission time, energy consumption and channel utilization.

An Effective Transmission for Vice Traffic in UWB Mobile Ad Hoc Network (UWB 전술망에서의 효과적인 음성 데이터 전송)

  • In this paper, we propose a transmission scheme of MAC protocol that enables secure voice communications by exploiting the wide spectrum and low signal strength characteristics of the ultra wide band technology. In addition, it also supports high level of terminal mobility by deploying mobile ad hoc network schemes. While most of existing UWB MAC protocols are operated as a synchronous mode, the proposed scheme operates in an asynchronous mode for supporting high mobility and sends voice packets without RTS/CTS control packets for efficient voice traffic transmission without retransmission. With simulation program, we prove that the proposed scheme satisfies the required voice quality and packet delivery time.

  • CSMA/CA를 기반으로 하고 있는 802.11 MAC 프로토콜에서는 RTS/CTS를 이용한 reservation 기법으로 medium을 공유하고 있다. 하지만 이러한 기법은 모든 노드의 송/수신 범위가 같을 때만 유효하다. 현실적으로 송/수신기와 안테나 특성, shading 효과 등으로 인하여 노드의 송/수신 범위가 달라지기 때문에 비대칭 링크가 발생하고, 이 경우 데이터 충돌이 발생할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 환경하에서 MAC 계층 패킷의 층돌을 방지하기 위해 BTS(Block-to-Send) 패킷을 도입하여 비대칭 링크 노드의 데이터 전송을 막는 기법을 제안한다.

  • 최근의 컴퓨터 네트워킹 환경에서 무선 멀티미디어 응용 서비스에 대한 사용자의 요구는 날로 증가하고 있다. 그러므로 사용자에게 원활한 서비스를 제공위해서 QoS 보장을 위한 무선 네트워크 프로토콜의 설계는 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 무선 인터넷에서 QoS를 보장하기 위한 표준인 IEEE 802.11e[1]의 문제점들을 분석하고, Multi-Hop Ad Hoc Network에서 성능 향상을 위하여 Single-channel Jamming 신호를 기반으로 한 SJMAC(Sing1e-channel Jamming MAC) 프로토콜을 설계하고, NS2 모듈을 구현한 후에 성능 평가를 하였다. 기존 IEEE 802.11e과의 성능 비교를 위하여 NS2 (Network Simulator2)[2]에 SJMAC 모듈을 추가하여 제안된 프로토콜의 성능을 검증한다.
