  • Quinolone derivatives have been used as antibacterial agents. In this work, the competitive C-and O-acylation reaction of 3,4-dichloroacetophenone, as a model study for the synthesis of quinolone intermediate, is studied. The effects of various bases, solvents and the leaving groups of acylating agents on the ratio of C-versus O-acylation of 3,4-dichloroacetophenone are elucidated by means of employing ethylchloroformate, ethylphenylcarbonate and diethylcarbonate as acylating agents. In aprotic solvents, C-acylation reactions occur more predominantly as the size of metal ions composing bases becomes smaller. Regarding the effects of leaving groups, it is shown that C-acylation product is increased as the ability of leaving groups of acylating agents decreases. The ratio of C/O-acylation is also observed to be increased as the polarity of solvents decreases.

  • These N-acyl amino acid surfactants is normally produced by reaction of acid anhydride with sodium ${\ell}-glutamate$ hydrolysates under Schotten-Baumann condition i.e., in alkaline aqueous medium. To avoid using fatty acid chlorides, acylations were also carried out with the fatty acids themselves or with their methyl esters, but unfortunately these methods cannot be used in practice, dodecenyl succinic anhydride, was to be studied for their suitability as acylating agents the production if acylated glutamine hydrolysates. The surface activities including surface tension forming power, forming stability and emulsifying power were measured. The experimental results revealed that the products have a good emulsifying power. Thus, there derivatives will be expected to be used an emulsifying agent for O/W type cosmetic emulsion.

  • The chelating agent with $\beta$-diketo funtional group, 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-acyl-pyrazolone-5-one, has been used in separating and extracting radionuclides in a waste solution. The derivatives of this pyrazolone compound, prepared by different acyl groups, were synthesized and examined to figure out the extracting ability for Uranium (VI) and Zirconium (IV). The product prepared with succinic anhydride, called succinyl pyrazolone, showed excellent extraction for uranium (VI) in a chloroform solvent system. This result indicates that acyl pyrazolones having carboxylic acid group as a functional group forming $\beta$-diketo functionality are very selective for uranium (VI) and generally other metal ions with high valency.
