  • Fault diagnosis problem is currently a subject of extensive research in the control field. Although there are several works on the fault detection and isolation observers and the residual generators, those are con- cerned with only the detection of actuator failures or sensor failures. So, the perfect detection and isolation for the actuator and sensor failures is strongly required in the field of the practical applications. In this paper, a strategy of fault diagnosis using multiple proportional integral (PI) observers including the magnitude of actuator failures is provided. It is shown that actuator failures are detected and isolated perfectly by monitoring the integrated error between actual output and estimated output by a PI observer. Also in presence of complex actuator and sensor failures, these failures are detected and isolated by multiple PI observers.

  • In normal robot control systems without any actuator failures, it is assumed that actuator torque coefficients applied at each joint have normally 1's all the time. However, it is more practical that actuator torque coefficients applied at each joint are nonlinear time-varying. In other words, it has to be considered that actuators equipped at joints may fail due to hardware or software faults. In this work, actuator torque coefficients are assumed to have non-zero values at all joints. In the case of an actuator torque coefficient which has a zero value at a joint, it means the complete loss of torque on the joint. This paper doesn't deal with the case. As factors of performance degradation of robots, both actuator failures and uncertainties are considered in this paper at the same time. This paper proposes a robust adaptive fault-tolerant control scheme to maintain the required performance and achieve task completion for robot manipulators with performance degradation due to actuator failures and uncertainties. Simulation results are shown to verify the fault tolerance and robustness of the Proposed control scheme.

  • This paper is concerned with the reliable $H_{\infty}$ controller design problem for uncertain linear systems against actuator failures. In the design, the $H_{\infty}$ performance of the closed-loop system is optimized during normal operation(without failures) while the system satisfies a prescribed $H_{\infty}$ performance level in the case of actuator failures. Single and parameter-dependent Lyapunov function approaches are applied in designing suboptimal reliable $H_{\infty}$ controllers. Simulation studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design procedures.

  • This paper focuses on the problem of guaranteed cost control for a class of uncertain linear delay systems with actuator failures. When actuators suffer "serious failure" the never failed actuators can not stabilize the system, based on switching strategy of average dwell time method, under the condition that activation time ratio between the system without actuator failure and the system with actuator failures is not less than a specified constant, a sufficient condition for exponential stability and weighted guaranteed cost performance are developed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, as an example, a river pollution control problem illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • In this paper, we provide a reliable few controller design method for descriptor systems satisfying asymptotic stability with $H_\infty$ norm bound and all actuator failures occurred within the pre-specified subset. The proper condition for the existence of a reliable $H_\infty$ controller and the controller design method are proposed by linear matrix inequality(LMI), Schur complements, and singular value decomposition. All solutions can be obtained simultaneously because the presented sufficient condition can be expressed as an LMI form.

  • In this paper we address reliable output feedback control problem for a class of linear systems with actuator/sensor failures. An output feedback control method is proposed which stabilizes the plant and guarantees $H_\inftyt$-norm constraint against all admissible actuator/sensor failures. The controller can be obtainer by solving some LMls that cover all failure cases. Effectiveness of this controller is validated via a numerical example. • This paper proposes a robust fault-tolerant control framework for robot manipulators to maintain the required performance and achieve task completion in the presence of both partial joint failures and complete joint failures and uncertainties. In the case of a complete joint failure or free-swinging joint failure causing the complete loss of torque on a joint, a fully-actuated robot manipulator can be viewed as an underactuated robot manipulator. To detect and identify a complete actuator failure, an on-line fault detection operation is also presented. The proposed fault-tolerant control system contains a robust adaptive controller overcoming partial joint failures based on robust adaptive control methodology, an on-line fault detector detecting and identifying complete joint failures, and a robust adaptive controller overcoming partial and complete joint failures, and so eventually it can face and overcome joint failures and uncertainties. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the proposed robust fault-tolerant control scheme.

  • In this paper, the problem of reliable control of linear systems with time-varying delays, randomly occurring disturbances, and actuator failures is investigated. It is assumed that actuator failures occur when disturbances affect to the systems. Firstly, by using a suitable Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and some recent techniques such as Wirtinger-based integral inequality and reciprocally convex approach, stabilization criterion for nominal systems with time-varying delays is derived. Secondly, the proposed method is extended to the reliable $H_{\infty}$ controller design for linear dynamic systems with time-varying delays, randomly occurring disturbances, and actuator failures. Since nonlinear matrix inequalities (NLMIs) are involved in proposed results, the cone complementarity algorithm will be introduced. Finally, two numerical examples are included to show the effectiveness of the proposed criteria.
