  • In this paper, a modelling technique for simulating self-propelled ships in waves is presented. The flow is modelled using a RANS solver coupled with an actuator disk model for the propeller. The motion of the ship is taken into consideration in the definition of the actuator disk region as well as the advance ratio of the propeller. The RPM of the propeller is controlled using a PID-controller with constraints added on the maximum permissible RPM increase rate. Results are presented for a freely surging model in regular waves with different constraints put on the PID-controller. The described method shows promising results and allows for the studying of several factors relating to self-propulsion. However, more validation data is needed to judge the accuracy of the model.

  • Nonlinear vibration characteristics of a piezoelectric-type micro actuator used for hard disk drives are experimentally studied. The nonlinear characterisitics include hysteresis, superharmonic resonance, jump phenomenon, and shifting of natural frequencies. The vibration modes and frequencies of the commercial actuator of the Hutchinson's Magnum series are measured using a laser vibrometer. From harmonic excitation to the PZT acturator, we observe interesting hysteresis patterns with 3 times input frequency. It is shown that the micro actuator has the typical 3 times superhamonic resonances coupled to the first torsional and sway modes of the suspension.

  • The increased disk rotational velocity to improve the data transfer rate has raised up many serious problems in its servo control system which should control the position and velocity of a spot relative to a rotating disk. This paper proposes gain-scheduling-based track-seek control for single stage actuator of hard disk drives. Gain scheduling is a technique that can extend the validity of the linearization approach to a range of operating points and one of the most popular approaches to nonlinear control design. The proposed method schedules controller gains to improve the transient response and minimize overshoot during the functions of the read/write head positioning servomechanism for the seek control. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through stability analysis and simulation results.

  • Dynamic Load/unload (L/UL) mechanism is an alternative to the contact start stop (CSS) technology which eliminates striction and wear failure modes associated with CSS. Inertia latch mechanism becomes important for mobile disk drives because of non operating shock performance. Various types of latch designs have been introduced in hard disk drives to limit a rotary actuator from sudden uncontrolled motion. In this paper, a single spring inertia latch is introduced for a small form optical disk drive, which uses a rotary actuator for moving an optical pick-up. A new small inertia latch with sin91e spring is designed to ensure both feasible and small size. The shock performance of the new inertia latch is experimentally verified.

  • Recently, the recording density of hard disk drives has improved at an annual percentage rate of 100%. Therefore for faster access, higher disk rotational speeds will be required. The influence of the airflow produced by the rotation of a disk on the positioning accuracy has become a serious topic of research and the aerodynamic aspect of hard disk drives is now quite considerable with the increases in recording density and higher rotational speeds. Unsteady airflow in an actual hard disk drive is numerically simulated by using LES(Large Eddy Simulation) technique, we could predicted and aerodynamic mechanism that was related actuators' surroundings in HDD. At a result, with modifying the various shapes of the E-block and Damper, we estimated the characteristic of the influence of airflow in HDDs.

  • This paper proposes a swing-arm type dual-stage actuator, which consists of a PZT actuator for fine motion and a VCM(voice coil motor) for coarse motion, for an SFF ODD(small form factor optical disk drive), in order to achieve fast access speed and precise track-following control. Over the past few decades there have been a lot of researches related to the VCM and dual-stage actuator. In this paper, we focus our attention on the design and control of the PZT actuator. Due to the dual cantilever structure. the PZT actuator can generate precise translational tracking motion at its tip to which an optical pickup is attached. and the effect of hysteric behavior of the PZT element is reduced. The dynamic model of the PZT actuator is derived by using the Hamilton's principle, and verified by comparing it with the experimental frequency response. The sliding mode control is designed in order to be robust against modeling uncertainties. Simulations and experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the suggested control scheme.

  • Recently the trends in information storage devices need small size, mobility, high capacity, and low power consumption etc. To satisfy those, the development of high performance actuator is an important issue. Compared with general linear actuator for optical disk drive, swingarm type rotary actuator is suitable to design in small form factor and has fast access time for random access. Swingarm actuator is designed considering the structural problem and the actuating force of VCM(Voice Coil Motor). The increase of mass caused by optical components makes vibration problems of swing-arm, therefore resonance frequency should be increased and inertia has to be reduced. ANSYS FEM tool is employed in optimizing swingarm. The VCM is designed using 3-D electro-magnetic analysis, and parameters of magnetic circuit are determined to matte large flux density. The large flux density enables to achieve low power consumption. VCM holder is designed to get the mass balance of total actuator and this balance reduces the magnitude of critical mode relative to pivot bearing, It is expected that swingarm type rotary actuator designed by this method is available to variable type of micro optical disk drives.

  • In this paper, the dual stage interaction between the coarse actuator and the fine actuator of an optical disk drive and the control method to enhance the track pull-in performance are discussed. First, the interaction analyses for the dual stage, and the experiments to find the each actuator dynamics are studied. From the experiments results, some physical parameters was derived, then, some simulations are performed to find the residual vibration effect of the fine actuator during seek motion. Second, the fine actuator control method to reduce the relative velocity, which is a key factor in track pull-in performance, between the target track and beam spot is proposed. From simulations, we show that fine actuator control which has same frequency and same phase of the disturbance is effective to reduce the relative velocity, hence, the control method is good approach in the track pull-in enhancement. Finally, the some comments are discussed briefly.

  • In this work, we propose a new type of HDD suspension featuring shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator in order to prevent the contact between the slider and disk. The principal design parameters are obtained from the modal analysis using finite element analysis, and then the dynamic model is established to formulate the control scheme for Non-Contact Start/stop mode drive. Subsequently, a robust H$\_$$\infty$/ control algorithm is designed by integrating experimentally-Obtained SMA actuator dynamics to the proposed HDD suspension system. The controller is empirically realized and control results for the load/unload profiles are presented in time domain. In addition, the contact signal between the slider and disk is measured by the electrical resistance method.
