The main function of a fuel tank is to store fuel. On the other hand, the structural soundness of the fuel tank is related directly to the survival of the crew in an emergency situation, such as an aircraft crash, and the relevant performance is demonstrated by a crash impact test. Because crash impact tests have a high risk of failure due to the high impact loads, various efforts have been made to minimize the possibility of trial and error in the actual test at the beginning of the design. Numerical analysis performed before the actual test is a part of such efforts. For the results of numerical analysis to be reflected in the design, however, the reliability of numerical analysis needs to be ensured. In this study, the results of numerical analysis and actual test data were compared to ensure the reliability of numerical analysis for the crash impact test of a rotorcraft fuel tank. For the numerical analysis of a crash impact test, LS-DYNA, crash analysis software, was used and the ALE (arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) technique was applied as the analysis method. To obtain actual test data, strain gages were installed on the metal fittings of the fuel tank and linked to the data acquisition equipment. The strain and stress of the fuel tank fitting were calculated by numerical analysis. The reliability of the numerical analysis was enhanced by assessing the error between the strain measurement of the upper fitting obtained from an actual fuel tank and the strain calculated from numerical analysis.

Although most bridge foundations are usually constructed by Caisson, terrain difficulties sometimes bring about constructing bridge foundations by Jacket piles. This study investigated the dynamic characteristics of Caisson and Jacket by testing the impact applied to actual bridge foundations. The test result showed that the damping ratio of the foundation constructed by Jacket and Caisson were measured 1-2% and 3-6%, respectively. Considering the lateral deflection measured by the impact test, the rigidity of foundations constructed by Jacket was assessed about 1/5 - 1/6 of those constructed by Caisson. It implies that designing bridge foundations should include and reflect the dynamic analysis of bridge foundation.

It is to be classified into friendly environment and safety problems, as a main technology development of the recent automotive industry. As these tendency, lots of automobile companies focus on a reduction of fuel expenses and strengthen of crash safety using high strength steel. In this study advanced technologies such as tailored blanks, aluminum extrusion and high strength steel forming applied to bumper beam will be described. As a result of impact analysis and an actual impact test, in terms of beam performance and a possibility fur the mass production will be discussed.

This paper presents the modeling and validation of a pile-driver breech fatigue testing system model to replicate actual high pressure in a large caliber gun barrel. A hysteresis damping function was incorporated in the nonlinear impact force model. Test of real pile-driver breech fatigue testing system had been performed for model validation. Comparison of the experimental result and model simulation during impact were made. Numerical studies were performed to evaluate how the actual chamber pressure pattern in the live firing of gun barrel was affected by parameters' variation. Some of the parameters simulated included input velocity, damping coefficient and stiffness. As a result, a variety of actual chamber pressure pattern could be reproduced and controlled through current simulation model.

The use of non-bearing light weight wall has increased recently due to the increase of high-rise buildings and supply of long-life housing. Light weight wall has advantages such as reducing the self-weight of the building, convenience in installation, and shortening construction period, however, must have a sufficient strength to external force. This study standardized the impact resistance test method for light weight walls by using the actual impact load obtained through load analysis test in previous studies. The impact resistance test method was divided into the test method that uses soft body and the one that uses hard body. The size of specimen was set up as height 2.4m and width 3.0m. The size and shape of the body followed those used in BS 5234-2 and so on for the compatibility with the test method used overseas. The judgment criteria for impact resistance based on test results were not defined uniformly as the assessment of functional damage can vary depending on the type of material, structural method, purpose of wall, and so on even when the same impact load was applied.

This study addresses the issue of safety of the splash guard of a computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool at the design stage. As an impact test for evaluating safety requirements such as strength under the safety regulation is an expensive and iterative task, it is necessary to develop a new method to minimize the task of the impact test for development of the machine tool. In this study, explicit finite element method was adopted for replacement of the impact test of the splash guard of a machine tool at the design stage. A finite element model was developed for implementing the impact test on an actual vertical CNC lathe and then produced the analysis including plastic strain and deformation to enable the safety of its splash guard to be determined. The analysis results demonstrated that the finite element method can be applied to safety evaluation for design of the splash guard of a CNC machine tool.

In case of large soft body impact test at the construction site, the test conditions are different from conditions at the laboratory, and the length of rope to hold the impact specimen must be changed. In a previous study, the fact that the size of impact load is varied by the length of rope on the large soft body impact specimen was confirmed. In this study, the length of rope and fall height were set as independent variables to conduct the load analysis test. It was determined that the load fluctuation was occurred depending on the length of rope under the fall height over 100 mm, and it is concluded that the additional setup of fall height to modify the actual impact load size is required when the length of rope is below 2.5 m. In this study, the modified formula to put equal size of impact load regardless of the length of rope was extracted through the experiment.
The ballistic limit of Carbon/Epoxy composite laminates with the finite effective area are predicted by using the quasi-static perforation test and semi-empirical formula. The perforation energy were calculated from force-displacement curve in quasi-static perforation test. Also, the actual ballistic limit and penetration energy were obtained through the high-velocity impact test. The quasi-static perforation test and high-velocity impact test were conducted for the specimens with 3 different effective areas. In the high-velocity impact test, the air gun impact tester were used, and the ballistic and residual velocity was measured. The required inputs for the semi-empirical formula were determined by the quasi-static perforation tests and high-velocity impact tests. The comparison between semi-empirical formula and high-velocity impact test results were conducted and examined. The ballistic limits predicted by semi-empirical formula were agreed well with high-velocity impact test results.

Automatic reclosing is a typical protection method in power distribution systems for clearing the temporary faults. However, it has a fatal weakness in regards to voltage sags because it produces successive voltage sags. In this paper, we explored successive impact of voltage sag due to the automatic reclosing of power distribution systems. The actual tests of low voltage loads were accomplished for obtaining the susceptibility of voltage sags. The final results of the test yielded power acceptability curves of voltage sag, and the curves were transformed the 3-dimensional CBEMA(Computer Business Equipment Manufacturer Association) format. For the quantitative evaluation of the impact of successive voltage sags, an assessment formulation using the voltage sag contour was proposed. The proposed formulation was tested by using the voltage sag contour data of IEEE standard and the results of the test. Through the case studies, we verified that the proposed method can be effectively used to evaluate the actual impact of successive voltage sans.
The Charpy V impact test on subsize was performed on narrow laser welds of low carbon steel sheets, joined by using a continuous wave 3kW CO$_2$ laser. Under certain conditions, a bimodal fracture behaviour has been experienced in Charpy V impact test of narrow laser beam welds. Deviation of the fracture path from the fusion zone into the base metal was dominated at high test temperature. It can be seen that the deviation always occurred after ductile initiation. If the deviation occurs on a small testing specimen, the same trend would happen on the actual laser welded structure. Fracture will then propagate through the base material even if the weld metal has low toughness.
