  • The real-time monitoring about the activity of the human provides useful information about the activity quantity and ability. The present study implemented a small-size and low-power acceleration monitoring system for convenient monitoring of activity quantity and recognition of emergent situations such as falling during daily life. For the wireless transmission of acceleration sensor signal, we developed a wireless transmission system based on a wireless sensor network. In addition, we developed a program for storing and monitoring wirelessly transmitted signals on PC in real-time. The performance of the implemented system was evaluated by assessing the output characteristic of the system according to the change of posture, and parameters and acontext recognition algorithm were developed in order to monitor activity volume during daily life and to recognize emergent situations such as falling. In particular, recognition error in the sudden change of acceleration was minimized by the application of a falling correction algorithm

  • The location and human activity are usually used as one of the important parameters to monitor the health status in healthcare devices. However, nearly all existing location and monitoring systems have the limitation of short-range communication and high power consumption. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism to collect and transmit monitoring information based on LoRa technology. The monitoring device with sensors can collect the real-time activity and location information and transmit them to the cloud server through LoRa gateway. The user can check all his history and current information through the specific designed mobile applications. Experiment was carried out to verify the communication, power consumption and monitoring performance of the entire system. Experimental results demonstrate that this system can collect monitoring and activity information accurately and provide the long rang coverage with low power consumption.

  • In recent years, there has been a rise in epidemiological evidence suggesting the health benefits of a physically active lifestyle. However, it is not always easy for individuals to personally recognize the optimal conditions for exercise and physical activity. Wearable acceleration-based pedometers have become widely used in estimating the amount of physical activity, and to a limited extent, providing information regarding exercise intensity, but they have never been used to assess adaptation to exercise. In order to realize simultaneous activity monitoring for multiple users exercising outdoors, we developed a prototype wireless local area network (WLAN) based system. In our system, a WLAN is deployed outside, and a user wearing a smart phone and monitoring device exercises freely within the coverage area of the wireless network. By doing so, the developed system is able to monitor the activity of each user andmeasures various parameters including those related to exercise adaptation. In a demonstration experiment, the developed system was evaluated and used to monitor users enjoying a Nordic walk, after which users were immediately able to receive their exercise report. In this paper, we discuss the requirements and issues in developing an activity monitoring system and report the findings we obtained through the demonstration experiment.

  • Hardware for monitoring the water quality using water fleas is developed. Water flea is a frequently used biological sensor for monitoring the water quality. Water fleas quickly respond to the incoming toxic water by changing their activity when they are exposed. By measuring the activity of water fleas, the incoming toxic water is instantly detected. So far the measurement of activity of water fleas has been done with a system equipped with both a light source of LED and a light detector of photo transistor. Water flea itself is, however, sensitive to light resulting in incorrect response and the system has two inconvenient separate parts of the light source and the detector. This paper suggests a system using a CCD camera instead of a light source and a detector. The suggested system processes the image data from the CCD camera in real time without any delay. The developed system becomes a part of the remote water monitoring embedded system.

  • Activity monitoring has been widely recognized as important and critical tools in system monitoring for detection of abnormal behavior. In this research, we propose a data-driven activity monitoring method to measure relative sales performance which is not sensitive to special event which frequently occur in marketing area. Moreover, the proposed method can automatically updates the monitoring threshold that accommodates a drastically changing business environment. The results from simulation and practical case study from sales of electronic devices demonstrate the usefulness and applicability of the proposed activity monitoring method.

  • In this paper, we propose a pet monitoring system based on deep learning using an activity recognition device. The system consists of a pet's activity recognition device, a pet owner's smart device, and a server. Accelerometer and gyroscope data were collected from an Arduino-based activity recognition device, and the number of steps was calculated. The collected data is pre-processed and the amount of activity is measured by recognizing the activity in five types (sitting, standing, lying, walking, running) through a deep learning model that hybridizes CNN and LSTM. Finally, monitoring of changes in the activity, such as daily and weekly briefing charts, is provided on the pet owner's smart device. As a result of the performance evaluation, it was confirmed that specific activity recognition and activity measurement of pets were possible. Abnormal behavior detection of pets and expansion of health care services can be expected through data accumulation in the future.

  • This paper describes a development of a portable physical activity monitoring system using two accelerometers to quantify physical activity. The system hardware consists of two piezoresistive accelerometers, amplifiers with gain of 30, lowpass filters with cut-off frequency of 15Hz, offset control circuits, one-chip microcontroller and flash memory card. In order to evaluate the performance of the system we acquired 3 channel data at 32 sample/sec from body-fixed accelerometers in chest and right upper leg. And then the acquired data were processed by MatLab on personal computer. We tried to distinguish not only fundamental actions which are steady-state activities such as standing, sitting, and lying but also dynamic activities with walking, up a stairway, down a stairway, and running. Five subjects participated the evaluation process which compare the video data with the measured data. As a result, the activity classification rate of 90.6% on average was obtained. Overall results showed that the steady-state activities could be classified from the low component of 3-axis acceleration signal and dynamic activities could be distinguished from frequency analysis using wavelet transform and FFT. Finally, we could find that this system can be applied to acquire and analyze the static and dynamic physical activity data.

  • On-line partial discharge(PD) monitoring system has been developed to monitor in operating large motor stator insulations. This system makes use of remote diagnosis techniques for the evaluation of PD activity in the control center of thermal power plant. This system can be remotely accessed via a modem to build database, analyze status and interpret the pattern of PD activity. A personnel computer is generally connected to ten motors to continuous measurement of the PD activity. The test data can be easily interpreted by a maintenance staff. For assessing the condition of stator winding in motors, this system ensures a reliable measurement and accurate estimation. Capacitive couplers used for on-line PD measurement have been 80pF. The maximum PD magnitude(Qmax), PD pattern and normalized quantity number(NQN) were performed by this system.

  • Recently, many enterprises are introducing information systems for their competitive advantages. For enhancing the utilization level of enterprise information system, it is quite important to monitor the usage states of the information systems continuously. However, most enterprise information systems lack this functionality. Proposed in this paper is the framework of IAM (Information Activity Monitoring), which is defined as real-time reporting and alerting of significant information-related activities. This IAM framework provides 4 different views about the information system (data, IT system, business process, and participant) and is implemented as a part of integrated design/manufacturing information system developed by aerospace parts manufacturer. By using the IAM function, IT personnel can monitor significant information-related activities systematically and feedback to their users timely, and ultimately enhance the utilization level of information system.
