  • Future on-board vehicle control systems can be further improved through new types of mechatronic systems. In particular, these systems' capacities for interaction enhance safety, comfort and economic viability. The Automotive Engineering Department (fzd) of darmstadt University of Technology is engaged in research of the mechatronic vehicle corner, which consists of three subsystems: sensor tire, electrically actuated wheel brake and smart suspension. By intercommunication of these three systems, the brake controller receives direct, fast and permanent information about dynamic events in the tire contact area provided by the tire sensor as valuable control input. This allows to control operation conditions of each wheel brake. The information provided by the tire sensor for example help to distinguish between staightline driving and cornering as well as to determine $\mu$-split conditions. In conjunction with current information of dynamic wheel loads, tire pressures and friction tyre/road, the ideal brake force distribution can be achieved. Alike through integration of adaptive suspension bushings, elastokinematic behaviour and wheel positions can be adapted to manoeuver-oriented requirements.

  • As life expectancy becomes longer, reduction of human muscular strength threatens quality of human life. Many robotic devices have thus been developed to support and help human daily life. This paper deals with a new type of in-wheel actuator that can be effectively used for the robotic devices. BLDC motor, drive board, brake, ARS (Attribute Reference System), and torque sensor are combined in the single actuator module. The torque sensor is used to recognize human intention and the in-wheel actuator drives walking aids in our system. Its feasibility was tested with the active walking aid device equipped with the in-wheel actuator. Based on it, we designed an admittance filter algorithm to react on uphill and downhill drive. By adjusting mass, damping, and spring parameters in accordance with the ARS output, it provided convenient drive to the old on uphill and downhill walks.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop a gait assistive device to enhance the gait stability and training efficiency of stroke patients. The configuration of this device is mainly composed of a motored wheel and a single cane whose lower end is attached to a motored wheel frame. A patient can feel haptic information from continuous ground contact from the wheel while walking through the grip handle. In addition, the wheeled cane can avoid using excessive use of the patient's upper limb for weight support and motivate the patient to use a paralyzed lower limb more actively. Moreover, the proposed device can provide intuitive and safe user interaction by integrating a force sensor and a tilt sensor equipped to the cane frame, and a switch sensor at the cane's handle. The admittance control has been implemented for the patient to change the walking speed intuitively by using the interaction forces at the handle. A hemi-paretic stroke patient participated in the walking assistive experiments as a pilot study to verify the effectiveness of the proposed haptic cane system. The results showed that the patient could improve walking speed and muscle activations during walking with a constant speed mode of the haptic cane. Moreover, the patient could maintain the preferred walking speeds and gait stability regardless of the magnitude of resistance forces with the admittance control mode of the haptic cane. The proposed robotic gait assistive device with a simple and intuitive mechanism can provide efficient gait training modes to stroke patients with high possibilities of widespread utilizations.

  • EPS(Electric Power Steering) systems have many advantages over traditional hydraulic power steering systems in space efficiency engine efficiency and environmental compatibility. In this paper an EPS system control logic using a torque map is proposed. The main function of the EPS system is to reduce the steering torque exerted by a driver by assist of an electric motor. Vehcile speed steering torque and steering wheel angle are measured and fed back to the EPS control system where appropriate assist torque is generated to assist the operator's steering effort. Another capability of the EPS system for easy adaptation to different steering feels via simple tuning is demonstrated by the experiments. It will be also verified that the EPS system can also improve damping and return performance of the steering wheel by control of the assist motor.

  • This paper includes real-time tractive force estimation method using standard vehicle sensors such as wheel speed, brake pressure, throttle position, engine speed, and transmission carrier speed sensor. Engine map, torque converter lookup table, shaft torque observer, and brake gain adaptation method are used to estimate the tractive force. To verify this estimator, measurement which uses strain-based brake torque sensor and estimation results are presented. All results was performed using a real vehicle in a real-time.

  • This work deals with navigation of an omni-directional mobile robot with active caster wheels. Initially, the posture of the omni-directional mobile robot is calculated by using the odometry information. Next, the position accuracy of the mobile robot is measured through comparison of the odometry information and the external sensor measurement. Finally, for successful navigation of the mobile robot, a motion planning algorithm that employs kinematic redundancy resolution method is proposed. Through experiments for multiple obstacles and multiple moving obstacles, the feasibility of the proposed navigation algorithm was verified.

  • A System for reducing vehicle body roll by active control is developed. The stabilizer bar with hydraulic rotary actuator produces anti-roll moment which suppresses roll tendency. This reduction of roll improves the driving safety as well as the ride comfort. Vehicle test data shows considerable reduction of roll angle during steady-state turning. Also improvement of ride comfort is achieved by making the actuator freely rotatable, i.e. by connecting all chambers of actuator in normal driving conditions. A control algorithm using steering wheel angle and vehicle speed signal as input valve is applied. It is compared with signal of the G-sensor.

  • Korea has achieved significant economic growth with building the Gyeongbu Expressway. As the number of new road construction projects has decreased, it becomes more important to maintain optimal status of the current road networks. One of the best ways to accomplish it is weight enforcement as active control measure of traffic load. This study is to develop High-speed Weigh-in-motion System in order to enhance efficiency of weight enforcement, and to analyze patterns of overloaded trucks on highways through the system. Furthermore, it is to review possibilities of developing overweight control system with application of the HS-WIM system. The HS-WIM system developed by this study consists of two sets of an axle load sensor, a loop sensor and a wandering sensor on each lane. A wandering sensor detects whether a travelling vehicle is off the lane or not with the function of checking the location of tire imprint. The sensor of the WIM system has better function of classifying types of vehicles than other existing systems by detecting wheel distance and tire type such as single or dual tire. As a result, its measurement errors regarding 12 types of vehicle classification are very low, which is an advantage of the sensor. The verification tests of the system under all conditions showed that the mean measurement errors of axle weight and gross axle weight were within 15 percent and 7 percent respectively. According to the WIM rate standard of the COST-323, the WIM system of this study is ranked at B(10). It means the system is appropriate for the purpose of design, maintenance and valuation of road infrastructure. The WIM system in testing a 5-axle cargo truck, the most frequently overloaded vehicle among 12 types of vehicles, is ranked at A(5) which means the system is available to control overloaded vehicles. In this case, the measurement errors of axle load and gross axle load were within 8 percent and 5 percent respectively. Weight analysis of all types of vehicles on highways showed that the most frequently overloaded vehicles were type 5, 6, 7 and 12 among 12 vehicle types. As a result, it is necessary to use more effective overweight enforcement system for vehicles which are seriously overloaded due to their lift axles. Traffic volume data depending upon vehicle types is basic information for road design and construction, maintenance, analysis of traffic flow, road policies as well as research.
