A new approach to the active phased arrays for the second harmonic generation is presented. Phase variation between the second harmonic oscillators by the mutual synchronization is analyzed theoretically. In this coupling, the active antenna consists of the FET oscillator which plays two roles in fundamental oscillation and frequency multiplying, and the patch antenna resonated at the second harmonic frequency. The radiated second harmonic wave was scanned by varying the free-running oscillation frequencies of the active antennas. In the experiment using the 2-elements array and the 4-elements array, the radiated beam of the second harmonic wave was scanned more widely compared with the case of the fundamental wave radiation.

In this paper, the linear active phased array antenna system operated in Ku DBS band was designed and experimented. The antenna system was composed of sixteen radiating active channels and Wilkinson power combiners with 16-channel inputs, a stabilizing DC bias and phase control board. Electrical beams of the antenna system can be formed by controling the phase-states of 3-bit digital phase shifter inside each active channel by virtue of the phase control board. The amplitude and phase deviations measured between active channels were less than ${\pm}0.8dB$ and ${\pm}15^{\circ}$, respectively, and the noise figure of each active channel was measured less than 1.2 dB in the operating band. The measured performances of the overall antenna system showed the antenna gain of more than 23.07 dBi and the sidelobe level of less than -11.17 dBc, and the bore-sight cross-polarization level of less than -12.75 dBc in the operating band. Also, by phase-controlling active channels, the beam scan patterns at $10^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}$ were measured, and the losses caused by the corresponding beam scanning were 1.1 dB, 2.5 dB and 3.6 dB from the measurements, respectively.

The active phased array antenna system performs beam steering, multi-beam formation and adaptive beam forming by controlling the amplitude and phase of signals fed to each radiating element. In order to obtain the desired radiation characteristics using an active phased array antenna system, the accurate amplitude and phase of the signal must be fed to each radiating element; however, due to various causes, the signal errors occurs in each radiating element. In this paper, a signal error estimation method of each radiating element is proposed. The proposed method simplifies the process of signal error estimation, and can quickly and accurately calculate the signal error.

In this paper, the 5-element active phased array antennas coupled through slotline between elements are designed and fabricated. A recent studies on the active phased array antennas using the transmission line coupling which can be designed to provide strong coupling and the appropriate coupling phase. But this sturucture has limitation of expanding in two dimensions for planar active phased array antennas and distortion of the radiation pattern caused by coupling network. Thus our work proposes the slotline coupling structure asthe broadband coupling network for the active phased array antenna. In experiment, 5-elements active phased array antenas have steering range from -30.deg. to 20.deg. off broadside as the free-running frequencies of end elements are controlled. The overall results show that the proposed slotline coupling structure is suited for the coupling network in the actie phased array antenna system. And the proposed coupling structire solves the expansion problem and eliminates the distortion of the radiation pattern caused by the spurious radiation of the transmission line coupling network. Thus thiscan be expanded to two dimensional coupling network for the planar active phased array antenna system.

An active phased away antenna consists of many channels including radiator and active circuitary that contains low noise amplifiers and phase shifters. Each channel has different initial phase shift and gain because of inequality in active circuitary itself, interface between radiator and active circuitary, beam forming network and other antenna configurations. This is an inherent problem in active phased away antenna, therefore each channels' initial phase shifts and gains should be calibrated for obtaining the designed radiation pattern and antenna gain. In this paper, an efficient calibration method for the active phased array antenna is presented. By performing the above method, thhe antenna gain is increased more than 2.0 dB after calibrating considerably unequal 12 channels' initial phase shifts and gains.

This paper presents an X-band (9.375 GHz) $1{\times}2$ array microstrip antenna which is capable of active beam compensation for installation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). First of all, a basic $1{\times}2$ array microstrip antenna incorporated with wilkinson power divider was designed and performance of the array antenna was verified. Next, to verify beam steering performance of the designed array microstrip antenna, we fabricated a phase shifter, and the wilkinson power divider as module structure and measured characteristics of beam steering according to phase shifting. The main lobe is 0.6 dBi at $0^{\circ}$, and the side lobe decreased 18.8 dB. The reliable radiation pattern was achieved. Finally, an active beam steering microstrip array antenna attached with the phase shifter and the power divider on the back side of the antenna was designed and fabricated to install wing of UAV for compactness. The maximum gain is 0.1 dBi. Therefore, we obtained a basic antenna technology for compensating beam error according to wing deformation of an UAV installed array antennas.

This paper deals with extending the variable natural oscillation frequency range of an active integrated FET oscillator. In this paper, we conform experimentally that the variable range of the natural oscillation frequency is expanded about three times in the oscillator controlled by the varactor diode. When the frequency difference is given to the oscillators in the two element antenna system, phase difference appeared between the oscillators. The 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-element patch antenna arrays are composed for the beam scanning experiments. All the above patch antennas show good phased array characteristics. The range of the scanning angle is about $30^{\circ}$, and the radiation power is gradually increased from $50{\mu}W\;to\;200{\mu}W$. The radiation patterns we sharpened as the number of elements is increased.

In this thesis, a two-dimensional active phased array antenna without phase shifter is studied for two-dimensional beam scanning. A designed two-dimensional oscillator-type active array antenna, radiation elements and the oscillator circuits were combined with via-hole and coupled by slot on the opposite ground plane. The operating characteristics are analyzed and experimentally demonstrated , The two-dimensional $4\times4$ elements were designed for the proper coupling strengths and coupling phases by adjusting the width, length and offset position of slot-lines. The fabricated active phased array antenna shows the beam shift characteristics capable of scanning from $-17^{\circ}$ to $18^{\circ}$ with respect to broadside in one dimension, from $-5^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ in two dimension. The experimental results show that it is possible to use the oscillator-type active phased array antenna as a two-dimensional planar array antenna.
In this paper, an accurate characterization of a fabricated X-band transmit/receive module is described with the process of generating control data to correct amplitude and phase deviations in an active electronically scanned array antenna unit. In the characterization, quantization errors (from both a digitally controlled attenuator and a phase shifter) are considered using not theoretical values (due to discrete sets of amplitude and phase states) but measured values (of which implementation errors are a part). By using the presented procedure for the characterization, each initial control bit of both the attenuator and the phase shifter is closest to the required value for each array element position. In addition, each compensated control bit for the parasitic cross effect between amplitude and phase control is decided using the same procedure. Reduction of the peak sidelobe level of an array antenna is presented as an example to validate the proposed procedure.

In this paper, it is proposed the phase shifter array active system to receive digital satellite broadcasting for vehicle. To receive satellite broadcasting data in vehicle, it is inevitable to have active antenna system, which traces the satellite in real time. Also if it is used in vehicle, it must be thin and light structure. To develop this type of antenna system, several techniques should be integrated properly. These are the design and manufacturing technique of high gain antenna, algorithm for tracking satellite and its manufacturing technique, controller design and manufacturing technique, system integration technique and so on. The validity of the proposed AVDBS system was confirmed by simulation and experimental results.
