  • The active rule system is a key element of the rule-based mobile agent middleware system for activeness and autonomy of the sensor network. The rule manager, which is the main components of active rule based mobile agent framework and active rule system, performs the control and management of the rule-related processes. In this paper, we design and implement the roles and functions of the rule manager in detail. The proposed rule manager plays an important role in the sensor network environment. The sensor data server loads the active rule on the mobile agent by the rule manager according to the situations, and the mobile agent migrates to the destination node and performs the designated action. This active rule-based mobile agent middleware system presents the usefulness for the various sensor network applications. Through the rule execution experiment using the rule-based mobile agent, we show the adaptability and applicability of rule-based mobile agent middleware system to the dynamic environmental changes in sensor networks.

  • An H-sector horn antenna has a constant beam coverage characteristic and it can be useful for application to a wide band phased array antenna system. In this paper, we designed a broadband E-plane H-sector horn phased-array antenna, which has a 3:1 bandwidth and ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ beam steering capability. An H-sector hem antenna was designed to have $30{\sim}50^{\circ}$ half-power beam width in the principal H-plane. The active reflection coefficient including mutual coupling was calculated using a waveguide simulator, and the active reflection characteristic was improved by mutual coupling over wide frequency range. Using these results, an $8{\times}1$ H-sector phased array antenna was fabricated. The measurement results for the half-power beam width in the principal H-plane and the active reflection coefficient showed a good agreement with the simulation results. The peak-value pattern in the steered radiation beams also agreed well with the active element pattern. The measured active reflection coefficients within the beam steering range are mostly less than 0.3 over the 3:1 frequency range.

  • In this study, An active band grass filter for 2.14GHz have been designed with MMIC using negative resistance circuit. The negative resistance element was realized with a common-drain FET with series inductive feedback. The designed active filter showed an insertion loss of 0dB at 2.14GHz and a 3-dB bandwidth of 125MHz.

  • We have cloned an internal fragment of the putative transoisase gene of MLE in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, using PCR method with degenerative oligonucleotide primers designed to represent regions of amino acids encoding transposase. The resulting PCR clone, designed as BmoMAR, cords a partial ORF(152 a.a.) of MLE in which interrupted by five stop codons, and the sequence of its deduced amino acids showed 37% homology with Mos1, an active mariner, from Drosophila mauritiana. Furthermore, the BmoMAR exhibits nucleotide and amino acid homology with 59% and 37% from Apis mellifera and D. mauritiana 7.9 clone, respectively. This result strongly that a MLE is present in the genome of B. mori.

  • The frequency of a traditional tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) depends solely on the length of liquid column, which imposes certain restrictions on its application to long span cable-stayed bridges during construction. The configuration of a cable-stayed bridge varies from different construction stages and so do its natural frequencies. It is thus difficult to apply TLCD with a fixed configuration to the bridge during construction or it is not economical to design a series of TLCD with different liquid lengths to suit for various construction stages. Semi-active tuned liquid column damper (SATLCD) with adaptive frequency tuning capacity is studied in this paper for buffeting response control of a long span cable-stayed bridge during construction. The frequency of SATLCD can be adjusted by active control of air pressures inside the air chamber at the two ends of the container. The performance of SATLCD for suppressing combined lateral and torsional vibration of a real long span cable-stayed bridge during construction stage is numerically investigated using a finite element-based approach. The finite element model of SATLCD is also developed and incorporated into the finite element model of the bridge for predicting buffeting response of the coupled SATLCD-bridge system in the time domain. The investigations show that with a fixed container configuration, the SATLCD with adaptive frequency tuning can effectively reduce buffeting response of the bridge during various construction stages.

  • This paper is the first part of the study on the development of a smart active layer (SAL) sensor, which consists of two parts. In this first part, the theory and concept of the SAL sensor is investigated, which is designed for the detection of elastic waves caused by internal cracks and damages in structures. For the development SAL sensor, (i) the basic theory of elastic waves was studied, (ii) the feasible study of the SAL as an elastic waves detection sensor using the finite element analysis (FEA) with respect to a piezoceramic disc was performed. (iii) the comparison of performances between some piezoceramic sensors and a commercial acoustic emission (AE) sensor was accomplished to ensure the applicability by the experimental means, such as a pencil lead break test. Also, the conceptional study for the SAL sensor, which can be utilized for the effective detection and locating of defects by the arrangement of regularly distributed sensors, was discussed.

  • In this paper, An active antenna of T-DMB was developed to equip to handhold gadgets by using LNA and a parasitic element allowing to miniature. The size of the fabricated active antenna is $80{\times}6{\times}0.4\;mm$ and FR4 is used for the substrate. The size of the proposed antenna is reduced by 38.8% at the operating frequency compared to one without a parasitic element, and a short stub. The proposed antenna shows improved performance at the measurement especially in the ratio of S/N compared with conventional monopole of 300 mm. The proposed antenna is well able to adapt into handhold gadgets for receiving T-DMB.

  • It is known that there is no demand for building the arctic environment in Korea. However, it is important to use the different energy source instead of fuel source due to global warming. It is now demanded of using gas of Alaska and Siberia for long term developing the natural gas. The design of gas pipelines in Korea is very different from the arctic region. The operation of gas in arctic region have to consider of arctic region such as permafrost and active regions. It is needed to understand of gas pipeline design with different arctic soil properties. Nowadays, the pipelines is designed with stress-based and but there is demanded for strain based design with more deformed pipeline. We study of arctic environment with different active region using Finite Element Method of thermal elasto-plastic analysis.

  • The effect of a finite substrate size on the radiation characteristics of a two-element linear E-plane array antenna using microstrip patch antennas is investigated. The average active element pattern characteristics of two-element E-plane array antennas printed on different dielectric constant substrates with various substrate sizes and element spacings are analyzed. Using the average active element pattern, the radiation pattern characteristics of the array antenna versus scan angle is analyzed. The simulation results show that the diffracted fields of surface waves from substrate edges have a significant effect on the radiation characteristics of a 2-element E-plane array antenna. The distance between the center of patch antenna and the substrate edges on the E-plane for the enhancement of radiation characteristics of the array antenna is about $0.35{\lambda}_0$.

  • A single-switched series element for series-parallel compensated UPS is proposed. The proposed series element can handle only unidirectional power and the input voltage must be higher than the output voltage. But it is very useful when DC-link voltage is low and isolation transformer is need for output stage since only one active switch is used.
