Impact of Air Convection on H3PO4-Activated Biomass for Sequestration of Cu (II) and Cd (II) Ions

  • Crushed, depitted peach stones were impregnated activated with 50% $H_3PO_4$ followed by pyrolysis at $500^{\circ}C$. Two activated carbons were produced, one under its own evolved gases during pyrolysis, and the second conducted with air flow throughout the carbonization stage. Physicochemical properties were investigated by several procedures; carbon yield, ash content, elemental chemical analysis, TG/DTG and FTIR spectra. Porosity characteristics were determined by the conventional $N_2$ adsorption at 77 K, and data analyzed to get the major texture parameters of surface area and pore volume. Highly developed activated carbons were obtained, essentially microporous, with slight effect of air on the porous structure. Oxygen was observed to be markedly incorporated in the carbon matrix during the air treatment process. Cation exchange capacity towards Cu (II) and Cd (II) was tested in batch single ion experimental mode, which proved to be slow and a function of carbon dose, time and initial ion concentration. Copper was up taken more favorably than cadmium, under same conditions, and adsorption of both cations was remarkably enhanced as a consequence of the air treatment procedure. Sequestration of the metal ions was explained on basis of the combined effect of the oxygen functional groups and the phosphorous-containing compounds; both contributing to the total surface acidity character.

  • In this work, the presence of nitrification biochemical oxygen demand (NBOD) frequently occurred in the sewer outflow in winter season was analysed by the COD fraction methods using the respirometry and process simulations with real operation data measurements and analysis. The activated sludge models applied in this process simulation were based on the ASM No.2d temp. models, published by International Association on Water Quality (IAWQ). The ASM No.2d model is an extension of the ASM No.2 model and takes into account of carbon removal, nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal. The denitrifying capacity of phosphorus accumulating organisms has been implemented in the ASM No.2d model because experimental evidence shows that some of the phosphorus accumulating organisms can denitrify. It was shown that the concentrations of autotrophs (X_AUT) in the secondary clarifier and the $NH_4-N$ of T-N increased in the presence of NBOD measurements. Because of the low temperature (average $8^{\circ}C$) and possible operational troubles, the outcoming autotrophs exhausted oxygen in the process of nitrifying $NH_4-N$.

  • Transparent and conduction tin oxide films have been deposited on glass substrates employing the low pressure chemical vapor deposition technique. Tetramethyltin, 1, 1, 1, 2-tetrafluoroethane, and pure oxygen or ozone-containing oxygen were used as the precursor, dopant and oxidant, respectively. In order to examine the role of ozone in the low pressure chemical vapor deposition of tin oxide films, deposition rate, and electrical and optical properties of tin oxide films deposited using ozone-containing oxygen were compared with those using pure oxygen. Tetramethyltin and 1, 1, 1, 2-tetrafluoroethane were chemically activated by thermally initiated decomposition of ozone. Using ozone-containing oxygen under otherwise identical deposition conditions, we succeeded in preparing tin oxide films f better quality at higher deposition rate.

자동차 화상시뮬레이터에서 운전 중 동시과제 수행에 고농도 산소와 향 자극이 미치는 영향 (Effect of Highly Concentrated Oxygen and Stimulus of Odors on the Performance of Secondary Tasks While Driving Using Vehicle Graphic Driving Simulator)

  • In this study, it was observed through the ability of performing secondary tasks and baseline fetal heart rate how the supply of lavender, peppermint and highly concentrated oxygen (40%) affected distraction due to the performance of secondary tasks in the driving environment. Twelve male university students conducted secondary tasks while driving in the environments (6 in total) mixed and designed with oxygen concentration (21%, 40%) and the condition of odors (Normal, Lavender, Peppermint). The test was proceeded in order of stable state (5mins), driving (5mins), and secondary tasks (1min), and by extracting ECG data from every section by 30secs, the mean value of baseline fetal heart rate was calculated. As a result of analysis, in the ability of performing secondary tasks, a percentage of correct answers showed no difference in oxygen concentration and the condition of odors (p > 0.05). In performance completion time, a percentage of correct answers decreased showing a statistically significant difference in the condition of odors compared with the condition where odors were not provided (p < 0.05). As for baseline fetal heart rate, in the comparison between sections, while performing secondary tasks, it increased showing a significant difference compared with stable state and driving state (p < 0.05). The effect of interaction was observed in oxygen concentration and the condition of odors. When odors were not provided, baseline fetal heart rate decreased in 40% oxygen concentration compared with 21% oxygen concentration (p < 0.05), however, when peppermint was provided, it increased in 40% oxygen concentration compared with 21% oxygen concentration (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the fact that the condition of odors increased the ability of calculation, and when only the highly concentrated oxygen was provided, parasympathetic nerve system was activated, however, when highly concentrated oxygen was provided with peppermint at the same time, sympathetic nervous system (sns) was activated, which had a negative effect on the autonomic nervous system was drawn.

전기이중층 커패시터의 성능에 미치는 산소/질소 함유 관능기들의 영향 (Influence of Oxygen-/Nitrogen-containing Functional Groups on the Performance of Electrical Double-Layer Capacitor)

  • 본 논문에서는 전기이중층 커패시터(EDLC, Electrical Double Layer Capacitor)의 전극소재로 쓰이는 활성탄소의 안정화를 위해 산소함유관능기를 최소화하고 질소함유관능기의 도입을 통해 유기용액계의 전해질을 가지는 EDLC의 축전용량을 개선하는 연구를 하였다. 주사전자현미경(SEM, Scanning Electron Microscopy), 후리에 변환 적외선분광기(FTIR, Fourier Transform Infrared), 자동원소분석기(EA, Elemental Analysis), 보엠(Boehm) 적정법, 충 방전 테스트 등의 분석법을 이용하여 그 결과를 확인하였다. 산 처리를 통하여 산소함유관능기가 도입되고 요소처리를 통하여 질소함유관능기가 도입되었음을 확인하였다. 질소함유관능기 도입을 통하여 EDLC의 g 당 방전용량을 2 mA 상승시켰으며 빠른 속도로 최대 충 방전 성능을 달성하였다. 반면 산소함유관능기는 전해질 속의 전하가 탄소표면에 흡 탈착되는 것을 방해하기 때문에 낮은 방전용량을 보였고, 충 방전 횟수가 늘어남에 따라 방전용량의 큰 감소를 보여주었다.

Uptake of Wastewater Organic Matter to Activated Sludge

  • The influences of contact time and ratio of food to microorganism (F/M) on uptake of wastewater organic matter in a short contact process were investigated using three activated sludge batch reactors fed with synthetic wastewater, sewage and livestock wastewater. About 64% of influent soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) in the synthetic wastewater and 61% of SCOD in the sewage and 43% of SCOD in the diluted livestock wastewater were adsorbed into the activated sludge within 30 min. The specific mass of organic matter uptaken in the synthetic wastewater was 55 mg SCOD/g mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS). In the same manner, 20 and 14 mg SCOD/g MLSS were calculated as the values in the sewage and livestock wastewater, respectively.

  • The aging society is globally one of biggest issue because it is related with various degenerative brain disease such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and cerebrovascular disease. These diseases are characterized by misfolded-protein aggregation; another pathological trait is "neuroinflammation". In physiological state, the resting microglia cells are activated and it removes abnormal synapses and cell membrane debris to maintain the homeostasis. In pathological state, however, microglia undergo morphological change form 'resting' to 'activated amoeboid phenotype' and the microglia cells are accumulated by neuronal damage, the inflammatory reactions induced nerve metamorphosis with a variety of neurotoxic factors including cytokines, chemokines, and reactive oxygen species. Thus, the activated microglia cell with various receptors (TSPO, COX, CR, P2XR, etc.) was perceived as important biomarkers for imaging the inflammatory progression. In this review, we would like to introduce the current status of the development of radiotracers that can image activated microglia.

Black soybean anthocyanins attenuate inflammatory responses by suppressing reactive oxygen species production and mitogen activated protein kinases signaling in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Oxidative stress is closely related with inflammation and development of many diseases. Black soybean seed coat contains high amount of anthocyanins, which are well-known for free radical scavenging activities. This study investigated inflammatory response and action mechanism of black soybean anthocyanins with regard to antioxidant activity in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. MATERIALS/METHODS: RAW 264.7 cells were treated with anthocyanins extracted from black soybean seed coats in a concentration range of 12.5 to $100{\mu}g/mL$. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines, and the signaling in the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) pathway were examined. RESULTS: Black soybean anthocyanins significantly decreased LPS-stimulated production of ROS, inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin $E_2$, and pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$ and interleukin-6, in a dose-dependent manner without cytotoxicity (P < 0.001). Black soybean anthocyanins downregulated the expression of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells (P < 0.001). Moreover, black soybean anthocyanins inhibited LPS-induced phosphorylation of MAPKs, including extracellular signal-regulated kinase, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and p38 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that black soybean anthocyanins exert anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting ROS generation and subsequent MAPKs signaling, thereby inhibiting inflammatory responses.
