The present study has evaluated the $CO_2$ adsorption amount of activated carbon pellets (AC). Coconut shell based test AC were modified with surface impregnation of glycine, glycine metal salts and monoethanolamine for low level $CO_2$ (3000 ppm) adsorption. Physical and chemical properties of prepared adsorbents were analyzed and the adsorbed amount of $CO_2$ was investigated by using pure and 3,000 ppm $CO_2$ levels. The impregnation of nitrogen functionalities was verified by XPS analysis. The adsorption capacity for pure $CO_2$ gas was found to reach upto 3.08 mmol/g by AC-LiG (Activated carbon-Lithium glycinate), which has the largest specific surface area ($1026.9m^2/g$). As for low level $CO_2$ flow the primary amine impregnated adsorbent showed 0.26 mmol/g of adsorption amount, indicating the highest selectivity. An adsorbent with potassium-glycine salts (AC-KG, Activated carbon-Potassium glycinate) instead of amine presented with 0.12 mmol/g of adsorption capacity, which was higher than that of raw activated carbon granules (0.016 mmol/g).

The adsorption of phenolic compound resorcinol on activated carbons prepared from Moringa oleifera (Drumstick bark) has been investigated. Activated carbon was prepared by impregnating Moringa oleifera with 50% phosphoric acid in the ratio of 1:1 and 1:2(w/w), designated as MOAC1 and MOAC2. Equilibrium and isotherm studies were carried out. The influences of variables such as contact time, initial concentration of resorcinol, carbon dosage in the solution on percentage adsorption and adsorption capacity of the bark have been analysed. The equilibration time was found to be 4 h. Kinetics of resorcinol onto activated carbons was checked for pseudo first order and pseudo second order model. It was found that the adsorption of resorcinol follows pseudo second order kinetics for both MOAC1 and MOAC2. The isotherm data were correlated with isotherm models, namely Langmuir and Freundlich. Adsorption isotherms were satisfactorily fitted by both the Langmuir and Freundlich model for MOAC1 and MOAC2.

The two-step surface modifications of activated carbon was carried out to improve the adsorption capacity of toxic heavy metal ions in liquid phase. Physical and chemical properties of the as-received activated carbon (AC) and two kinds of surface-modified activated carbons ($1^{st}AC$ and $2^{nd}AC$) were evaluated through the BET analysis, surface acidity, and oxides measurements. Specific surface area and pore volume did not significantly change, but surface oxide-group remarkably increased by the surface modification. Equilibrium and batch adsorptions of the various metals, such as Pb, Cd, and Cr, using AC, $1^{st}AC$, and $2^{nd}AC$ were performed at initial pH 5. The adsorption capacity and rate of $2^{nd}AC$ were higher than those of AC and $1^{st}AC$. The carboxylic/sodium carboxylate complex groups were developed from the two-step surface modification of activated carbon, which strongly affected the adsorption of metal ions.
Adsorption characteristics of boron on activated carbon was investigated in order to evaluate the use of activated carbon for the removal of boron in desalination processes using SWRO. Boron was removed ranging from 54~60% when the concentration of activated carbon was 1,000 mg/L in 6 hours under the initial boron concentration of 5 mg/L. The removal of boron increased by 20~22% with the increase of pH from 5 to 9. Organic matter had adverse effect on the adsorption of boron on activated carbon. Boron removal decreased by 10-12% when EDTA was added at 1 mg/L under 5 mg/L of boron and 200mg/L of activated carbon. In this results, activated carbon would be a good candidate for a pretreatment of desalination processes by SWRO from the view of mitigating the feed boron concentration to RO and meeting the effluent boron concentration without post-treatment after RO.
Adsorption process using granular activated carbon(GAC) has been considered as one of the most effective water treatment technologies to remove humic acid which is recon- niEed as trihalomethane(THM) precursor in chlorination. To design the most effective GAC process, it is necessary to conduct the test of adsor- ption performance by means of isothem, batch rate and column studies and to select the most effective activated carbon according to raw materials of GAC - lignite and coconut shell. The objective of this study is to investigate the adsorption performance of humid acid on two activated carbons - lignite activated carbon(LAC) and coconut shell activated car- bon(CAC) made in Korea. It is available to represent UV-abs and trihalomethane formation potential(THMFP) as concentration of humic acid due to good relationship. The adsorption capacity of humid acid is not concerned with surface area of activated carbon but with pore size related to about $100{\AA}$, and then LAC forming at the extent of mesopore is found to be eight times more effective in adsorption capacity than CAC forming at micropore. The adsorption capacity of LAC and CAC is better at pH 5.5 than at pH 7. Pore and surface diffusion coefficients calculated from the diffusion model are $7.61\times10^{-13}m^2/sec$, $3.52\times10^{-15}m^2/sec$ for CAC, and $3.38\times10^{-12}m^2$/sec and $Ds=1.48{\times}10^{-15}m^2/sec$ for GAC respectively. From the results of column test it shows that the performance of LAC is also better than CAC and the optimal EBCT(Empty Bed Contact Time) is 4.52min. and activated carbon removes selectively the components of humic acid to be easily formed to THM.
The purpose of this study was to gain basic information on the characteristics of $CO_2$ adsorption in relation to $Na_2CO_3$, $K_2CO_3$, $Li_2CO_3$-impregnated activated carbon in a Fixed Bed Reactor. From the results of this study the following conclusions were made: $Na_2CO_3$, $K_2CO_3$, $Li_2CO_3$-impregnated activated carbon had a longer breakthrough time and more enhanced adsorption capacity than activated carbon alone. When tested with isothermal adsorption and tested for $CO_2$ adsorption the amount of $CO_2$ adsorbed varied with temperature, $CO_2$ inlet concentration, gas flow rate, aspect ratio, etc. Based on the results, when Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Polanyi adsorption isotherms were used for linear regression of isothermal adsorption data, Langmuir adsorption isotherm was the most suitable. And, the optimum condition for $Na_2CO_3$ and $K_2CO_3$ impregnated activated carbon make-up was 1N and $Li_2CO_3$ was 0.1N. It could be concluded that adsorption capacity was decreased with adsorption temperature and increased gas concentration. When the aspect ratio (L/D) was varied 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0, the significant drop of adsorption amount was observed below 1.0 and breakthrough time was shortened with gas flow rate.
The influence of carbon surface area, carbon-oxygen groups associated with the carbon surface and the solution pH on the adsorption of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions has been studied using three activated carbons. The adsorption isotherms are Type I of BET classification and the data obeys Langmuir adsorption equation. The BET surface area has little effect on the adsorption while it is strongly influenced by the presence of acidic carbon oxygen surface groups. The amount of these surface groups was enhanced by oxidation of the carbons with different oxidizing agents and reduced by eliminating these groups on degassing at different temperatures. The adsorption of Pb(II) ions increases on each oxidation and decreases on degassing the oxidized carbons. The increase in adsorption on oxidation has been attributed to the formation of acidic carbon-oxygen surface groups and the decrease to the elimination of these acidic surface groups on degassing. The adsorption is also influenced by the pH of the aqueous solution. The adsorption is only small at pH values lower than 3 but is considerably larger at higher pH values. Suitable mechanisms consistent with the adsorption data have been suggested.

There is an adsorption method using activated carbon as a typical method for removing elemental mercury. Physical characteristics of activated carbon such as specific surface area and volume of pore (micro and meso) have positive effect for mercury adsorption. Activated carbon is carbon-based material with a high specific surface area. This activated carbon can be manufactured through carbonization and activation process. In this process, physical characteristics of specific surface area and pore distribution are changed by controlling operating parameters like temperature, time and reagent of activation. In this study, we evaluated characteristics of activated carbons manufactured from pinewood and coal with the operating parameters. We evaluated mercury adsorption capacities of the activated carbons having excellent physical characteristics and compared those to the commercial activated carbon.

Adsorption equilibrium data of pure solvent vapors (n-Hexane, Toluene, MEK) as well as their binary mixtures on activated carbon (sorbonorit $B_4$) were experimentally determined in the range of 293.2~323.2 K and beyond saturated vapor pressure corresponding to experimental temperature. Langmuir, Freundlich, LRC, W-VSM, FH-VSM were estimated for the predication of single component as well as binary mixtuer systems. The isosteric heat of adsorption at infinite dilution of pure n-hexane, toluene, MEK on activated carbon were 45.18, 25.85, 34.62 Kcal/mol, respectively, also, n-hexane-toluene binary adsorption of activated carbon formed an azeotrope at 293.2 K and total pressure 5.1~10.3 mmHg.
The Dongbok lake water before and after alum coagulation and activated carbon adsorption were analyzed in terms of organic contents, molecular weight distributuin (MWD), and UV-absorbance. Dissolved organic compounds in the Dongbok lake were fractionated into three molecular size classes by gel permeation chromatography. The fractionation was reasonably successful in isolating compounds with The bulk of the dissolved carbon was present in compounds of molecular weight in the range of 3,000~10,000. Alum coagulation preferentially treated molecules of high molecular weight, which has molecules larger than 10,000. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal after activated carbon adsorption was high in the Fraction B , IR . The $A_{260}$/DOC ratio after alum and activated carbon treatment the Fraction II, III. This results suggest that the organics remaining after each treatment has a trihalomethane formation potential
