The adsorption behavior of Eosin Y on activated carbon (AC) in batch system was investigated. The adsorption isotherm could be well fitted by the Langmuir adsorption equation. The kinetics of adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order model. The temperature variation was used to evaluate the values of free energy (${\Delta}G^{\circ}$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) and entropy (${\Delta}S^{\circ}$). The positive value of enthalpy change ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$ for the process confirms the endothermic nature of the process and more favourable at higher temperature, the positive entropy of adsorption ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$ reflects the affinity of the AC material toward Eosin Y and the negative free energy values ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous. With the increase of the amount of AC, removal efficiency of Eosin Y was increased, but adsorption capacity was decreased. And adsorption capacity was increased with the decrease of particle size. With the increase of the amount of AC, removal efficiency of Eosin Y was increased, but adsorption capacity was decreased. And adsorption capacity was increased with the decrease of particle size.
Activated carbon/$TiO_2$ (AC/$TiO_2$) composites modified with different concentrations of Fe were prepared. The $N_2$ adsorption data showed that the composites had decreased surface area compared with the pristine activated carbon. This indicated the blocking of the micropores on the surface of AC, which was further supported by observation via SEM. XRD results showed patterns for the composites and an anatase typed titanium dioxide structure with a small part of rutile in a higher Fe concentration (> 1.0 mol/L). EDX results showed the presence of C and, O, with Ti peaks on the composites of Fe-AC/$TiO_2$ with relatively lower Ti concentration, which may be due to the higher Fe concentration incorporated into the composites. Subsequently, the photocatalytic effects on methylene blue (MB) were investigated. The improved decomposition of MB showed the combined effects of adsorptions and photodegradation. Especially, the composites modified by Fe revealed enhanced photodegradation behaviors of MB.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released from various sources and are unsafe for human health. Porous materials are promising candidates for the adsorption of VOCs owing to their increased ratio of surface area to volume. In this study, activated carbon (AC) impregnated cellulose acetate (CA) electrospun mats were synthesized using electrospinning for the removal of VOCs from the air mixture of ACs, and CA solution was electrospun at different proportions (5%, 10%, and 15%) in a single nozzle system. The different AC amounts in the electrospun mats were distributed within the AC fibers. The adsorption capacities were measured for acetone, benzene, and dichloromethane, using quartz crystal microbalance. The results elicited an increasing adsorption capacity trend as a function of the impregnation of ACs in the electrospun mats, while their capacities increased as a function of the AC concentration. Dichloromethane resulted in a faster adsorption process than acetone and benzene owing to its smaller molecular size. VOCs were desorbed with the N2 gas purging, while VOCs were adsorbed at higher temperatures owing to the increased vapor pressures. The adsorption analysis using Dubinin-Astakhov equation showed that dichloromethane is more strongly adsorbed on mats.
The $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$/AC composite was prepared by sol-gel process with ultrasonication. The prepared composite was characterized by SEM, XRD and TG analysis, and their electrochemical behaviors were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and charge-discharge test in 1M $LiBF_4$/PC electrolyte. From the results, the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ particles coated on AC surface had an average particle size of 100 nm and showed spinel-framework structure. When the potential range of the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$/AC composite was extended from 0.1 to 2.5 V, redox peaks and electric double layer property were revealed. The initial discharge capacity of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$/AC composite was 218 mAh $g^{-1}$ at 1 C. The enhancement of discharge capacity was attributed to electric double layer of added activated carbon.
In this work, manganese dioxide ($Mn_3O_4$)/carbon black (CB) composites (Mn-CBs) were prepared by an in situ coating method as electrical fillers and the effect of the Mn-CBs on the electrical performance of activated carbon (AC)-based electrodes was investigated. Structural features of Mn-CBs produced via in situ coating using a $KMnO_4$ solution were confirmed by XRD and TEM images. The electrical performances, including cv curves, charge-discharge behaviors, and specific capacitance of the ACs/Mn-CBs, were determined by cyclic voltammograms. It was found that the composites of $Mn_3O_4$ and CBs were successfully formed by in situ coating method. ACs/Mn-CBs showed higher electrical performance than that of AC electrodes fabricated with conventional CBs due to the pesudocapacitance reaction of manganese oxides in the aqueous electrolyte. Consequently, it is anticipated that the incorporation of $Mn_3O_4$ into CBs could facilitate the utilization of CBs as electrical filler, leading to enhanced electrochemical performance of AC electrodes for supercapacitors.
2-methylisoborneol (MIB) is a musty odor compound produced as a secondary metabolite by some cyanobacteria and actinomycetes. It is lead to distrust in tap water due to taste and odor. It is well known that activated carbon (AC) adsorption is the best available technology to remove 2-MIB and geosmin. In this study, physical characteristics of virgin AC and reactivated AC was compared. The effect of variation of NOM molecular weight on adsorption of 2-MIB in virgin AC and reactivated AC were also evaluated. BET surface area was decreased by 13 to 23% and total pore volume was decreased by 18 to 21% due to first and second reactivation compare to the virgin carbon. However, mesopore volume ($V_{meso}$) was increased about 14% after reactivation. It showed that micropore volume was decreased and move to mesopore or macropore after reactivation. Decreased adsorption capacity of 2-MIB was greatly related to below 3000Da. Adsorption capacity of 2-MIB was rather greater in virgin AC than in reactivated, which is strongly related to micropore volume.

Capacitive deionization of saline water is one of the most promising water purification technologies due to its high energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This study synthesizes porous carbon composites composed of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and activated carbon (AC) with various rGO/AC ratios using a facile chemical method. Surface characterization of the rGO/AC composites shows a successful chemical reduction of GO to rGO and incorporation of AC into rGO. The optimized rGO/AC composite electrode exhibits a specific capacitance of ~243 F g-1 in a 1 M NaCl solution. The galvanostatic charging-discharging test shows excellent reversible cycles, with a slight shortening in the cycle time from the ~260th to the 530th cycle. Various monovalent sodium salts (NaF, NaCl, NaBr, and NaI) and chloride salts (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, and CsCl) are deionized with the rGO/AC electrode pairs at a cell voltage of 1.3 V. Among them, NaI shows the highest specific adsorption capacity of ~22.2 mg g-1. Detailed surface characterization and electrochemical analyses are conducted.
The Pt-Ru/Carbon as an anode catalyst supported on the commercial activated carbon (AC) having high surface area and micropore was characterized for application of Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC). The Pt-Ru/AC anode catalyst used in this experiment showed the performance of $600\;mA/cm^2$ current density at 0.3 V. The borohydride reduction process using $NaBH_4$, denoted as a process A, showed much higher current and power densities than process B prepared by changing the reduction and washing process of process A. The particle sizes are strongly affected by the reduction process than the specific surface area of raw active carbon and the sizes are almost constant when the specific surface area of carbon are over than the $1200\;m^2/g$. Smaller particle size of catalyst and more narrow intercrystalite distance increased the performance of DMFC.
This study aims to evaluate the effect of capping materials on blocking pollutant elution from contaminated sediment to water body. Experiments were carried out under conditions in which the elution rate was intensified artificially using compost with high concentration of organic compound and nutrient salts instead of sediments. Activated carbon (AC), modified activated carbon (MAC), P. putida immobilized activated carbon (PBAC) and effective microorganisms immobilized activated carbon (EBAC) were used as capping materials. Zeolite (ZT) and two kinds of commercially available microorganisms immobilized zeolite products (ZC, ZN) were used for comparison experiment. The elution rate of organic compound, nitrogen and phosphorus were compared with that of control experiment. The experiments were conducted for 56 days. Concentrations of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were measured to use the comparison of release rate of organic compound, nitrogen and phosphorus. From the experimental results, AC based materials showed better performance to block the elution of organic compound and nitrogen than ZT based materials. Although ZT based materials were more effective than AC and PBAC to block phosphorus, MAC and EBAC showed the best performance of phosphorus elution blocking among the all candidate materials. In conclusion, EBAC is considered as the most effective capping materials, because organic compound, nitrogen and phosphorus will be degraded continuously by EM in the long term.
Carbon is an attractive material on electro double capacitor which depend on charge storage in the electrode/electrolyte interfacial double layer. Carbonaceous material for double layer capacitor can be obtained from carbon powder, fiber, film and porous carbon sheet. The capacitance of electrodes using an activated carbon was influenced by a filling density of the carbon, thickness and internal resistance of the electrode. In this study. to reduce internal resistance and increase electric conductivity of the electrode. activated carbon/carbon(AC/C) composite electrode was fabricated. The capacitors which have energy densities of 68F/g(at $30^{\circ}C$), 109F/g(at $60^{\circ}C$) and $68F/cm^3$(at $30^{\circ}C$), $111F/cm^3$(at $60^{\circ}C$) were fabricated by using AC/C composite electrodes.
