  • PVC and SAN are often mixed to compensate for the disadvantages of each polymer. Miscibility and thermal stability of PVC/SAN blend were investigated in this study by blending SAN polymer having 20, 24, 28, 32 % of acrylonitrile contents. Two polymers were mixed using a melt blending method with a single screw extruder. DSC thermogram was used to evaluate miscibility of the two polymers. SAN having 24 % of acrylonitrile showed the best miscibility with PVC. In order to evaluate degradation behavior, blended polymer was heat treated in DSC furnace and glass transition temperature was measured consecutively. Glass transition temperature increased continuously with annealing time due to degradation and cross-linking of polymer chains. Melt index of blended polymer was always higher than that of PVC.

  • The radical copolymerization with propagation and depropagation is presented in order to estimate reactivity rate of monomers and $K_{11}$(the equilibrium constant for propagation and depropagation) in the copolymerization of ${\alpha}-methylstyrene-co-methylmethacrylate$ and ${\alpha}-methylstyrene-acrylonitrile$. The value of ${\alpha}-methylstyrene$ and methylmethacrylate and $K_{11}$ are found to be 0.48, 0.47 and 5.0 respectively. The value of ${\alpha}-methylstyrene$ and acrylonitrile and the $K_{11}$ are found to be 0.1251, 0.0577 and 23.8 respectively. The treatment rate constant of ${\alpha}-methylstyrene-co-methylmethacrylate$ and ${\alpha}-methylstyrene-co-acrylonitrile$ in the copolymerization is estimated to be 2.5, 80.72 regardless of monomer feed composition.

  • Epoxy resins are thermoset polymers that exhibit good adhesion, creep resistance, heat resistance, and chemical resistance. These polymers, however, give poor resistance to crack propagation and low impact strength. In this study, epoxy/carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) and epoxy/amine-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (ATBN) composites were prepared with different ratio of CTBN and ATBN to improve low impact strength of epoxy resin. The impact strength of epoxy/elastomeric composites shows high values with increasting nonpolar surface free energy while the tensile strength and the glass transition are decreased. The highest surface free energy, impact strength observed when 15 phr CTBN and 15 phr ATBN added, respectively. It can be concluded that as liquid rubber to improve impact strength of epoxy resin, ATBN is more preferable to CTBN.

  • Recently, the electric vehicle market is gradually growing due to strengthened environmental regulations and high oil prices. also, in internal combustion engine vehicles, the sensitivity of Buzz, Squeak, Rattle (BSR) noise is increasing as engine Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH)-related noise is reduced and technology for shielding noise coming from outside is developed. In this study, the stick-slip noise that occurs in Panoramic Curved Display (PCD) of automobile was analyzed for the correlation between the surface energy of polymer plastic and the polar component. For polar polymer materials, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and PolyCarbonate-Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (PC-ABS), compound materials were fabricated and evaluated. As a result, when the polar component of the polymer plastic was 3.86 mN/m or higher, stick-slip motion occurred, and as the absolute transition slope increased in the friction behavior over time, the possibility of stick-slip noise increased and the value of the friction coefficient The greater the difference, the greater the strength of the stick-slip noise.

  • In this work, high pressure binary phase equilibria data of carbon dioxide with acetonitrile and acrylonitrile were obtained experimentally. A new static type experimental apparatus was built to measure temperature, pressure and phase equilibria composition. The accuracy of the experimental apparatus was tested by comparing the measured phase equilibria data of the carbon dioxide-acetonitrile system at $75^{\circ}C$ with those of McHugh and coworkers. The binary phase behavior data of carbon dioxide-acetonitirle system were measured from 2.4 to 14.5 MPa at $55^{\circ}C$, $75^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$. Also, the phase equilibria of the system carbon dioxide-acrylonitrile were measured from 1.6 MPa up to 13.9 MPa at $45^{\circ}C$, $65^{\circ}C$, $85^{\circ}C$ and $105^{\circ}C$. The solubility of acetonitrile and acrylonitrile increases as the temperatures increases at constant pressure. Also, these two carbon dioxide-polar solute system have continuous critical-mixture curves that exhibit maximums in pressure at temperatures between the critical temperatures of carbon dioxide and acetonitrile or acrylonitrile. The experimental data obtained in this study were modeled using the Peng-Robinson equation of state. Good agreement between calculated and experimental results was observed.

  • While poly(styrene)-based anion exchange membranes have the advantage like easy and simple manufacturing process, they also possess the disadvantage of poor durability due to their brittleness. Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber was used here as an additive to make the membranes have improved flexibility and durability. For the preparation of the anion exchange membranes, a PP mesh substrate was immersed into monomer solutions with vinylbenzyl chloride, styrene, divinylbenzene and benzoyl peroxide, then thermally polymerized & crosslinked. The prepared membranes were subsequently post-aminated using trimethylamine to result in $-N+(CH_3)_3$ group-containing composite membranes. Various contents of vinylbenzyl chloride and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber were investigated to optimize the membrane properties and the prepared membranes were evaluated in terms of water content, ion exchange capacity and electric resistance. It was found that the optimized composite membranes showed higher IEC and lower electric resistance than a commercial anion exchange membrane(AMX) and have excellent flexibility and durability.

  • Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) [P(NIPAAm-co-AN)] copolymers with AN content of up to 10 mol% and their hydrogels were synthesized using water as a reaction medium, and the effects of AN unit incorporation on the critical gel transition temperature(CGTT) and swelling behaviors of the hydrogels were investigated. The CGTT of the copolymer hydrogel was $30{\sim}32\;^{\circ}C$, decreasing with increasing AN content. Below CGTT, swelling rate and equilibrium swelling ratio of the copolymer hydrogel decreased with increasing AN content. On the other hand, it exhibited faster deswelling and lower equilibrium deswelling ratio with increasing AN content above CGTT.

  • The morphological changes during melt compounding of ternary blends containing various combinations of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS), methyl methacrylate-butadiene-ethyl acrylate(MBE), styrene-acrylonitrile(SAM) copolymers, and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) as dispersed components in a fixed matrix of polycarbonate(PC) have been investigated. Depending on the composition of the blend, MBE particles and PMMA phase appear to locate at the PC-SAN interface under the influence of interfacial tensions and motion induced coalescence. The interfacial viscosity is found to be a critical factor that affects the amount of coalescence.
