  • In this work, flame retardant acrylic emulsion pressure sensitive adhesives were newly polymerized combining phosphorous flame retardant monomer and acrylic monomer like butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The process of polymerization showed 100% of conversion at solid content of 65%, and viscosity of acrylic emulsion was increased up to 5500 cps when phosphorous flame retardant monomer was added into acrylic emulsion. The structure of flame retardant acrylic emulsion was identified using FT-IR and thermal properties like glass transition temperature (Tg) were checked by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Acrylic emulsion without phosphorous flame retardant monomer had Tg of -44.1℃ and peel strength of 2,100gf/inch, however, flame retardant acrylic emulsion showed maximum Tg (-31.4℃) and peel strength of 200gf/inch when 15 part of phosphorous flame retardant monomer was added. Flammability test was also conducted to confirm the application of flame retardant acrylic emulsion as the flame retardant addtive.

  • A novel microorganism, designated as LG12, was isolated from soil based on its ability to use acrylic acid as the sole carbon source. An electron microscopic analysis of its morphological characteristics and phylogenetic classification by 16S rRNA homology showed that the LG12 strain belongs to Rhodococcus erythropolis. R. erythropolis LG12 was able to metabolize a high concentration of acrylic acid (up to 40 g/l). In addition, R. erythropolis LG12 exhibited the highest acrylic acid-degrading activity among the tested microorganisms, including R. rhodochrous, R. equi, R. rubber, Candida rugosa, and Bacillus cereus. The effect of the culture conditions of R. erythropo/is LG12 on the production of 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3HP) from acrylic acid was also examined. To enhance the production of 3HP, acrylic acid-assimilating activity was induced by adding 1 mM acrylic acid to the culture medium when the cell density reached an $OD_{600}$ of 5. Further cultivation of R. erythropo/is LG 12 with 40 g/l of acrylic acid resulted in the production of 17.5 g/l of 3HP with a molar conversion yield of 44% and productivity of 0.22 g/l/h at $30^{\circ}C$ after 72 h.

  • In this study, we experimented that how to synthesis waterborne urethane-acrylic hybrid resin for leather coatings. First of all, We had analyzed data by FT-IR, SEM and TGA for the machanical properties. By TGA analysis polymers showed heat distortion temperature. and by FT-IR measurement we confirmed that synthesis of urethane and acrylic. In the experiment, solvent resistance, polyurethane and acrylic grades 4-5 showed both a high. Tensile strength measured in the waterborne polyurethane > Acrylic emulsion showed strength in the order. Films were obtained by coating the water born resin on leveled surfaces and allowing them to dry at room temperature for 72hrs. After demolding, the films were kept in a desiccator to avoid moisture contant at $25^{\circ}C$ for 45hrs before the measurements. In this result, the mechanical propersies of waterborne polyurethane-acrylic hybrid resin showed that how effect to resin in leather coating between polyurethane content and acrylic content. Therefore, acrylic emulsion had most high solvent resistance glade and waterborne polyurethane had good result in abrasion test and tensile strength.

  • This study was carried in order to manufacture the high quality coated paper. High quality includes not only physical and optical properties of coated paper but also final print quality. In this study, new acrylic-styrene emulsion was polymerized in laboratory and compared with conventional styrene-butadiene latex. Low-shear viscosity of coating color was decreased with increasing acrylic-emulsion dosage. Small amount of acrylic emulsion addition increased water retention, but further addition decreased it. Acrylic-emulsion addition improved paper gloss, brightness and whiteness, but decreased PPS and opacity slightly. Ink gloss was increased with using No. 3 acrylic-emulsion due to lower ink setting properties. However No. 1 and 2 emulsion showed the opposite result. Surface strength of coated paper was increased with using No. 3 acrylic-emulsion. These results indicate that high quality coated paper can be manufactured with using No. 3 acrylic-emulsion.

  • The purpose of this present study was to develop a new way of self-curing acrylic resin, using commercially available polyphosphate, Calgon, which is known to be antimicrobial and safe. For the study, polyphosphate(polyP) was blended with acrylic powder and devided into four groups as follows: no polyP(control), 1% polyP, 2% polyP, and 3% polyP. For the experiment, Streptococcus mutans GS5, Streptococcus sobrinus 6715, Streptococcus gordonii G9B and Challis, Porphyromonas gingivalis 2561, and Candida albicans ATCC 90027 were used. Resin specimens in each group were tested in vitro for the purpose of investigating the effect of polyP on the microbial attachment, growth and hydrophobicity of the resin surface. The results were as follows. 1. PolyP added to the acrylic resin decreased attachment of S. mutans GS5, S. sobrinus 6715, S. gordonii G9B. The greater binding inhibition was found in acrylic resin polymerized with polyP at higher concentrations. 2. The addition of polyP to acrylic resin failed to significantly affect the growth of the tested microorganisms. 3. The addition of polyP to acrylic resin seemed to reduce hydrophobicity of the acrylic resin. PolyP in acrylic resin does not seem to exert a direct antibacterial activity, but rather inhibit attachment of oral bacteria, especially mutans streptococci to saliva-coated acrylic resin. The acrylic resin reduces attachment of streptococci may be due to the decreased hydrophobicity caused by polyP added to the resin. PolyP may be included to acrylic resin to inhibit dental caries which often occurs when removable acrylic resin appliance is placed.

  • Radiation grafting of acrylic acid and 4-vinylpyridine at room temperature has been studied by an impregnation method to improve the hygroscopic properties, the antistatic behavior and the dyeability of polyester fabric. Polyester fabric was impregnated with acrylic acid or aqueous emulsion of acrylic acid-4-vinylpyridine by immersion at 25$^{\circ}$or 7$0^{\circ}C$. The impregnated fabric was irradiated under nitrogen gas with ${\gamma}$-rays from Co-60. When acrylic acid grafted polyester fabric was treated with sodium carbonate, calcium acetate and potassium persulfate, tne rate of water absorption was increased and most parts of polyacrylic acid formed were extracted off from the fabric with 0.1% solution of sodium hydroxide at 10$0^{\circ}C$. In the case of the impregnation of a mixture of acrylic acid and 4-vinylpyridine the petcent of grafting has been shown to be proportional to the ratio of 4-VP/AA and radiation dost. Estimating by contact angle measurements of water on the various polymer surfaces, the antistatic behavior was decreased with the increase of grafting percent. The investigation of electron micrograph disclosed the existence of certain type of discontinuities in the acrylic acid grafted polyester fiber which was treated with various salts.

  • Antistatic acrylic resin is made from n-butyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate(DMAEMA), 2-ethyl hexyl methacrylate, hydroxy ethyl methacrylate, 2,2'-azobis iso-butyronitrile by synthesis. To achieve a lowest surface resistance of antistatic acrylic resin was applied to a variety of synthesis processes. The acrylic resin has been determined from the value of surface resistance and -then the antistatic acrylic resin including dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate of the 10%, 20% and 30% is synthesized. Finally, dimethyl sulfate(DMS) on a variety of weight ratios is added to antistatic acrylic resin. When DMAEMA / DMS weight ratio is 1/1, antistatic acrylic resin isn't haze the lower the surface resistance. Compared to the traditional antistatic agent, all aspects of the physical properties is outstanding.

  • To prepare the waterborne silicone acrylic resin coatings, acrylic resin was prepared by a radical polymerization. Glass transition temperature(Tg) of the acrylic copolymer was fixed at 30℃ and the contents of tertiary amine monomer(DMAEMA), were varied to be 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt%, hydroxyl monomer, and carboxyl monomer were fixed 10 wt%, and 4 wt% respectively. γ-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPTMS) containing epoxy group was used for curing agents. The eqivalent ratio of amine to epoxy was 1:1. The prepared coatings exhibited excellent adhesion to various substrates, and various physical properties of the coatings were satisfactory. The gloss retension and color difference were improved at low tertiary amine concentration. The coatings containing 10wt% tertiary amine concentration have especially good weather resistant properties.
