Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) prepared by emulsion polymerization has broad applications for additives such as paint binder, adhesive for wood and paper due to its low glass transition temperature which help to plasticize substrate resins. Since emulsion polymerization has a disadvantage that surfactant and ionic initiator degrade properties of the product polymer, poly(vinyl acetate-co-butyl acrylate) (VVc-BA) was synthesized using potassium persulfate as catalyst and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as protective colloid to prevent the degradation. The copolymer latex product was internally plasticized and has enhanced colloid stability, adhesion, tensile strength and elongation. During VAc-BA emulsion polymerization, no coagulation and complete conversion occur with the reactant mixture of 0.7wt% potassium persulfate, 15wt% poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA-217), and the balanced monomer that the weight ratio of vinyl acetate to butyl acrylate is 19. As the concentrations of PVA increase, the copolymerization becomes faster and polymer particles are more stable, resulting in enhanced mechanical stability of the VAc-BA copolymer. However, the size of the polymer particles decreases with increasing PVA contents. Properties of the VAc-BA copolymer, such as minimum film formation temperature, glass transition temperature, surface morphology, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, tensile strength and elongation, were characterized using differential scanning calorimeter, transmission electron microscope and other instruments.

The effect of synthesis conditions such as carbon nanotube (CNT), 2,2,2-trifluoroethylmethacrylate (3FMA), and composition of organic-inorganic material in ozone resistance and surface characteristics of ultraviolet cured organic-inorganic hybrid coating film has been investigated. Coating solution was prepared using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), silane coupling agent methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), 3FMA, various organic materials with acrylate group, and CNT, then bar-coated on substrates using applicator, and densified by UV-curing. It was found that ozone resistance and adhesion of the coating film were strongly dependent upon contents of TEOS, 3FMA, and CNT. Especially, ozone resistance, adhesion, and surface hardness of coating film with CNT were improved, relatively. Ozone resistance of coating film with a high TEOS content was increased, but adhesion was decreased. In addition, it was also found that ozone resistance of coating film was increased with contents of 3FMA. On the other hand, surface hardness was decreased with increase of 3FMA.
The material constitution of multi-layered thin film coated on the PET base film was analyzed using ATR FT-IR and pyro GC/MS combination. The cross section of the film was acquired by cracking the film after dipping in liquid nitrogen and was observed using optical microscope. Total thickness of the coated film was $70{\mu}m$ and three layers were observed. Since each layers were too thin to analyze directly except the surface layer, analyzable area of each layers were exposed by using a proper solvent and were investigated using ATR FT-IR and pyro GC/MS. Results shows that three layers were commonly consisted of urethane-acrylate copolymers. Also, inorganic and/or metal inclusions detected by XPS and SEM-EDAX were exhibited by nano size $SiO_2$ particles in layer(1) and aluminum flakes in layer(2).
We present simple methods for fabricating high aspect-ratio polymer nanostructures on a solid substrate by rigiflex lithography with tailored capillarity and adhesive force. In the first method, a thin, thermoplastic polymer film was prepared by spin coating on a substrate and the temperature was raised above the polymer's glass transition temperature ($T_g$) while in conformal contact with a poly(urethane acrylate) (PUA) mold having nano-cavities. Consequently, capillarity forces the polymer film to rise into the void space of the mold, resulting in nanostructures with an aspect ratio of ${\sim}4$. In the second method, very high aspect-ratio (>20) nanohairs were fabricated by elongating the pre-formed nanostructures upon removal of the mold with the aid of tailored capillarity and adhesive force at the mold/polymer interface. Finally, these two methods were further used to fabricate micro/nano hierarchical structures by sequential application of the molding process for mimicking nature's functional surfaces such as a lotus leaf and gecko foot hairs.
UV curable hard and color coatings were formed on polycarbonate(PC) films. The coating materials were composed of a commercially available end-capped polyester(EB830), diacrylate monomer(HDDA), silicon acrylate, photoinitiator, and organic dye as a coloring agent. The surface properties of coating films were evaluated, and the influences of the compositions of coating materials were investigated. The coating films showed high transmission and good adhesion between coating layer and PC substrate. And the coating films exhibited higher hardness than bare PC film. The coating films with various colors were obtained by wet process, and the clear and color window lenses for mobile phone were prepared successfully.

In this paper, experimental methods about the flow behavior of thin polymer film by various edge patterns in the spin coating process for stable cover layer coating of a blu-ray disc is described. The blu-ray disc, a next-generation optical disc format over 25GB, consists of a 1.1m thick substrate and a 0.1mm tick cover layer. Generally, cover layer on the blu-ray disc is made by the polymer spin coating process. However, it is hard to secure sufficient coating uniformity around the rim on the cover layer. In order to get the uniform thickness deviation and to minimize the bead around the rim, the edge of the disc substrate can be modified into various patterns, such as normal plain, trench, step and chamfer pattern, etc, around the rim on the disc and experimented with various parameters, such as surface tension, viscosity, coating time, temperature and rotation speed, etc. And the optimal shape of the rim was tried to get by 3 dimensional computer simulation of the polymer expulsion process.

A photo-reactive methacrylate monomer having triazine as a core component was examined for photochromic diffractive image formation. Photochromic photopolymer films as a recording media contained a monomer mixture of triazine difunctional metharylate (DT) and ethylene glycol phenyl ether acrylate, binder polymer, photo initiator, and a photochromic spiro-oxazine dye. The content of photochromic dye was changed to examine the effect of photochromophore on diffraction efficiency and real holographic image formation. Holographic recording was performed on the photopolymer film by the combination of reference and probe beam. The diffraction efficiency of the photopolymer film in real-time measurement reached a maximum of $\sim90%$ within 30s. It was highly dependent on the photochromophore contents. After holographic recording, the color of the recorded area was changed under UV light (365 nm) and reversibly bleached to original color upon exposure to a visible light source. Films containing only photochromophore without monomer mixture were not reactive under the recording beam (491nm). Diffractive image formation and mechanism of the holographic recording in the presence of photochromophore will be presented.
Baroplastic poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA)/polystyrene (PS) blends were prepared by mixing PBA and PS emulsions synthesized by cationic and anionic surfactant, respectively. Interestingly, the heterocoagulation of nanoparticles have found to be affected strongly by emulsion concentration but the blends have been prepared with almost same compositions regardless of the amount of reactants. Utilizing this method, PBA/PS/Si hybrid nano-blends were prepared successfully via electrostatic attraction forces between PBA, PS and silica nanoparticles. The hybrid nano-blend having 2 or 5 wt% of silica was then processed to a semi-transparent film at $25^{\circ}C$ under 13.8 MPa for 10 min, which showed 3.0 MPa of tensile strength and 25 MPa of elastic modulus. Therefore, the heterocoagulation technique can be used for preparing baroplastics with uniform compositions of polymer and silica nanoparticles.
The hybrid thin-film (HTF) passivation layer composed of the UV curable acrylate layer and MS-31 (MgO:SiO2=3:1wt%) layer was adopted in organic light emitting diode (OLED) to protect organic light emitting materials from penetrations of oxygen and water vapors. The moisture resistance of the deposited HTF layer was measured by the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). The results showed that the HTF layer possessed a very low WVTR value of lower than $0.007g/m^2$ per day at $37.8^{\circ}C$ and 100% RH. Therefore, the HTF on the OLED was found to be very effective in protect what from the penetrations of oxygen and moisture.

This study investigated the photochromic properties and characterization of acetyl-substituted diarylethene (DAMBTF6)-doped fluoroacrylates media for holographic storage. For the rewritable holographic recording media, we prepared photochromic polymer films using an acrylate matrix by simple photocuring methods. Switching light sources from a visible (532 nm) to an ultraviolet (365 nm) produced transparent films that changed from pale yellow to red. Holographic recording was performed on the photochromic films by two interfering collimated plane wave beams. Excitation with a visible or ultraviolet light completely erased the records, and the film was rewritable either by 532 nm laser or by 325 nm laser within 2 seconds. Images were recorded onto a pixelated spatial light modulator with rectangular pixel apertures and reconstructed on the photochromic films to show recovery of the original images with high resolution.
